Background / History

Warring States Childhood

Izuna is Uchiha Tajima’s second son and Madara’s younger brother. As a child, he is talented, arrogant, and already intensely attached to Madara. An early encounter with Gin ends with all his attacks missing and his ninja-tool pouch emptied, prompting him to demand when his cousin became so strong 24.

He trains regularly with Madara, who punishes lapses in concentration. Gin later recommends broader training because Izuna relies too heavily on his Sharingan, arguing that an Uchiha should develop both physical and mental skills 113 115.

During the Uchiha–Senju conflict, Gin saves both brothers from an ambush by Senju Butsuma and his son 76.

Mangekyo Awakening

Gin engineers a confrontation using actors and clones impersonating the Senju brothers. Izuna attacks the apparent Hashirama, only for his sword to be caught and broken barehanded. Gin’s subsequent apparent death triggers Izuna’s Mangekyo Sharingan awakening alongside Madara’s and Chiri’s 151 152 155.

Izuna initially struggles with his new Susanoo and exhausts himself through heavy Dojutsu use. After recovering enough to act, he casts Amaterasu on the supposed Tobirama to help Madara. The target escapes by removing his burning armor, while Izuna becomes too weak to defend himself. Madara shields him from a Wood Man’s descending palm 153 155.

Clan Administration and Marriage

Izuna grows more confident with age, becoming a forceful opponent of Tobirama rather than the easily bullied youth Gin remembers. He continues fighting recklessly, taunting Tobirama and resisting his father’s orders 201 210.

After Tajima’s staged death, Izuna mourns him and blames himself for failing to protect him. He subsequently delivers the Uchiha Clan’s challenge to the Senju for a decisive battle 213 214.

Clan work increasingly falls to Izuna while Madara pursues training and Gin avoids responsibility. The workload damages his health; he later uses a clone to handle affairs while pursuing Mihui Zi, a fruit-shop owner he has fallen for 236 285 286 307.

When Madara leaves Konoha, Izuna becomes acting Clan Leader. The clan develops steadily under him, although its members become less flamboyant. In Konoha Year 4, two years after Madara’s departure, Izuna marries Mihui Zi 310.

Hokage Election and Withdrawal

During Madara’s Hokage tenure, Izuna serves as his official strategist and Jonin Squad captain. Madara also places the Mission Hall under his authority to strengthen the Uchiha Clan’s position within the village 433 646.

After Tobirama’s reported death and Madara’s disappearance, Izuna becomes the leading Hokage candidate. He wins the election with support that includes Senju votes redirected after Taohua consults Gin 520 524.

The victory brings him little satisfaction. He sees no appeal in holding office without Tobirama there and cannot commit himself to village leadership while Madara remains missing. He voluntarily withdraws, allowing runner-up Hiruzen to become Hokage 525 527 528.

Wave Country and Tajima’s Survival

Izuna travels to Wave Country with Fuyuu and Gin on an official trading-company protection mission. His personal aim is to confront the elderly daimyo over what he believes is unwanted attention toward his son 528.

The daimyo is actually Tajima, who faked his death years earlier. Izuna’s attempt to punish him with genjutsu backfires, leaving Izuna trapped in an illusion. Even after waking, he struggles to accept his father’s survival; the resulting confrontation ends when Gin knocks both father and son unconscious 529 530.

Tajima explains that the overseas arrangement protects the clan’s future if its influence in Konoha collapses. Izuna returns to settle his village responsibilities, relinquishes the Mission Hall, and eventually prepares to leave Konoha with his family, entrusting remaining affairs to Gin 531 532 533 562.

By the time Lucha seeks his intervention in a clan leadership dispute, Izuna is living luxuriously in Wave Country under the title of Retired Emperor 614.

Staged Death and Diend Mission

In Konoha Year 27, Gin announces that Izuna has died after eating poisonous pufferfish sashimi. The death is fabricated: Izuna discards his public ninja identity and even attends his own funeral banquet in disguise 672 675.

