A hoarse, ethereal female voice drifted across the cliffside to their ears. This was also the first time Nelson had seen any trace of magic in this era besides his own. A thin mist floated eerily from the small road, and when the soldiers holding spears noticed it, they actually trembled in terror. The spears in their hands fell uncontrollably to the ground, yet they seemed as though they had been struck by the Full Body-Bind Curse, their feet glued in place and unable to move. All they could do was let the mist brush toward them and skim lightly past their mouths and noses.
Then the soldiers collapsed limply to the ground.
"How interesting," Nelson said, drawing his Wand and staring at the mist. "Why would these people be so afraid of an envoy of the gods?"
A strong smell of sulfur seeped from the mist, mingled with the scent of ancient spices after burning, making people drowsy. Nelson raised his Wand. Just as Tom began chanting a spell to disperse the mist, it stopped in front of Nelson, thickening as it churned. Soon, a barefoot woman walked out of the fog. Her skin was so pale it was almost translucent, blue veins flickering in and out beneath it. Her high bridge of the nose and cheekbones, and her deep-black, wool-like curls, were no different from the Ancient Greeks on the peninsula at the time.
Her hands showed no trace of having ever labored, and her fair, slender feet seemed not to have done much walking either. So the moment they touched the ground, the soles were cut open by the broken stones on the road. Meager blood seeped out slowly, leaving bright-red footprints on the ground as she kept walking toward Nelson.
