Origin and Distribution

• Human negative emotions produce Cursed Energy. Energy that leaks from people can accumulate and form Cursed Spirits 9 451.
• Nearly every living creature has some Cursed Energy; even animals possess faint traces. Toji Fushiguro is an exception, with none at all 100 102.
• Tengen's Barrier retains Cursed Energy within the Island Nation, including energy drifting in from outside. Its concentration contributes to the country's high frequency of Cursed Spirits and Jujutsu Sorcerers 102.
• Overseas, Cursed Energy is generally sparser and can disperse before it becomes concentrated enough to form Cursed Spirits 101 102.

Properties and Applications

Cursed Spirits and Techniques

• Imaginary Cursed Spirits form from imagination imbued with negative emotions such as fear and resentment. Cursed Energy left in a sorcerer's body can also contribute to their transformation into a Cursed Spirit after death 9 189.
• Sorcerers expend and control Cursed Energy to use techniques. Output, reserves, and efficiency differ: Ryu Ishigori fires powerful Cursed Energy blasts, while Satoru Gojo's Six Eyes allow exceptionally precise, efficient control 151 188.
• Some cursed tools contain their own Cursed Energy and Techniques; others carry energy infused by their user 7.

Positive Energy

• Combining two flows of negative Cursed Energy can produce Positive Energy, which is used in Reverse Cursed Technique to heal wounds 23 99.
• Positive Energy is dangerous to Cursed Spirits. Mahoraga's Demon-Slaying Sword carries it, and Eiji later uses a Positive Energy impact against two attacking spirits 3 467.

Binding Vows and System Recognition

• The Cursed Energy system enforces Binding Vows: officials who violate their vows are punished by it 477.
• In a Shikigami Taming Ritual, the system recognizes the tamer's own Cursed Energy. Defeating Mahoraga with Toji's cursed tools would therefore not count as Eiji's success 12.
• Because Toji has no Cursed Energy, Eiji uses his intervention to disrupt the system's karmic connection between Riko Amanai and Tengen. Moving Riko overseas weakens that connection further 101 102.

Research and Later Uses

• The Old Professor describes Cursed Energy as “idealistic.” His laboratory finds that a Cursed Spirit's understanding affects how it interacts with its surroundings, though that effect has limits 15.
• By studying remnants left when Cursed Spirits disperse, the laboratory develops an electromagnetic method that kills a Grade 4 spirit without using Cursed Energy 15.
• During the Sendai battle, Medea uses the Holy Grail to collect and convert residual Cursed Energy from exorcised spirits, supplying Eiji and several Heroic Spirits 168 188.
• Eiji later connects devices that absorb scattered Cursed Energy from nearby cities to a Jogo-based cursed tool for power generation. He also expands Empty Barriers to gather energy from neighboring countries 478.
