Background / History
Loki grew up in Asgard as Odin’s son and Thor’s brother, despite his Frost Giant ancestry. He inherited his mother’s illusion magic and learned spells from childhood. He felt disliked in Asgard, remembering Thor as one of the few people who sometimes played with him 72 91 188.
Discovering his origins undermined his pride in his family and royal position. He came to see himself as a pawn linking two races, while everything he valued seemed to belong to Thor. His pursuit of Odin’s approval included killing his biological father; later, he sought the Infinity Stones as a means of winning recognition and surpassing his brother 71 118 303.
Despite rejecting Asgard during arguments with Thor, Loki continued to regard himself as Odin’s son and an Asgardian citizen. When offered a portal home, he refused because he feared disappointing Odin with his current appearance 91.
Appearance
- Human guise: Black hair, human-colored skin, and dark green clothing; he wears a robe when exposed inside Tony’s base 70 116 254.
- Frost Giant features: Deep blue or crystalline ice-blue skin, blood-red eyes, and markings spreading across his skin 72 91 119.
- Ice horns: Antler-like projections appear in one transformation; during the city defense, his solid-ice horns resemble a bull’s 91 119.
- Full giant form: His body enlarges rapidly enough to tear apart his Asgardian leather armor 192.
- Cold aura: Visible wisps of freezing air surround him when his ice powers are active 188 254.
Personality
Loki is theatrical, cruel, and eager to dominate others. In Germany, he enjoys forcing civilians to kneel and attempts to kill an elderly man who resists. During the New York invasion, he takes pleasure in the destruction and ultimately freezes his remaining Chitauri soldiers along with the city’s inhabitants 65 72 75.
His schemes are driven by a desire to be noticed. Lin Feng identifies recognition—not simply conquest—as the thread connecting Loki’s childhood resentment, attempts to impress Odin, and interest in becoming a hero. The possibility of receiving admiration rather than hatred briefly makes him enthusiastic about defending Tony’s city 118.
Loki is also pragmatic about survival. He negotiates, flatters, begs, or changes sides when threatened, and prefers planning to fighting a vastly stronger opponent directly. His hostility toward Thor does not erase their bond: he hesitates to kill him and later risks himself to protect him 131 188 192 303.
Abilities & Skills
Frost Giant Ice Manipulation
- Generates freezing winds, icy mist, barriers, and weapons, including spears and daggers 72 96 119 190.
- Freezes Thor’s legs and wounds him with an ice dagger whose cold paralyzes his flesh 72.
- Creates a twenty-meter defensive wall against a zombie horde 119.
- Uses passive cold to cool lava beneath his feet while shielding Thor 192.
- Becomes physically stronger in a sufficiently cold environment 121.
- His power varies sharply with his form and equipment. While weakened, in human guise, and without the Casket of Ancient Winters, he says he can freeze only the room around him; Asgardian divine power suppresses his Frost Giant talents 303.
Illusion Magic and Disguise
- Creates numerous apparent copies of himself to surround and intimidate a crowd 65.
- Disguises himself as a security guard to move the wormhole machine through Stark Tower; Jarvis initially fails to detect the deception 71.
- Impersonates one of Tony’s robots, until Lin Feng exposes him 116.
- Repeatedly attempts illusion-assisted escape, but Lin Feng detects each attempt 118.
- Can use Asgardian interstellar projection magic 108.
Physical Strength and Combat
- Throws Steve Rogers together with his vibranium shield 65.
- Defeats Stark Tower’s guards through physical combat without setting down the wormhole machine 71.
- Uses conjured daggers and surprise attacks; one ambush nearly strikes Lin Feng’s eye and briefly disrupts his telekinetic restraint of Thor 71 131.
- Ordinary guns and missiles are described as no threat to him, and a chainsaw pressed against his forehead leaves no mark 116 118.
- Can still suffer devastating injuries: an unseen attack nearly cuts through his lower abdomen, requiring Lin Feng to heal him 120.
Other Magic and Tactical Skills
- Emits green magical energy while resisting Lin Feng’s attacks 192.
- Possesses remote teleportation, mind control, and energy projection, though Lin Feng considers these abilities insufficiently developed 123.
- Coordinates freezing attacks with Hulk’s ground-breaking strike and Tony’s blade attack 190.
- Recognizes when a fight is unwinnable and urges Thor to retreat rather than pursue Lin Feng 131.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Casket of Ancient Winters — Amplifies his innate cold enough to freeze Manhattan and nearly a million people. Lin Feng later returns it for the defense of Tony’s city; it remains effective even after Lin Feng absorbs much of its power 75 118 119.
- Mind Stone Scepter — Fires energy beams. Sprite and Makkari steal it during his confrontation with Steve in Germany; Steve’s shield can reflect its attack back at Loki 65.
- Tesseract / Space Stone — Brought to Stark Tower for the wormhole operation that enables the Chitauri invasion 70 71.
- Wormhole machine — Installed on Stark Tower’s roof. Its energy protection withstands Thor’s repeated hammer and lightning attacks 71 72.
- Conjured weapons — Uses thrown daggers, ice daggers, and ice spears 71 72 96 188.
- Chitauri flyer — Catches him after Thor throws him from Stark Tower and carries him above the city before his freezing attack 72 75.
Relationships
- Thor — Brother and rival for over a thousand years. Loki alternates between attacking, rescuing, and fighting alongside him; he protects Thor from Lin Feng’s lightning despite their resentment 72 131 192 259.
- Odin — Father by upbringing whose approval Loki craves. Loki fears disappointing him and remains emotionally attached to Asgard despite claiming its fate is irrelevant to him 91 303.
- Laufey — Biological father. Loki asserts the name “Loki Laufeyson” when rejecting Thor’s identification of him as an Odinson 72.
- Lin Feng — Adversary, coercive ally, healer, and eventual enemy again. Lin Feng recruits him for his potential against Thanos, encourages him to try heroism, and later blacklists him after his betrayal 118 120 131 303.
- Tony Stark — Initially seeks revenge for New York and threatens Loki through his robots. Their cooperation briefly becomes cordial enough for Loki to join a toast celebrating Tony’s new body 116 129.
- Thanos — Former associate and eventual threat. Lin Feng explains that Thanos used Loki as bait to draw out Earth’s Infinity Stones 91 303.
- Sprite and Makkari — Steal his scepter before he can react, forcing him to change tactics against Steve 65.
