Background / History
Hermione arrived at Hogwarts as an unusually prepared first-year, having already read all of her textbooks. On the Hogwarts Express, she introduced herself to Luan while examining Ron’s wand and helping search for Neville’s missing toad. Luan immediately noticed that her Wizard Bar was half-filled, unlike the blank bars of most other new students 8.
She comes from a Muggle family in London; her father is a dentist. Before Hogwarts, her uncontrolled magic caused chocolates at home to move to the top of a cabinet 60 286.
From the beginning of the school year, Hermione distinguished herself through rapid reading, strict attention to coursework, and a willingness to study material beyond her year. She read most of Hogwarts: A School History in a day, stayed awake through Professor Binns’s soporific History of Magic lessons, and regularly consulted the library for advanced theory 13 15.
Appearance
Hermione has a delicate, fair face, thick curly brown hair, and bright, piercing eyes 8.
- Thick, curly brown hair
- Fair complexion
- Bright, sharp eyes
- Often carries books, parchment, and a quill for research or note-taking
Personality
Hermione is intensely studious, ambitious, and unwilling to accept failure. She reads far beyond assigned coursework, researches spells across multiple sources, and treats even illness as an obstacle to falling behind in her studies 106 137 178. Her desire to excel can make her competitive, particularly when Luan’s memory, practical spellwork, or rapid progress surpasses her expectations 17 52 115.
She is direct and rule-conscious, frequently correcting classmates’ mistakes or questioning suspicious behavior. This honesty can come across as harsh, causing friction with Ron and others, but her criticism is usually motivated by a genuine wish for people to improve or stay safe 15 64 245.
Hermione is also observant and courageous. She pieces together clues surrounding Hogwarts’s protected secret, challenges Umbridge’s dismissal of her abilities, and insists on accompanying Luan when she believes he may be in danger 142 261 299.
Abilities & Skills
Academic Research
Hermione rapidly absorbs written material and connects information from different books, subjects, and year levels.
- Read all first-year textbooks before school began 8.

Magical Item Development
Hermione contributed the research, records, naming, and aesthetic design behind the group’s hand-warmer project.
- Designed a preliminary hand warmer using a blue magical flame on the same day the idea was discussed 83.

- Deduced that Hogwarts’s staff were guarding a secret by connecting reinforced protections, the three-headed dog, Dumbledore’s warnings, and Snape’s injury 142.
- Recognized that Harry’s broom malfunction could only have been caused by dark magic and confronted Snape during the Quidditch match 150.
- Saw through Luan’s claim that his unexplained transport was Apparition, then promised to keep his awakened ability secret 286.
