Nature and Cultivation

Ki is described as part of nature and as the foundation of all things, encompassing both spiritual and physical aspects. Its cultivation can nourish the body and develop latent potential. 46

Earth’s martial artists generally possess little Ki and generate it slowly, requiring decades of persistent training to develop it. This limitation drives them to study and use every portion of their energy precisely. 6 451

Saiyans and many other cosmic races possess immense innate power, but commonly treat Ki as mere energy; their attacks and applications are therefore comparatively crude. 6 Xiaya seeks to correct this weakness by establishing refined Ki control as the foundation of his growth. 6 46

Consciousness Training

Consciousness training developed from Ki cultivation but focuses more heavily on spirit, awareness, and combat instinct than on bodily energy refinement. It can improve energy control, combat experience, special techniques, and the ability to transcend physical limits. 76

Uses

Energy Sensing

Ki allows martial artists to locate and evaluate living beings through their auras.

• Chaya senses surrounding auras while searching the forests near Mount Paozu. 66
• He detects tens of thousands of weak Fidayan signatures, several hundred combatants above 1,000 battle power, and a distant abnormal aura on Planet Fidaya. 48
• Ki sensing can identify a target’s general strength, though direct experience may still be needed to judge their full power. 14

Suppression and Concealment

A fighter may restrain their Ki to avoid detection or reduce the pressure exerted on others.

• Chaya and Selyne’s unsuppressed Ki is sensed immediately by Korin and Kami, whose much lower battle powers leave them overwhelmed. 14
• Xiaya conceals his presence while walking through Planet Red Mountain’s cities. 174
• Unrestrained Super Saiyan Ki is described as a conspicuous “spotlight,” openly revealing the user’s location to enemies. 355

Combat Techniques

Ki can be shaped into offensive, defensive, and movement-based techniques.

• Ki blasts and waves — Condensed energy projectiles used against enemies, including Chaya’s attacks on native beasts and Gohan’s Kamehameha. 48 287
• Kamehameha — A concentrated wave of Ki released from the hands; Son Goku uses one powerful enough to extinguish the flames covering Mount Frypan. 304
• Kikoho — A high-penetration, high-explosive technique formed by concentrating Ki in the hands; Xiaya’s use against Broly consumes more than half of his remaining energy. 401
• Ki barriers — Crystalline energy defenses manifested around the body during clashes between powerful fighters. 465

Power Burst

By charging or bursting Ki, a fighter can temporarily release strength far beyond their normal combat power.

• Power bursts can allow weaker combatants to overcome stronger opponents at critical moments. 149
• Bofei’s crude power burst greatly raises his combat power, though it represents only a superficial application of Ki developed through centuries of experience. 149
• Kaio-ken is an advanced example of amplifying Ki: Son Goku and Tien Shinhan sharply raise their combat power by multiplying their output. 446 447 455

Limitations

• Ki-based techniques consume energy; prolonged combat and high-output attacks can leave even transformed fighters unable to maintain their forms. 208 401
• Greater innate power does not guarantee refined Ki control. Saiyans’ natural strength can hinder their mastery of efficient applications. 6
• Mortal Ki sensing cannot detect battles conducted at sufficiently high divine levels; Xiaya and Kusu’s clash produces visible environmental effects while remaining entirely imperceptible through Ki. 701
• Super Saiyan God possesses no detectable Ki, instead manifesting a divine aura. 761
