Background

Luan came from Xilin Town and spent part of his early life living beneath a bridge. For more than four years, locals called him a “Half-baked Spiritualist,” leaving him determined to prove that he could truly wield magic. He entered the British wizarding world with little money, bought second-hand Hogwarts supplies, and was sorted into Gryffindor by choice after the Sorting Hat recognized his courage, honesty, and ambition. 6 11 15 21

His early Hogwarts education was hindered by weak foundational knowledge and difficulty with magical phonetics, but he compensated through exceptional memory and an extreme study routine. He began pursuing wandmaking because he wanted to test whether Hogwarts magic could function in Xilin, eventually crafting a wand from willow wood and a rare unicorn-horn core. 16 17 33 45

Luan's contact with the second world drew him into Xilin's war. After surviving repeated encounters with the Night Owl, he became increasingly conscious that his actions endangered Brad, Neil, Zalan, and their families. He accepted responsibility for protecting them, helped relocate the Old Soldier Alley residents by sea, and began treating magical strength as necessary for survival rather than an academic pursuit. 47 76 79 95

Personality

Luan is practical, frugal, and intensely focused on results. He readily buys used supplies, accepts useful gifts without pretension, and prefers magic that can solve immediate problems—especially protection, restraint, healing, construction, and material production. 6 89 162

He is skeptical of prophecy and prefers preparation, knowledge, and individual choice. Even after the Star Ember tribes identify him as the prophesied successor of their High Priest, he initially rejects both the title and the idea that fate should define him. 170 191

Despite his caution, Luan is compassionate toward those under his protection. He refuses to expose Brad to the Night Owl, frees enslaved pirates, shares captured resources with allies, and insists that magical ability does not make one person inherently superior to another. 76 187 200 275

His ambition is tempered by long-term thinking. He seeks not only to become stronger but to establish safe places for magical study, improve ordinary people's living conditions, and reform a magical world he sees as corrupted by exploitation and slavery. 152 202 284

Abilities & Skills

Wizard Bar Perception

Luan can perceive the Wizard Bars above people, allowing him to estimate magical strength and identify potential magical talent.

  • He first observes Wizard Bars among the wizards of Diagon Alley. 5
  • He tracks the effect of learning, practice, talent, and magical tools on magical-strength growth. 54
  • He identifies Ya and ten other children as possessing magical talent, later confirming his assessments through Spirit Tree testing. 198 200

Exceptional Memory and Memory Rewind

Luan possesses an unusually precise memory that develops into a specialized memory magic.

  • He can accurately recall material after a single reading, which Hermione verifies by testing him on wandmaking knowledge. 17
  • His Memory Rewind recreates recent events in detail, allowing him to review battles, identify mistakes, and repeatedly study remembered material. 281
  • Curse energy enhances the spell and his learning efficiency, but also suppresses Wizard Bar growth derived from knowledge and experience in the other world. 281
  • Mental manipulation from the Unbelievers' leader triggers Memory Rewind automatically, protecting his consciousness and transporting him into a strange forest-like mental space. 279

Spellcasting and Charm Modification

Luan specializes in rapid, precise casting and studies spells structurally rather than merely memorizing their effects.

  • His high-intensity training improves his recovery rate from two full-power casting sessions per day to five. 73
  • He can cast nine Petrifying Charms in the time adult Unbeliever wizards need to complete one complex magical offense. 155
  • He practices silent and wandless spellcasting, confirming that his method works. 140
  • He studies charm modification by deconstructing spells, including growth magic and the Expansion Charm. 73 166
  • His major combat spells include Locomotor Mortis, Petrifying Charm, Obstacle Charm, Shield Charm, Thunderclap Explosion, Flame Blaze, Cutting Curse, and Sectumsempra. 155 186 210 211

Mirror Guard

Luan adapts the Unbelievers' Mirror Tide Reversal into his own defensive magic, known as Mirror Guard.

  • The original spell requires a lengthy ancient-language incantation and twelve sets of hand gestures, making it powerful but impractical in rapid combat. 157
  • Its defensive surface can repel physical projectiles and reflect incoming magic. 157 311
  • Luan uses it to protect himself and others from Voldemort, aided by auxiliary spellcasting rings carried by Bouncing. 311
  • Its second variant withstands firearms, tribal sorcery, and the Little Fire Dragon's breath. 331
  • Dumbledore states that Luan is the only person able to master the Mirror Guard. 313

Wandmaking, Runes, and Alchemy

Luan applies wood carving, magical-material research, and rune study to the creation and improvement of magical tools.

  • He begins wandmaking with branches gifted by the Great Willow Tree and unicorn tail hair supplied by Hagrid. 33 36
  • His custom wand temporarily increases his magical strength, while the completed Old Willow Wand provides a larger half-bar enhancement. 47 189
  • He studies alchemy runes, creates protective arrays, and reinforces Fluffy's collars with rune carving. 156 181
  • He brews and refines potions successfully enough to earn the Bailey Family's patronage and establish trade in healing medicines. 161 316
  • He rejects the Unbelievers' human experimentation and cruel transformation methods, though he studies their principles for safer applications. 282

Flight and Combat Training

Luan uses broom flight, the Giant Squid, and real combat to build practical dueling ability.

  • He trains against the Giant Squid's tentacles to improve spell speed, defensive timing, and consecutive casting. 151 170
  • He uses a broomstick to conduct reconnaissance, pursue enemies, and cast spells while airborne. 237 269
  • He defeats Lang with a single Locomotor Mortis and counters Great Shaman Hailan's Wind Summoning Technique in a casting-speed contest. 193
  • He defeats adult wizards, the transformed Montoya, and the fire serpent through rapid spell combinations and tactical preparation. 155 186 187
