History

Origins and Founding

At the future site of Konoha, Hashirama describes a village where clans can coexist and children no longer have to fight. Madara supports the dream, and Kyosuke offers to help build it. Their plans initially collide with the older generation’s hostility: Tajima condemns Madara’s meetings with Hashirama and threatens Kyosuke over his involvement 36.

Kyosuke later presents a hidden village proposal to clan representatives. He describes a refuge against foreign invasion and internal warfare, supported by an Academy, better medical techniques, and a Military Police Force. The Sarutobi representative questions how rival clans would share authority, but Kyosuke leaves that issue unresolved while the Uchiha–Senju conflict continues 143.

After Kyosuke’s overwhelming victory over the Senju-led forces, the Uchiha and Senju end their feud and agree to found the village. Residents throughout the Land of Fire are invited to join, including former enemies willing to abandon revenge. Housing, work, and education are offered to those who contribute to construction 192.

Settlement and Political Consolidation

Rapid migration makes food and housing immediate priorities. Hashirama creates homes and accelerates crop growth, while Chō alters the houses to meet residents’ needs. Uchiha welcoming parties led by Maya build goodwill; Tobirama organizes competing Senju hospitality efforts 192.

New clans bring both manpower and political rivalries. Tobirama recruits allies to reduce Uchiha dominance, while Kyosuke brings in the Fūma. At a leadership meeting, Kyosuke proposes the name Konoha, the title Hokage, the leaf emblem, and the green vest. All are approved 194 197 198.

Yayoi becomes the fourth senior elder after a staged exhibition match with Hashirama strengthens her public reputation. Tobirama expects her to counterbalance the Uchiha, unaware that she has long supported Kyosuke 204 205.

First Hokage and Early Dominance

Konoha operates for two years without a Hokage. When the leaders finally vote, Madara and Yayoi nominate Kyosuke, Kyosuke abstains, and Hashirama supplies the deciding nomination. The assembled leaders approve Kyosuke as First Hokage, followed by a public inauguration attended by tens of thousands 220 221.

Under Kyosuke, Konoha formalizes ninja ranks and expands access to training. Its victory over Kumogakure in Year Three brings substantial reparations and discourages Iwagakure from entering the conflict. By Year Six, rival villages recognize the Academy and points system as major sources of Konoha’s strength 223 232 240.

Isshiki’s Attack and Succession

Ōtsutsuki Isshiki interrupts the joint Chunin Exams, declaring his intent to seize the Nine-Tails, kill the Hokage, and eliminate Six Paths. Kyosuke orders the highest alert and evacuation. Isshiki kills Senju Toka and several police officers, then defeats Tobirama and Izuna despite their cooperation 247.

The battle’s aftermath leaves Kyosuke recorded as dead, Madara absent, and Hashirama severely weakened. Other villages question Konoha’s account of the Ōtsutsuki and interpret these losses as an opportunity. Tobirama attempts to secure the Second Hokage position, but Yuto’s victory over him damages that bid; Yayoi succeeds as Second Hokage late in Year Eight 252 253.

At the first Five Kage Summit, Yayoi refuses Sunagakure’s territorial demands. She, Yuto, and Chō overpower or deter the other Kage, restoring Konoha’s reputation and demonstrating that its strength extends beyond the original Three Gods 254.

Ninshū and the First Shinobi World War

Ninshū attempts to impose its unification agenda on Konoha. Its visit becomes violent when Kanami attacks Uchiha shinobi and injures Nagisa. Yayoi rejects Mi Gujie’s authority, while Hashirama declares that anyone interfering with Konoha is his enemy. After negotiations collapse, Yayoi orders warrants and a public campaign against Ninshū 257 258.

Ninshū subsequently supports Cloud and Sand, while Kirigakure attacks the Land of Whirlpools. Konoha fights across three fronts, securing Iwagakure’s neutrality through assistance with its Academy and incentive system. Amegakure also sides with Konoha 259 260 262.

Scientific Ninja Tools reverse the war’s course. Sunagakure surrenders in Year 14, Kumogakure signs reparations terms in February, and Kirigakure surrenders in April. Konoha emerges victorious after two years of war against three major villages 263.

Third Hokage and the Senju Crisis

By Year 24, Konoha has become the Land of Fire’s largest city. Yayoi decides to relinquish the Hokage position, and Kyosuke returns after years of absence. Yuto is subsequently inaugurated as Third Hokage 264 271 287.

Senju resentment intensifies under the Uchiha–Hyuga alliance. Tobirama recruits Hiruzen and Danzō for a rebellion, interpreting Nawaki’s growing Wood Release strength as an advantage. Nawaki, however, has been covertly influenced by Yayoi, Chō, and an infiltrator to prioritize Konoha over his clan 277 295 296.

On the night of the planned uprising, Nawaki attacks the Senju compound himself, declaring that no one may endanger Konoha’s peace. Izuna confronts Tobirama as the crisis becomes a renewed clash between their longstanding rivals 296.

Unification and Cosmic Expansion

After Ōtsutsuki Kishiki defects, Konoha prepares for a larger extraterrestrial invasion by conquering the Four Great Nations. Complete unification gives it a secure rear and a shared resource base. Ten-Tails cloning and artificial Chakra Fruits then support an expanding force of Six Paths and divine-flame fighters 315.

