Background / History

Nuwa initially served as an arbiter of marriage. When Xi He and Chang Xi sought her help after Di Jun's alleged misconduct, she believed their sworn account, refused to officiate the Heavenly Marriage, and returned the betrothal gifts. Her decision upheld the sisters' freedom to reject a coercive union. 36

After sensing that her path to enlightenment lay in creation, Nuwa repeatedly attempted to animate clay figures made from Essence of Wutu. Though she could shape bodies, she could not give them true life. Xuan Wazi suggested using the Innate Dao Body as a foundation and finding a more suitable creation material, causing her to enter enlightenment. 40 41

Using Nine Heavens Breathing Soil, Three Lights Divine Water, and her own origin of creation, Nuwa created the Human Race. She first formed three thousand Innate Humans, then one hundred twenty-nine thousand six hundred Postnatal Humans. The resulting merit enabled her to attain Hunyuan independently of the Heavenly Dao, and humanity recognized her as its Holy Mother. 42

When Mount Buzhou's collapse and the Heavenly River threatened the Primordial Era, Nuwa set aside her grief over Fuxi's fall to collect the Five Elements essences and mend the heavens. Her suspicion of Xuan Wazi and confrontation with Houtu nearly escalated into conflict, but the two later became sworn sisters. With the Saints' aid, Nuwa refined the Five-Colored Stone and helped restore the world. 123 127 131 134 135

Following the calamity, Nuwa refined the Purple Green Gourd into the Monster Summoning Banner, taking responsibility for restoring order among the scattered demon race. 142