Gin then gives him an assignment concerning Madara and a mysterious enemy, together with the Anti-Decade Knight System. Izuna initially dislikes its lack of close-combat capability, but adopts the identity of Diend. His first confrontation with Senju Hi Shin teaches him to rely on summoned Knights rather than armor strength alone 675 676 678.

Izuna later defeats Madara for the first—and explicitly only—time by exploiting his brother’s familiar fighting habits and attacking the vulnerable rear of his Decade Armor. After revealing himself, he sincerely offers to guard Madara’s back, though Madara ultimately prefers Gin’s proposed mechanical reinforcement 705.

Battles Against Jigen

Izuna fights alongside Madara against Jigen’s clone forces and intercepts clone 001 to protect a younger ally. Gin repeatedly shields him from attacks beyond his ability to withstand, including a Daikokuten cube and overwhelming Dojutsu pressure 763 764 770 773.

During a later battle, Izuna supplies medicine to the exhausted Madara and saves Ichichuzi from a Black Rod. Left facing Jigen alone, he uses Amaterasu and Susanoo, but Jigen nullifies the flames, tears apart Susanoo, and impales him with miniature Black Rods 878.

Black Zetsu repeatedly risks himself to extract both brothers. After their escape, Izuna urgently offers advanced Glimmering Potions to help the severely weakened Madara 879 880.

Appearance

  • Hair: Distinctive black hair that points upward, remarked upon by Tobirama 139.
  • Eyes: Scarlet Sharingan that develop a patterned Mangekyo form; heavy early use produces blood tears 153 155.
  • Wedding attire: A pure black kimono 310.
  • Casual fashion: Wears an unusual punk outfit while visiting Mihui Zi’s fruit shop 285.
  • Later physique: Becomes noticeably rounder after retiring to Wave Country 675.
  • Knight form: Blue armor that conceals his identity as Diend 676 678.

Personality

Izuna’s strongest attachment is to his family, especially Madara. He repeatedly attacks stronger opponents to protect his brother, refuses to prioritize the Hokage position over finding him, and later risks his life defending Madara’s companions 151 527 878.

His confidence often becomes arrogance. He taunts Tobirama, underestimates opponents, and reacts badly to provocation. Newly acquired Knight power briefly makes him feel invincible, despite being a rookie unfamiliar with the system’s intended fighting style 210 678 770.

He is more capable administratively than his impulsive battlefield behavior suggests. His Mission Hall management earns praise even from Tobirama. Nevertheless, years of overwork leave him eager to enjoy Wave Country’s comforts instead of continuing as the clan’s burdened deputy 236 532 533.

Izuna is not strongly attached to political power. He accepts Madara’s principle that Konoha belongs to no single clan and supports handing the Hokage position to someone capable. His hostility toward the Senju also has limits: after fighting Hi Shin, he worries that his summons may have killed her, reasoning that his grudge against her father should not extend to his family 525 677.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Genjutsu

  • Uses Sharingan-based genjutsu to intimidate or punish an opponent with a glance 529.
  • Develops the Mangekyo Sharingan after Gin’s staged death 152.
  • Remains vulnerable to superior illusion users: Tajima reverses his attempted genjutsu and traps him in a nightmare involving Tobirama attacking his kidneys 529 530.
  • His ordinary Mangekyo cannot withstand the same pressure as Madara’s Eternal Eyes when Jigen releases overwhelming Dojutsu Power 764.

Amaterasu

  • Produces black flames through his Mangekyo, first demonstrated against the clone playing Tobirama 155.
  • Early use worsens his physical exhaustion and eye strain 155.
  • Tobirama considers his Amaterasu powerful but comparatively inflexible, especially beside Hikari’s precise control 254.
  • Burning equipment can be discarded to evade the flames; Jigen later nullifies the technique outright 155 878.

Susanoo

  • Manifests a bright yellow Susanoo, including a second-stage form and a half-body skeletal defense 153 556.
  • Uses it offensively during his Mangekyo awakening and defensively to shield spectators from shockwaves at the Knight examination 153 556.
  • Initial use consumes Dojutsu Power rapidly enough to leave him kneeling and bleeding from his eyes 153.
  • Its protection is insufficient against Jigen, who tears it apart barehanded 878.

