Background

Madara and Hashirama Senju were once close friends despite the Uchiha–Senju conflict. During an early battlefield encounter, Madara deliberately ends their bond and awakens his Sharingan, leaving Hashirama deeply hurt 76.

He repeatedly measures himself against Hashirama’s Wood Release. His confidence causes him to underestimate Hashirama during a rematch, resulting in capture by the Wood Human Technique and the loss of his Sharingan from Chakra exhaustion 138. Six years later, Madara succeeds Uchiha Tajima as the Uchiha Clan Leader and openly expresses his fondness for war 162.

After rushing to aid what he believes is his dying father, Madara is manipulated into grief by Uchiha Gin’s disguise as Tajima 212. Believing Tajima dead, he awakens the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, summons a Complete Body Susanoo, and challenges Hashirama in a revenge-driven battle 214.

Following Konoha’s founding, Madara attempts to establish himself as a Hokage candidate by bringing four Sharingan-controlled Tailed Beasts to the village. Hashirama is nevertheless inaugurated as First Hokage, while Madara sets his sights on becoming the Second 245 251. He later serves as Hokage Assistant after returning to Konoha and being cleared of actions attributed to the Black Fox Knight 345.

Unable to abandon his wish to defeat Hashirama, Madara temporarily leaves Konoha to seek the Nine-Tails and the power of a Tailed Beast Knight. He seals Izuna when his brother tries to stop him, then returns with a Tailed Beast Card and challenges Hashirama again 310 335. He eventually becomes Konoha’s Second Hokage during Hashirama’s disappearance 433 436.

Despite his aggression and stated enjoyment of war, Madara supports peace between the clans and rejects the idea of plunging the world into Infinite Tsukuyomi when Konoha and the Uchiha Clan are prospering 252 272. As Hokage, he places Konoha’s younger generation under his protection and resolves to save every village ninja he can 770.
