Background / History

Dismissal and return to the capital

Xiong Zhigang was the Pacification Commissioner of Pingsu. His upright conduct offended the Autumn Pool Faction, which exploited failed peace talks with foreign tribes to remove him from office. When the emperor later intended to restore him, the faction spread rumors, exposed his location, and hired Green Forest bandits to murder him under the pretense of targeting a corrupt official. 82 83

While traveling toward the capital, Xiong Zhigang fought beside his son, Xiong Yichen, and later accepted Chu Danqing's protection despite initially trying to keep him out of the danger. He promised to repay Chu Danqing if restored to power. 82 83

He identified that the plots against him involved more than the Autumn Pool Faction: the Surveillance Factory was likely using the Jade Faced Rakshasa to murder Yuan Chong, destroy Yuan Family Village, and frame Xiong Zhigang. He changed the group's route to evade pursuit, only to discover that a former subordinate may have leaked the shortcut. 103

The Crown Prince's faction ultimately sent Wu Hong to escort Xiong Zhigang by water under the Eastern Palace banner, since restoring Xiong's military authority would provide the Crown Prince with a vital armed force. 104

Border command and covenant

After the Crown Prince faction's victory, Xiong Zhigang returned to the border because a Sushen army of 50,000 was preparing to move south. He continued managing military and civil affairs while guarding against invasion. 117 139

He and Chu Danqing entered a Blood Oath Covenant. Xiong Zhigang agreed that, if transferred back to the capital, he would resign and assist Chu Danqing; in return, Chu Danqing accepted the task of forcing the Sushen to retreat within three days. 139

Rise as a War Sovereign

With Chu Danqing's military and strategic knowledge and Guo Ming's Three Armies Stratagem, Xiong Zhigang developed his inherited military manual into the foundation of the War Sovereign class. He brought the Flying Bear Iron Cavalry into Chu Danqing's world, turning their alliance into a major legion-based fighting force. 157

Although initially reluctant to take actions that could be construed as treason, Xiong Zhigang eventually agreed to expand his territory after recognizing that he had received extensive support from Chu Danqing while offering too little in return. 200

Chu Danqing further supported Xiong Zhigang's territory with productivity-enhancement items. Xiong understood that reforms would threaten entrenched landlord and gentry interests, leaving him with little room to retreat if he wished to improve common lives and maintain his forces. 239 374

Ascension

As Xiong Zhigang's power grew, Emperor Taichang repeatedly attempted to contain him through honorary titles and political pressure. Xiong refused three offers to become a prince of a different surname, recognizing them as attempts to weaken or eliminate him. 484

After obtaining the Seed of Rank Advancement and gaining access to the power panel, Xiong concluded that surrendering authority would endanger his people, his allies, and his world's future. His generals, scholars, and soldiers—led by Sun Kaiyang—forced him to accept the throne. Emperor Taichang then abdicated and presented the imperial seal. 484

Xiong Zhigang is principled, duty-bound, and politically cautious. He initially refuses to involve Chu Danqing in his problems, rejects calls to replace the emperor, and treats rebellion as unacceptable despite the danger posed by the throne's suspicion of him. 83 200 239

He is also practical and self-aware. He knows that his world cannot match higher-level allies in individual combat, so he concentrates on the strengths of a disciplined army, strategic command, and coordinated force. 255

Though often formal and restrained, Xiong readily acknowledges debts of gratitude. He repeatedly credits Chu Danqing, Guo Ming, and the Divine Might Heavenly King for accelerating his growth, and commits his forces to repay their assistance. 157 200 239
