Wands are the principal tools through which wizards direct magic, though a wizard's inherent ability remains the source of their strength. A wand may amplify spellwork, but it cannot replace the skill or power of its user. 145 418

Construction

Ollivander wands use one of three core materials: unicorn hair, phoenix tail feather, or dragon heartstring. Ollivander considers each core unique because no two magical creatures are exactly alike. 6

Ilvermorny wandmakers use a wider range of woods and magical-creature cores than the Ollivanders, believing that even rare materials can await their destined owners. 130

History

Wands were not always the universal instrument of wizarding magic. During Herpo the Foul's era, they had not yet become widespread, while ancient Northern European wizards cultivated magical trees and used their branches as personal casting mediums upon reaching adulthood. 654 398

In North America, wizards originally practiced without wands until Isolt's family arrived. Ilvermorny later became the primary source of wands on the continent; its headmasters are expected to be accomplished wandmakers and personally provide wands to students. 129 130

Ollivander's wand shop identifies itself as a maker of fine wands since 382 BC. Its workshop contains thousands of boxed wands, each awaiting a compatible wizard. 5
