Ninjutsu follows a process of hand seals guiding internal chakra, transforming its elemental nature, and shaping its structure into a technique. A Great Fireball Technique, for example, uses seals to form and convert chakra into fire before expelling it. 164

Chakra, Memory, and Consciousness

A person’s chakra preserves information about them. Kurama explains that Naruto’s retained chakra allowed him to possess memories and knowledge from another point in time, including the Flying Thunder God Technique. 27

Future Naruto’s chakra, which originated from a Naruto who died after Kurama was extracted, becomes increasingly difficult to detect as its power fades. Naruto nevertheless finds residual traces by repeatedly examining and separating the chakra within himself. 140

Naruto’s chakra has contained traces from several beings:

• Naruto Uzumaki — his own chakra, the second-largest portion during childhood. 140
• Kurama — the largest portion of Naruto’s childhood chakra mixture. 140

When consciousness communicates through chakra, the inner world may take a form shaped by the host’s mental state. Naruto’s inner world changes from a dim sewer during his lonely childhood into a sunny meadow as he matures. 155

Tailed Beast Chakra and Jinchūriki

Tailed Beasts differ fundamentally from humans: they have no separation between physical energy, mental energy, chakra, soul, or consciousness. Every portion of a Tailed Beast’s chakra is part of the beast itself. 163

For a Jinchūriki, Tailed Beast chakra gradually becomes intertwined with their own chakra over years of coexistence.

• The two chakra sources become difficult to separate completely. 27
• Extracting the Tailed Beast normally kills the Jinchūriki because the beast functions as an essential part of their life. 27
