Background and History

Mu En Scarlett found Bouncing cornered by several large black dogs shortly after arriving in Britain. Mu En drove the dogs away with a slingshot, and the black-furred creature became attached to him as his first friend in the new world. Mu En named it “Bouncing” after its habit of springing around whenever it obtained something shiny. 1

Bouncing accompanied Luan to Hogwarts despite Hagrid warning that first-years were not allowed to keep Nifflers as pets. Professor McGonagall later tested its self-control with a shiny trophy; Bouncing resisted the temptation and earned permission to remain in the castle until Luan graduated. 9 14

At Hogwarts, Bouncing became known for repeatedly locating Neville Longbottom’s toad, Trevor. Its six consecutive victories in a pet hide-and-seek competition earned it the title of “Six-time Champion,” though it gave its final Sickle prize to Luan rather than keeping it. 8 20

After Luan gained the ability to bring objects between worlds, Bouncing became the first high-level magical creature he brought aboard the Crimson Moon. Though initially disoriented by the trip, it recovered quickly, explored the ship, and was offered a room as its personal warehouse. 184

On Star Ember Island, a three-thousand-year-old prophecy carving depicted a young person arriving aboard the Crimson Moon with a strange creature resembling Bouncing. 190

Appearance

Bouncing is a small, black-furred Niffler with a long nose and a pouch near its belly. Its size and harmless appearance often cause other magical creatures to lower their guard around it. 1 302

Personality

Bouncing is intensely attracted to coins, gems, gold, and other shiny valuables. It expects payment for difficult tasks, instinctively protects its savings, and was disappointed when Luan’s room aboard the Crimson Moon contained only a protected money chest. 8 184

Despite its greed, Bouncing is deeply loyal and generous toward those it recognizes as friends. It gave Luan its final competition prize, lent money to Jay when Luan asked, and attempted to comfort orphaned children with candy. 20 351 375

It is highly social, curious, and eager to make friends with both magical and ordinary animals. Bouncing seeks out creatures it finds interesting—including Fawkes, the Giant Squid, and the Little Fire Dragon—and often tries to involve itself in Luan’s problems. 72 145 253
