Background / History

Sarutobi clan incident

During the growing conflict between Konohagakure and the Uchiha clan, Hiruzen rejected Danzo's demand to immediately order Fugaku Uchiha to surrender Qianyu. He instead sought to use Qianyu's actions as political leverage while warning Danzo against openly describing the Uchiha as a “tumor” to be excised. 4

Hiruzen arrived with ANBU personnel after Sarutobi Jiro murdered a civilian and was executed by Qianyu. Before the public, he condemned his younger brother Sarutobi Hiogo for protecting Jiro, stripped Hiogo of the Sarutobi clan headship, praised Qianyu for enforcing justice, and accepted responsibility as Jiro's uncle. 12

Privately, Hiruzen revealed that his anger at Hiogo centered on the public nature of the cover-up and the damage it caused to the Hokage's authority and reputation. 13 After Hiogo later attacked the Uchiha compound, killed three ANBU, and died fighting Qianyu, Hiruzen temporarily removed Qianyu from the Police Force and considered targeting the captain's followers. 20 21

Conflict with the Uchiha

Hiruzen accepted unfavorable concessions in negotiations with Kumogakure in order to secure a ceasefire and focus on what he regarded as Konoha's primary internal threat: the Uchiha clan. 46 48 During Kumogakure's demand for recompense after its envoy was killed while abducting Hinata Hyuga, he asked Hiashi Hyuga to sacrifice himself to prevent war; Hizashi Hyuga ultimately took his brother's place. 50 51

As Qianyu's influence rose, Hiruzen authorized Danzo's plan to kill him within a month, requiring secrecy and arranging for Orochimaru to take the blame if the scheme was exposed. He also intended to use the Kumogakure war to weaken the Uchiha clan. 65 66

When evidence of Danzo's human experimentation and corpse theft became public, Hiruzen declared Danzo an S-rank rogue ninja and ordered a worldwide hunt. 75 After Danzo's death, Hiruzen publicly severed ties with Danzo and Root, but continued preparing for a final confrontation with the Uchiha. 84 86

Civil war and downfall

Hiruzen encouraged Itachi Uchiha to prioritize the village over his clan, steering the child toward the destruction of the Uchiha clan as a means of preventing civil war. 88 89 When open conflict began, he fielded the ANBU and Sarutobi clan against the Uchiha and relied on Jiraiya, Itachi, and a secretly reanimated Tobirama Senju as successive safeguards. 109 114

Hiruzen made a secret deal with Orochimaru to obtain Tobirama's Impure World Reincarnation, paying with Konoha's Scroll of Seals. Tobirama repeatedly saved him from Qianyu during the battle, but was ultimately defeated. 114 116 117

Left as Qianyu's final opponent, Hiruzen prepared to use the Reaper Death Seal in desperation. Qianyu instead trapped him in an illusion, captured him, and tortured his soul with Kagutsuchi. 118 119 Following interrogation by Qianyu, Inoichi Yamanaka, and Ibiki Morino, Hiruzen's alleged crimes—including the extermination of the Senju clan, manipulation of the Uchiha, and mistreatment of the Uzumaki—were publicly exposed. 121 122

Qianyu sentenced Hiruzen to death and personally beheaded him atop the ruined Hokage building, ending his tenure as the Third Hokage. 123

Hiruzen was an elderly man with a weathered, wrinkled face and a customary kind smile. He usually carried a pipe and wore the Hokage hat and robes, but removed them in battle to reveal lean combat attire. 4 113
