Background / History

Liu Yandong's direct line was believed extinct after his son vanished during a hunt, his posthumous grandson supposedly died in infancy, and his daughter-in-law Yan Hanyan lost her sanity. When Yan Hanyan brought home an abandoned infant, Liu Ding, Yandong eventually resolved to accept the exceptionally strong child as his grandson despite the clan's objections. 2

To prove Liu Ding was not an enemy infiltrator, Yandong spent more than half the Liu Clan's assets to invite Grand Fate Master Fang Xi to investigate the boy's origins. When Fang concluded that Liu Ding's damaged seven souls would leave him an idiot, Yandong still acknowledged him. He also promised that, twelve years later, Liu Ding and the younger generation would contend for the patriarchal position. 2 3

After Liu Ding vanished during the Golden Lion cub incident, Yandong led a three-day search through dangerous wilderness. Liu Ding's eventual return did not restore Yan Hanyan's condition; she no longer recognized him, leaving Yandong increasingly disheartened and distant. 5

Yandong openly intervened when Liu Ji attempted to kill Liu Ding and Little White Fox following the latter's defeat of Liu Ji's Golden Lion. He subdued Liu Ji, demanded accountability, and concealed the fact that exerting his Cauldron Qi had caused him to cough blood. His long-term use of Cauldron Qi to assist Liu Ding's cultivation was steadily damaging his health. 10

When Xiao Zhi was accused of stealing the Seven Soul-Forging Cauldrons' secrets, Yandong shielded both her dignity and Liu Ding's interests. He exploited flaws in Nie Zhengxu's accusations, then had Xiao Zhi formally detained under his own authority rather than surrendering her to the elders. 11 12

During Liu Ding's coma, Yandong accepted General Jiang's dangerous offer of treatment because no other remedy remained. After Liu Ding recovered from the Black Willow Coffin, General Jiang revealed that Liu Ding was Yandong's biological grandson—the infant Yandong had believed dead. 12 13

Knowing Liu Ding still had to earn the succession through the Sect Lord Contention, Yandong began pressing him to become stronger. He tested Liu Ding's physical strength, encouraged him to protect those he cared about, and later pledged to help him reach Six Soulforging Cauldrons before age sixteen. 14 33

Yandong countered Nie Zhengxu's secret exploitation of the Soul Forging Cauldrons by convening the clan and sharing the medicinal-bath method openly. He later opposed the use of Murong Divine Pill Chamber's Zhe Spirit Liquid, warning that its Taotie Soul Qi would conflict with the Liu Clan's Qilin Soul Qi. 21 40 41

At the medicine-hall showdown, Yandong publicly challenged the Murong Divine Pill Chamber's claims. His examination of injured Liu Clan disciples exposed that their Qilin Soul Qi had been devoured and mutated by Zhe Spirit Liquid, helping drive the Murong Family from Bleser City. 44 47 48

Personality

Liu Yandong is fiercely protective of Liu Ding and Xiao Zhi, even when doing so places him in direct conflict with influential elders. His protection is not unconditional indulgence: after learning Liu Ding's true lineage, he deliberately burdens him with the responsibility of becoming strong enough to defend what he values. 10 14 16

As patriarch, he is politically sharp and verbally formidable. He repeatedly turns opponents' wording against them, recognizes when proof against Nie Zhengxu is insufficient, and uses clan meetings and public disputes to undercut rival schemes. 2 11 21 44

He favors stable, orthodox cultivation over risky shortcuts. He refuses to let Liu Ding use Zhe Spirit Liquid despite pressure from the elders, prioritizing his grandson's future path over a rapid breakthrough. 40 41
