History
Hogwarts was founded during an era when witch-hunting threatened magical families and Britain had no institution dedicated to protecting young wizards, particularly Muggle-born children. The school’s founding overlapped with the early Dementor crisis; together, these events helped lay the groundwork for the later Ministry of Magic. 149 440
The Four Founders eventually divided over their ideals. Helga Hufflepuff attempted to mediate, but the conflict was never fully resolved. 149
A hidden Chamber of Secrets lies deeper than Hogwarts’ deepest dungeon. During an earlier crisis, an enemy once shared by the Founders awoke beneath the castle through a creature Salazar Slytherin had left to protect it. Peeves confronted and eliminated the threat alone, then disappeared for decades. 97 253

Magical Nature
Castle Authority and Protection
Hogwarts grants its headmaster most of the authority to control the castle. It also protects the students and ghosts who reside within it. 253

- Salazar Slytherin’s portrait states that objects originating from Hogwarts can become exceptionally effective when used inside the castle; Nelson’s dagger cleanly sliced through Dumbledore’s protected antique desk. 305
Hogwarts’ Sleeping Dragon
During the dispute over Hogwarts’ Triwizard Champion, the school’s “Sleeping Dragon” responded to Dumbledore’s gesture by rising, roaring, and releasing a column of crimson dragon breath toward Tom Riddle. 266
Hidden Defenses
- The Chamber of Secrets contains the Basilisk, a longstanding threat connected to Hogwarts’ founding history. 166 295
- Tom Riddle and Nelson defeated the Basilisk in the Chamber, with Dumbledore later accepting responsibility for allowing the action against a creature that endangered students. 166 295

Relationships