Swordsmanship and Close-Quarters Combat

  • His established fighting style centers on a blade, close combat, and fire techniques 675.
  • Trains with Madara and attacks with powerful, fully committed sword strikes 113 151.
  • Hashirama’s barehanded destruction of his sword demonstrates the limits of that approach against vastly stronger opponents 151.

Diend Knight System

  • Specializes in shooting and summoning, with no close-combat capability in the system’s intended design 675.
  • Fires energy attacks from a gun fitted with a card slot 755 770.
  • Summons card-based Tailed Beast Knights, including the Two-Tails, Eight-Tails, and Three-Tails 678 755.
  • Can dismiss a summon by removing its card from the gun 755.
  • Summons are time-limited; his initial selection consists only of the Two-Tails and Eight-Tails cards Gin provides 678.
  • Uses his summons and knowledge of Madara’s habits to secure his sole victory over his older brother 705.

Administration and Leadership

  • Leads the Uchiha Clan’s steady development during Madara’s absence 310.
  • Maintains high mission-completion rates and strong client and ninja satisfaction as Mission Hall administrator 533.
  • Receives explicit praise from Tobirama for his management ability 533.
  • Uses a clone to cover clan duties while pursuing his personal life 286.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Long blade / katana — His customary weapon before adopting Diend’s ranged fighting style; one sword is broken by the apparent Hashirama during the staged confrontation 139 151 675.
  • Life-force armor — Wears an unusual suit radiating immense Life Force during battles alongside Madara 163.
  • Anti-Decade Knight System — Gin’s transformation system that allows him to become Diend 675.
  • Card-compatible gun and Card Box — Used to fire attacks, activate summons, and store recovered cards 755 770.
  • Tailed Beast Cards — Documented cards include the Two-Tails, Eight-Tails, and Three-Tails 678 755.
  • Advanced Glimmering Potions — Carries several large bottles and offers them for Madara’s recovery 880.

Relationships

  • Uchiha Madara — Older brother, training partner, and lifelong rival. Izuna handles much of his administrative workload and repeatedly protects him; their Knight rivalry eventually gives Izuna his only victory over him 113 307 705 878.
  • Uchiha Gin — Older cousin, protector, adviser, and Knight-system provider. Izuna generally follows his advice, while Gin’s schemes repeatedly manipulate his emotions and public identity 76 152 532 672 675.
  • Uchiha Tajima — Father. Izuna mourns his supposed death, then discovers him alive as Wave Country’s daimyo. Their reunion is strained by genjutsu, conflicting expectations, and Tajima’s refusal to retire 213 529 530 672.
  • Uchiha Mihui Zi — Wife and former romantic interest. Izuna begins courting her through visits to her fruit shop and offers to investigate its declining business before their marriage 285 310.
  • Uchiha Fuyuu — Son. Protecting him motivates Izuna’s journey to confront the Wave Country daimyo; Izuna initially resists Tajima’s plan for Fuyuu to inherit the position 525 528 532.
  • Uchiha Fugaku — Younger son. Izuna visits him secretly after staging his death and later watches his Chidori training with satisfaction 675 710.
  • Tobirama Senju — Longstanding rival and political coworker. Their hostility coexists with Tobirama’s respect for Izuna’s administrative skills; Tobirama’s absence helps strip the Hokage position of its appeal for Izuna 210 525 533.
  • Senju Hi Shin — Tobirama’s daughter and Izuna’s later opponent. She doubts his reported death and fights his disguised Diend form; he recognizes her father’s mannerisms and worries about injuring her too seriously 672 676 677.
  • Uchiha Hikari — A powerful clanswoman he addresses as “Sister Hikari.” Having experienced her strength, he is astonished that Mito can fight her evenly 556.
  • Black Zetsu / “Uchiha Sasuke” — Madara’s companion and eventual battlefield rescuer. He repeatedly attempts to save Izuna from Jigen despite the danger to himself 705 879.
