Background & History

Piccolo initially trains alone at Cloud Sea Highland, pursuing strength and Earth’s conquest. When Krillin challenges him, Piccolo dismisses him as insignificant, but is overwhelmed and left severely injured. Krillin spares him and tells him not to make surpassing Goku his sole purpose. 10

Kami’s return to Earth intensifies Piccolo’s jealousy and fear because their lives remain connected. He trains harder and devises a plan to use Goku’s son, Gohan, against Goku; after kidnapping the child, however, Gohan’s unexpected power and innocence disrupt Piccolo’s intentions. 102

Piccolo considers killing Gohan to eliminate a future rival, but hesitates when the child calls him “Uncle Piccolo.” Rather than creating a demon warrior, he begins training Gohan—initially intending to send him home after a month, then repeatedly extending the training. 107 108
