Background

Sun Wukong emerged when an immortal stone on Flower-Fruit Mountain split apart, releasing a stone egg that became a golden-furred monkey. His first breath enriched the mountain’s spiritual energy, while his roar shook the surrounding forests and scattered birds and beasts. He was quickly accepted by the local monkey troop. 272

After passing through the waterfall at the mountain stream and discovering Water Curtain Cave, he led the troop into its natural stone dwelling. The monkeys elected him their king and named him the Handsome Monkey King. He ruled carefree until the death of the old monkey who had first welcomed him made him fear mortality. Determined to find eternal life for himself and his subjects, he crossed the sea on a self-made raft to seek an immortal path. 272

Xuan Wazi and Nuwa eventually appeared before him. Xuan Wazi accepted him as a disciple, taught him cultivation, gave him the World Dao Method and Primordial Unity Staff, and revealed the future role he was expected to perform in the Journey to the West. Wukong agreed to enact the script while secretly retaining strength far beyond what Heaven and the Buddhist Sect believed he possessed. 272

Wukong is proud, boisterous, and deeply attached to freedom. When shown the future of his confinement and forced Buddhahood, his immediate concern was avoiding subjugation; he accepted the plan only after learning that he would be acting under his master’s direction rather than serving as another faction’s pawn. 272

He combines impulsive mischief with deliberate calculation. During the scripture pilgrimage, he repeatedly stages difficult battles, slow rescues, and apparent defeats to make the journey’s tribulations look convincing. He is nonetheless protective of Tang Monk and his fellow disciples, and he can choose humiliation and reform over killing when confronting wrongdoers. 283 292 293

His loyalty to Xuan Wazi remains central to his character. Long after his master’s departure, Wukong personally honors him with offerings and admits that he misses him. 318

Heavenly Court Rebellion

Following Xuan Wazi’s instructions, Wukong accepted Heaven’s invitation, briefly served as Horse Supervisor, rebelled after learning the position was menial, and proclaimed himself the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. He defeated Heavenly Court forces, consumed the Peach Garden’s fruit, imperial wine, and Laozi’s elixirs, and escaped the Eight Trigrams Furnace with strengthened eyes and body. 273

He deliberately allowed Tathagata to suppress him under Five Elements Mountain, treating the five-hundred-year imprisonment as an opportunity for secluded cultivation and inner-world development. 273

Journey to the West

Xuanzang removed the mountain’s talisman and accepted Wukong as his first disciple. Wukong led the journey west, fought demons, helped recruit Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing, and protected Tang Monk throughout the pilgrimage. 279 280 281

Much of the journey was a coordinated performance. Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing intentionally prolonged demon encounters and rescues so the tribulations would appear arduous and increase the value of the scriptures. Tang Monk eventually revealed that he had understood the scheme all along. 283 284 293

Spirit Mountain Conflict

At Spirit Mountain, Wukong secretly replaced part of the retrieved scriptures with the Mahayana Buddhist Sutras provided by the Holy Father. He and his brothers also removed treasures from the Buddhist treasury. 297 298

When Jieyin and Zhunti confronted him at Flower-Fruit Mountain, Wukong released his concealed Late-stage Primordial Grand Unity Golden Immortal cultivation. Alongside Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing, he defeated the Western Sages and helped destroy Spirit Mountain’s Buddhist forces, compelling Tathagata to withdraw the Buddhist Sect from the Eastern Lands. 299

Life after the Pilgrimage

Wukong returned to Flower-Fruit Mountain, distributed magical treasures among his monkeys, improved the mountain’s fruit trees with Merit Holy Water, and settled into life as its king. 297 298 300
