Background / History

Gohan is the son of Goku and Chi-Chi. At two years old, he lives at Mount Paozu as a sheltered child who misses his father, fears unfamiliar places, and has not yet begun formal martial-arts training 102 103.

Piccolo abducts Gohan intending to turn him into a demon warrior. Gohan's unexpected power, innocence, and eventual habit of calling him “Uncle Piccolo” cause Piccolo to abandon the idea of killing or brainwashing him and instead become his reluctant mentor 102 107. Alone in the wilderness, Gohan learns to forage, fish with his tail, make fire, cross a swamp, and defend himself against a wolf with an instinctive ki blast 105 106 108.

After half a year, Gohan returns home more independent and noticeably stronger, though he later chooses to resume training with Piccolo.
