Background

Bai Suzhen was originally a white snake of Qingcheng Mountain. She gained spiritual intelligence beneath the moonlight, cultivated until she could assume human form, and later found a cultivation method in a temple dedicated to Lishan Laomu. Though she initially regarded Lishan Laomu as her master only in her own heart, she followed a righteous cultivation path for roughly eighteen hundred years. 1686 1673

Before coming to Hangzhou, Bai Suzhen had already faced threats from other cultivators and demons. Three centuries earlier, she defeated and humiliated the lecherous toad spirit Wang Daoling after he harassed her and Xiao Qing. She and Xiao Qing also once fled from the Golden Cymbals Dharma King, a powerful centipede demon and the natural enemy of snakes. 1671 1695

She arrives in Hangzhou while facing a Love Tribulation. Her repeated encounters with Jiang Hao, living under the name Xu Xian, lead her to fall in love despite her fears about the consequences of emotional attachment. 1655 1656 1670

Appearance

In human form, Bai Suzhen is a graceful woman usually dressed in white. Her appearance and bearing are repeatedly compared to those of a celestial being, while her residence and surroundings reflect her refined taste. 1654 1656 1704

  • Snow-white true snake form with no venom. 1656
  • Elegant white clothing and a poised, gentle manner. 1654 1658
  • Often wears her Jasper Hairpin, which doubles as a Spirit Artifact. 1686
  • Possesses a soft, floating gait that Jiang Hao compares to an opera performer’s movements. 1670

Personality

Bai Suzhen is gentle, intelligent, and deeply devoted to those she loves. Her Love Tribulation initially makes her cautious of Jiang Hao, but she gradually accepts her feelings and becomes unwaveringly loyal to him. She values their peaceful life in Hangzhou more than the detached immortality traditionally expected of cultivators. 1655 1670 1706

She is also protective and decisive when others threaten her family. Wang Daoling’s threat against Jiang Hao provokes her killing intent, while the return of the Golden Cymbals Dharma King leaves her willing to risk her own life rather than endanger her husband. 1671 1699

As a physician, Bai Suzhen is compassionate toward ordinary people. She treats patients affordably, helps Baohe Hall earn the trust of Hangzhou residents, and becomes especially respected for her midwifery, with every mother under her care delivering safely. 1675 1695 1706

Abilities & Skills

Demon Cultivation

Bai Suzhen possesses approximately eighteen hundred years of cultivation and considerable magical power. Her cultivation supports transformation, flight, spellcasting, artifact use, and combat against other demons. 1673 1686

  • Can transform between human and snow-white snake forms. 1656
  • Uses Cloud-Ascending Art to travel through the air. 1686

  • Covers the victim in stone-like skin while leaving their consciousness intact. 1656
  • Can last for up to twelve hours, though Bai Suzhen may end it early. 1656
  • Its duration is greatly reduced against stronger opponents, but even a brief immobilization can create an opening for a decisive strike. 1656
  • Wang Daoling fears the technique enough to immediately escape underground when she attempts to use it. 1671

Taoist Arts and Sword Control

After marrying Jiang Hao, Bai Suzhen receives instruction in the Heavenly Escape Swordplay and other Taoist methods. Her high comprehension and existing magical power allow her to make rapid progress. 1686 1687
