Background / History
Snape became one of Hogwarts' youngest professors and set a record for becoming Head of House at a young age; Professor Flitwick believes Luan Scarlett may eventually surpass it 63.
Before the novel's main events, Snape served Voldemort's organization and bore the Dark Mark on his left arm. He later became a double agent whose identity could no longer be used after Voldemort's return 309 313. His past is tied to Lily Evans, whom he loved; his failure to save her remains central to his guilt and his protection of Harry Potter 310 314.
At Hogwarts, Snape repeatedly warns Dumbledore that Quirrell is suspicious and that the Philosopher's Stone's defenses require attention. He is injured by Fluffy while investigating the protections, but treats the wound himself rather than relying on the hospital wing 67 93.
During Voldemort's attempt to seize the Philosopher's Stone, Snape navigates the defenses alongside Luan, Harry, and Voldemort's shadow. He ultimately turns on Voldemort, attempts to protect Harry, and offers himself as a host body to buy the students time to escape 309 310 311. Afterward, he and Dumbledore agree to protect both Harry and Luan; Snape proposes teaching Luan Occlumency 314.
Appearance
Snape is usually seen in dark robes and carries a slender wand. His presence is frequently described as severe or gloomy, particularly when he waits in shadowed corridors or patrols the castle 215 230.
- Limped after Fluffy bit his right leg during his investigation of the Stone's defenses 67 93.
- His gait gradually improves after the injury, though it remains uneven for a time 116.
- Uses a black, laboratory-like office for potion work and private discussions with students 179 297.
Personality
Snape is stern, sarcastic, and uncompromising in class, especially toward Gryffindor students. He frequently humiliates Harry, Ron, Neville, and other Gryffindors for poor preparation, while showing obvious favoritism toward Malfoy and Slytherin 21 71 90.
His hostility does not prevent him from recognizing competence. Snape revises his low opinion of Luan after learning that Luan subdued a troll, and later forms a pragmatic but increasingly respectful partnership with him through spell instruction, potion analysis, and ingredient trading 67 148 180.
Snape is intensely possessive of rare potion ingredients and becomes furious when he learns that Luan sold Snowberry, an extinct ingredient, without informing him. Even so, he ultimately negotiates for more rather than severing their arrangement 227 230.
Despite his harsh manner, Snape is protective of students when genuine danger arises. He defends Luan from Dark Wizards, challenges Umbridge over the Unicorn crisis, and risks himself to protect Harry and Luan from Voldemort 303 301 310.

- Describes Dark Magic as a double-edged sword that strengthens the mind while gradually damaging its user 367.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Hogwarts Potions Professor
Snape establishes himself as the feared Potions professor, favoring Malfoy while harshly questioning and penalizing Gryffindors. His classes drive many students to fear Potions, though he recognizes Luan's steady brewing technique and knowledge 21 71 90.
Investigation of the Philosopher's Stone
After being wounded by Fluffy, Snape pushes Dumbledore to strengthen the Stone's defenses and investigate Quirrell. Students initially mistake his secretive behavior and injury for evidence that he is the thief 67 93 150.
Partnership with Luan
Snape's suspicion of Luan's mysterious ingredients evolves into a calculated exchange. He trades advanced spells for marine ingredients, helps sell Luan's stock under his own name, writes him a pharmacy recommendation, and brews specialized Growth Potion for Luan's Spirit Tree 148 180 183 209.
Voldemort's Return at the Stone
Snape confronts Voldemort's shadow beneath the trapdoor. Voldemort manipulates him through Lily and Harry, attempts to take his body, and nearly succeeds before Luan's Mirror Guard intervenes. Snape then commits to protecting Harry and Luan 309 310 311 314.
Mentor in Dark Magic
Snape becomes one of Luan's principal sources of advanced and dangerous magical knowledge. He teaches Fiendfyre with strict safeguards, discusses Voldemort's history and weaknesses, and emphasizes that power without restraint corrupts the wielder 366 367.
Notable Quotes

“At your young age! How can your mind be filled with thoughts of killing people?” 289
“Put away that condescending attitude. You can't even figure out Potions, how could you possibly understand Magical Creatures!” 301
Trivia
