The Great Hall was filled with laughter and cheer. Dumbledore flicked his long silver beard over his shoulders so it would not block the plate in front of him.
A tableful of delicious food appeared out of thin air, even more lavish than last year's.
"Great!" Ron grabbed a huge chicken leg. "Looks like they didn't cut back on the feast after all. It's almost as good as the one when Beauxbatons and Durmstrang came last year!"
Within seconds, his mouth was stuffed so full that it looked ready to burst.
Harry, meanwhile, had little interest in the feast before him. His mind was filled with the Sorting Hat's new song.
"Know the dangers, heed the signs; history's lessons serve as warnings. Our Hogwarts faces danger, and enemies beyond its walls are watching hungrily..."
Danger. Enemies. Voldemort's ugly, terrifying face suddenly filled Harry's mind.
He shook his heavy head hard, speared a golden-brown fried pork chop, and stuffed it into his mouth.
Once the students had eaten and drunk their fill, the Great Hall gradually grew noisy.
Dumbledore rose to his feet again, and the talking stopped at once.
"All right, now that we are digesting another exceptionally lavish feast, I ask you all to be quiet for a moment and listen as I go over the usual start-of-term notices."
His tone was the same as in previous years. "First-years should know that the Forbidden Forest on the grounds is out of bounds to students."
He instinctively glanced toward the Gryffindor table, his gaze falling somewhat wistfully on an empty chair.
Vincent was gone, but his seat remained.
Dumbledore shifted his gaze to Fred and George, who were whispering to each other. "And some of our older students ought to know that by now as well."
The twins seemed to
