Background

Zhi'er was first encountered as a wounded white civet cat pursued by a Golden Lion near a waterfall. Liu Ding rescued her and sheltered with her in the cave behind the waterfall, where he discovered her store of Spirit Orbs and spirit herbs. She was subsequently revealed to be a fox spirit, and Liu Ding named her Xiao Zhi. 4

Even while still small, she displayed a fierce aura when Liu Ji tried to touch her and showed unusual interest in the Liu Clan's Seven Soul-Forging Cauldrons. 5 She later used the First Soul-Forging Cauldron's medicinal bath to cultivate with Liu Ding. Their shared cultivation continued for more than seven years and changed her into a rare white fox. 7

She proved far more formidable than her size suggested when she defeated Liu Ji's Golden Lion, Mighty, in two swift moves. 9 Her knowledge of the Seven Soul-Forging Cauldrons also allowed her to deduce that the seventh cauldron's formula lacked an ingredient. Repeated experiments with rare herbs and Spirit Fruits eventually enabled her to take human form, though the early transformation was unstable. 11

Her transformation exposed her as a spirit beast to the Liu Clan. Nie Zhengxu sought to have her detained and exploited, while Liu Yandong shielded her from immediate punishment. 11 12 At the clan assembly, Zhi'er and Liu Ding rejected Liu Ji's attempt to claim her through a Spirit Beast Contract. Zhi'er later requested a contract that established her as a Liu Clan member, while requiring anyone seeking her contract to first defeat her in a challenge. 16 17

Appearance

In beast form, Zhi'er is a small white fox with crystal-like eyes. In human form, she appears as a young girl usually dressed in white or snow-white clothing. 5 11 17

She is deeply attached to Liu Ding and consistently acts to protect his health and cultivation. She tends his injuries, prepares medicinal baths, lights incense to prevent his soul from dispersing, and spends considerable resources refining medicine for him. 23 32 34 Her affection can also manifest as jealousy, particularly when Liu Tao is involved. 23 42
