"Be careful." Tierra removed his hand from Hermione's arm after speaking.

"Th-thank you." Hermione said, blushing, completely unaware that a segmented worm nearly the same color as her clothes was clinging to her robes.

Hermione struggled through the crowd until she reached the stands where Snape was. She hurried along the row of seats behind him, breathing heavily from the cold weather and the chaotic crowd, her movements somewhat rough.

As she passed Professor Quirrell, she knocked him headlong into the seats in front of him. The worm that had been tightly stuck to her robes suddenly fell off and, taking advantage of the confusion, quietly burrowed into Professor Quirrell's body and vanished.

After great difficulty, Hermione finally squeezed her way to Snape's side. She crouched down, drew her wand, thought for a few seconds, then murmured several carefully chosen words. A cluster of bright blue flames burst from the tip of her wand and pounced on the hem of Snape's robes.

It took Snape about thirty seconds to realize he was on fire. Only when the teachers behind him patted his shoulder and shouted in his ear did he react.

"Ah—" Snape jumped to his feet in fright.

Hearing the cry, Hermione knew her job was done. She quickly gathered the flames off him, tucked them into her pocket, and hurried back along the row of seats.

On the way back, she bumped into someone and stumbled again.

"Neville, look!" Ron pointed excitedly into the sky.

Harry's broom had stopped bucking, and he was able to climb back onto it.

For the past five minutes, Neville had kept his face buried in Hagrid's jacket, crying.
