Background and History

Mito Uzumaki witnessed Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha establish Konoha. Its founding ideal was a place where people no longer lived amid constant slaughter and where children could grow up in peace, protected by bonds of family and comrades. 139 144

By the 36th year of the Konoha Calendar, Konoha was locked in escalating disputes with Sunagakure over mission shares and alleged cross-border plundering through the Land of Rain. The Land of Rain became the buffer zone for the conflict between major powers. 1

Konoha’s generations-long alliance with the Land of Whirlpools deteriorated after Danzō withheld intelligence concerning Kirigakure’s impending invasion. Uzumaki elders later accused Konoha of allowing the invasion to proceed while preparing to seize clan assets, shattering their trust in the village. 41 54 59

The Sky Legion launched a coordinated aerial assault on Konoha, bombing the Ninja Academy and destroying the Hokage Building. The attack was followed by the Nine-Tails’ rampage, which devastated the village and damaged the Hokage Rock. 87 91 101 144

Konoha remained functional after the disaster, but more than two-thirds of its buildings required repair. Fear and prolonged stress contributed to rising crime and violent disputes among residents. 144 190

During the Land of Rain campaign, Danzō admitted to massacring Rain civilians and framing Sunagakure in order to force Hanzo into war. Konoha later planned to assassinate Hanzo despite relying on Rain Village’s intervention against Sunagakure, and ultimately joined Sunagakure in attacking Rain Village. 207 215

Governance and Institutions

• Hokage — Hiruzen Sarutobi serves as the Third Hokage and convenes major clan leaders and jōnin to determine wartime policy. 61

Will of Fire

The Will of Fire teaches that the older generation should protect and entrust the future to younger people, who represent the village’s new leaves and hope. 63

Mito Uzumaki believed Konoha had strayed from this principle under Hiruzen’s administration, criticizing a system in which allies, clans, civilians, and children could be treated as expendable for the village’s survival. 139

Tensions between the ideal and Konoha’s conduct are particularly visible in its treatment of the Uchiha. During the Nine-Tails crisis, the clan was ordered to remain with civilians rather than pursue the Sky Legion, which many Uchiha interpreted as deliberate suppression. 102

• Hokage Rock — A mountain monument carved with the faces of the first three Hokage; regarded as Konoha’s foremost spiritual symbol. It was heavily damaged during the Sky Legion attack and Nine-Tails rampage. 101 144
