Alice is the daughter of Duke Godding and a prodigious witch. At sixteen, she was recommended as president of the Sage Council, a secret organization of magicians that grew from an informal circle into an influential institution. By twenty-four, she had relinquished the presidency but retained considerable influence as its special advisor. 252

Her immense spiritual power comes at a severe physical cost. Alice’s true body is chronically weak: she cannot walk freely and struggles even to hold a feather. To conceal this vulnerability, she projects a spiritual-body clone that can act and interact like her physical self; most people who meet “Alice” do not realize they are meeting her spiritual projection instead. 257
