Background / History

The Sharingan is an Uchiha bloodline eye power descended from the Rinne Sharingan. According to Qianyu, the Sharingan originated as a branch of the Rinne Sharingan awakened by Kaguya Ōtsutsuki after she consumed the Chakra Fruit; the Rinnegan emerged later, while the Byakugan predates both. 230

Within the Uchiha clan, the Sharingan is driven by extreme emotion. Not every Uchiha awakens it, and some clan members cannot awaken even the base Sharingan or cultivate ninjutsu at all. 21 249

Its power is not restricted to natural Uchiha wielders. Shimura Danzō possesses multiple transplanted Sharingan, while Kakashi Hatake uses Obito Uchiha’s transplanted Mangekyo Sharingan. Such use, however, places considerable strain on non-Uchiha users. 82 99 208

Appearance

The basic Sharingan is depicted as a blood-red eye with three black tomoe. Mangekyo patterns vary between users and become more elaborate as the eye evolves. 42 60 86
