Background / History
Jiraiya was summoned back to Konoha after Naruto Uzumaki unexpectedly received memories spanning the next eleven years. He personally examined Naruto’s mind through Inoichi Yamanaka’s technique and accepted that the future memories—including intelligence on Akatsuki, Pain, Obito, and Orochimaru—were genuine. Despite Hiruzen Sarutobi’s concern, Jiraiya departed for Amegakure to confront his former pupils Nagato and Konan. 2
In Amegakure, Jiraiya fought Konan and the Six Paths of Pain in Sage Mode. He used Naruto’s future knowledge to prioritize and seal the Animal Path, identify the abilities of the remaining Paths, and exploit the Deva Path’s five-second interval between gravitational techniques. Pain ultimately severed Jiraiya’s left arm and captured him, but Jiraiya and the two Sage Toads trapped the Paths in a sound-based genjutsu. By driving a Black Rod into his own shoulder and following its chakra connection, he identified Nagato’s location in Amegakure. 4 5 6 7
After surviving the battle, Jiraiya continued mentoring Naruto. He accompanied him to Mount Myōboku, supported his Sage Mode training and confrontation with Kurama, discussed the Great Toad Sage’s prophecy with him, and later brought him along to recruit Tsunade as the Fifth Hokage. 19 20 22 24
Years later, Jiraiya remained involved in Konoha’s major operations, including the effort to capture Orochimaru and the monitoring of threats tied to the Rinnegan. He also observed Naruto’s extraordinary development in Space-Time Ninjutsu and continued offering Sasuke guidance as Sasuke trained independently. 38 49 59 64 67
When Edo Madara attacked Nagato in Amegakure, Jiraiya returned to assist his former student. The two fought side-by-side for the first time, but Madara activated a contingency within Nagato’s Rinnegan and took control of him. Konan later found Jiraiya injured after the battle and supported him. 145 146 148
In a rewritten timeline witnessed by Naruto, a younger Jiraiya initially selected Minato Namikaze as a potential pawn. Naruto and Shisui altered Jiraiya’s will with Kotoamatsukami, after which Jiraiya became Minato’s genuine mentor. 173
Appearance
Jiraiya is a tall, white-haired man who initially appears middle-aged. He wears a red vest, wooden sandals, and a forehead protector marked with the character for “Oil” rather than Konoha’s leaf symbol. 2
- Long white hair and two red lines running from beneath his eyes to his jaw. 2
- Wears a large scroll during travel. 22
- Lost his left arm below the elbow during his battle against Pain; his left sleeve remains empty afterward. 7 22
- Develops visible toad-like facial and bodily traits while using Sage Mode. 3
Personality
Jiraiya is outwardly boisterous, flirtatious, and shamelessly interested in women’s bathhouses, often justifying his behavior as “research” for his writing. Naruto commonly calls him “Pervy Sage,” a nickname Jiraiya tolerates with varying embarrassment. 19 22 28
Beneath this unserious exterior, he is highly perceptive, cautious, and willing to shoulder dangerous responsibilities alone. He immediately recognized the importance of Naruto’s future memories, prepared extensively before entering Amegakure, and refused to abandon Nagato despite knowing the encounter could kill him. 2 3 6
His strongest trait is his commitment to his students. Jiraiya views Nagato’s fall as a personal failure and repeatedly attempts to reach him rather than simply destroy him. He also maintains confidence in Naruto’s potential, encourages Naruto through difficult training, and continues to guide Sasuke with measured advice rather than control. 6 19 25 67
Abilities & Skills
Sage Mode
Jiraiya uses Mount Myōboku’s Sage Mode, drawing natural chakra with Fukasaku and Shima’s help.
- Greatly enhances his physical strength, speed, durability, sensory perception, and chakra reserves. 3 5
- Allows him to detect chakra mixed into Amegakure’s rain and react to Pain’s attacks at extreme speed. 3 4
- Enables powerful taijutsu such as Frog Kumite, whose strikes can land even when conventional contact is avoided. 7
- Initially requires Fukasaku and Shima to help him gather natural chakra; he admits Naruto’s Sage Mode is more complete than his own. 3 6
- Refines the technique further in later years, though Shima notes that a healthy Nagato would remain beyond him in direct combat. 144
Toad Summoning
Jiraiya is contracted with the toads of Mount Myōboku.
- Fukasaku and Shima — elder Sage Toads who assist with natural chakra gathering, elemental combination techniques, battlefield coordination, and genjutsu. 3 4 7
- Gama Tora — entrusted with Naruto’s seal key and sent back to Mount Myōboku when Jiraiya anticipates danger. 3
- Uses the Summoning Technique to call powerful creatures and cooperate with the Sage Toads in combat. 3 4
Sage Art Techniques
Jiraiya combines Sage Mode with elemental ninjutsu and large-scale attacks.
- Sage Art: Toad Oil Bomb — fires numerous oil projectiles to restrict an opponent’s escape routes. 4
- Sage Art: Goemon — a three-person combination of Jiraiya’s oil, Shima’s fire, and Fukasaku’s wind; it creates an immense wave of burning oil capable of incinerating Pain’s summoned hounds and evaporating nearby rainwater. 4
- Fire Style: Toad Oil Flame Bullet — launches a dragon-like stream of fire and oil. 7
- Sage Art: Super Tailed Beast Rasengan — a massive, heavy sphere of Sage Chakra used to force down Madara’s Susanoo blade. 145
Rasengan
Jiraiya can form and use powerful Rasengan variants.
- Sage Art: Big Ball Rasengan — used against Animal Path Pain’s Three-Headed Dog. 4
- Carries a Rasengan while attacking Madara, though Madara’s Rinnegan absorbs the chakra before impact. 146
Hair Techniques
Jiraiya weaponizes his long hair for defense, restraint, and terrain control.
- Needle Jizo — hardens and wraps his hair around his body to block Paper Senbon and mitigate Asura Path’s self-destruction. 4 7
- Rampage Lion Technique — extends his hair to bind enemies or anchor himself to trees against Banshō Ten'in. 4 6
Sealing, Traps, and Analysis
Jiraiya is an experienced tactician who adapts quickly to unfamiliar abilities.
- Sealed Animal Path Pain with a prepared scroll, preventing it from summoning the other Paths. 5
- Used knowledge from Naruto’s future memories to identify the Six Paths’ roles and target their vulnerabilities. 5 6
- Exploited the Deva Path’s gravitational cooldown by setting a concealed steel-wire trap underground. 7
- Used Pain’s Black Rod to trace its chakra link and locate Nagato. 7
- Recognized similarities between Kimimaro’s eye abilities and the Rinnegan from his prior battle with Nagato. 59
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Oil-marked forehead protector. 2
- Large scroll used for sealing operations. 5 22
- Wooden sandals and red vest. 2
- Black Rod taken from Deva Path Pain and used to trace Nagato’s chakra connection. 7
