Background / History

Slytherin was one of Hogwarts’ four founders. Hogwarts Castle had originally belonged to his family, and he and the other founders established the school to give endangered young witches and wizards a place to live and learn. He later described founding a school as incompatible with simply preserving magical privilege for his own family. 97 336 511

His relationship with the other founders fractured over the admission of Muggle-born students. Historical accounts state that a Muggle-born student’s cooperation with the contemporary Muggle church in an attack on young wizards turned Slytherin’s distrust into hatred; the conflict ultimately contributed to the creation of the Sorting Hat and his departure from Hogwarts. 149 However, Slytherin later tells Tom that Hogwarts had been founded to protect and educate all young wizards, including Muggle-borns. 336

Before leaving, he concealed the Chamber of Secrets beneath Hogwarts and filled it with his magical legacy. The Chamber’s entrance was designed to leave its mark on the nearest iron object if covered, ensuring it could still be found even after later renovations. 336

During the Dementor wars, Slytherin investigated the magical inscriptions on a mysterious coffin, helped bring it to Hogwarts, and developed the Word Spirit Art from the Patronus Charm to harm Dementors. He also persuaded Binns to become a ghost and hide the coffin in Limbo. 518 714

A millennium later, Dumbledore recovered Slytherin’s portrait from storage and installed it in the headmaster’s office. Slytherin was pleased to learn that Hogwarts now educated all eleven-year-old magical children in Britain and regarded the school’s growth as surpassing the founders’ original achievement. 299

Despite his severe historical image, he is approachable with those who engage him directly. He accepts practical changes to Hogwarts, takes pleasure in being called “Professor,” and treats teaching as a continuation of his unfinished purpose. 336 His concern for Nelson’s dangerous magical accumulation and his willingness to aid Hogwarts in its final crisis show that his loyalty to the school endures. 336 711