Konoha defeats seven invading apostles and later takes the war to the Ōtsutsuki. Its final offensive culminates in Kyosuke, Madara, and Hashirama combining their power into the Finality Great Buddha. After a battle spanning 1,281 timelines, they kill the ancient Ōtsutsuki leader 315.

Governing Bodies

  • Highest governing body: Initially comprises Kyosuke, Madara, and Hashirama; Yayoi is formally appointed fourth elder at the second leadership meeting 205.
  • Clan leadership meetings: Representatives negotiate village policy and contribute money or labor. Major decisions remain concentrated around the strongest leaders 198 200.
  • Hokage selection procedure: Hashirama proposes a vote among the four senior leaders, followed by a village-wide election if they cannot agree. Kyosuke’s selection is resolved at the leadership level 220 221.
  • Factional politics: The Uchiha–Hyuga alliance repeatedly frustrates Senju efforts to regain control. Recruitment, mentorship, police authority, and public opinion all become instruments of political competition 197 220 253 275.

Institutions and Services

Ninja Academy

  • Purpose: Provides children from different clans with shared access to knowledge and ninjutsu 143.
  • Teaching staff: Includes experienced jonin instructors and volunteer clan elders 232.
  • Graduation policy: Kyosuke initially prohibits early graduation to preserve students’ fundamentals, including those of his own son 232.
  • Ninja Interns: Students who complete four years of study may receive temporary shinobi status after assessment. Jonin can select them for teams, easing the mission backlog 232.
  • Military output: By Year 11, the Academy has supplied over 10,000 genin; that year’s graduating class exceeds 1,500 260.

Ninja Ranking System

Rank Requirements and privileges
Genin Awarded to Academy graduates alongside a Konoha forehead protector 223.
Chunin Requires sufficient completed missions and success in the Chunin Exams 223.
Jonin Requires specified mission experience and assessment by leadership-appointed examiners; permits broader mission access and service as a team instructor 223.
Elite Jonin Requires endorsement by a senior official; qualifying fighters are considered core village personnel 223.
Super Kage A strength classification for fighters capable of handling multiple Kage-level opponents, rather than a routine graduation rank 223.

Points and Rewards

  • Points can be exchanged for money, secret techniques, and even a suitable spouse 232.
  • Widely available ninjutsu and regulated rewards allow common-born ninja to advance beyond the restrictions of clan-controlled knowledge 240.
  • Other villages eventually seek to imitate the model, although powerful clan interests make full adoption difficult 244 262.

Security

  • Police Department: Proposed to prevent crime and protect civilians; Tobirama later receives responsibility for maintaining village order 143 216.
  • Accountability: In Year Five, Kyosuke arrests officers accused of mistreating an elderly vendor and detains people spreading inflammatory claims, including an Iwagakure spy 232.
  • Anbu: Chō serves as its first commander and confronts Ninshū during the village crisis 257.
  • Visitor registration: Visiting exam contestants must register at the gate. Refusal can result in expulsion, arrest, or lethal enforcement 243.

Chunin Exams

  • Kyosuke proposes joint exams to showcase Konoha’s successors and attract mission commissions 233.
  • The written test is canceled because the other villages have not yet established Academies 244.
  • Capture the Flag replaces the rejected Forest of Death format, testing scouting, concealment, force allocation, and coordinated attacks under outside supervision 244.

Infrastructure and Economy

  • Initial construction: Hashirama supplies houses and crops, while Chō customizes homes through her ocular ability 192.
  • Urban planning: Kyosuke proposes core, inner, and outer districts, with differentiated housing intended to encourage economic advancement 193.
  • Development financing: Proposed measures include village-backed mortgages, merchant assistance, trade routes, new clan contributions, daimyo support, and sales of tailed beasts 193 200.
  • Daimyo cooperation: Kyosuke rejects Madara’s proposal to seize the Land of Fire outright, arguing that Konoha lacks sufficient personnel to govern it. He instead offers military protection in exchange for support 193 200.
  • Mission capacity: Demand initially exceeds the available workforce. Kyosuke secretly supplements missions with disguised shadow clones before the Ninja Intern program restores normal operation near the end of Year Four 232.
  • Population growth: Migration and childbirth incentives drive expansion. By Year 24, the city has hundreds of thousands of permanent residents and an estimated daily flow exceeding one million people 260 271.
  • Economic warfare: Yuto inherits a covert economic network that assists Konoha in sanctioning the Land of Wind and Land of Lightning 253.

Military Technology

Scientific Ninja Tools

  • Developed by Yayoi in a secret laboratory beneath the Hyuga compound, supported by hundreds of shadow clones 262.
  • Chakra-capacitor devices release ninjutsu stored in scrolls without hand seals 262.
  • Stored techniques include Chidori, Bringer of Darkness, Fireball Jutsu, Water Dragon Bullet, and Hashirama’s Wood Release 262.
  • Scroll supplies require replenishment; Konoha pauses one offensive to restock its genin before renewing the attack 263.
  • Their battlefield debut allows new graduates to surprise and defeat more experienced opponents, including jonin 263.

Biotechnology

  • Diluted sage cells enable externally assisted Sharingan awakening for Uchiha members who reach ten years of age 253.
  • Lunar Ōtsutsuki chakra raises Hyuga potential, with exceptional members capable of developing toward the Tenseigan 253.
  • Refined Ten-Tails cloning eventually supplies Super Kage fighters with a route to Six Paths power 315.
  • Artificial Chakra Fruits sustain further military growth during Konoha’s cosmic era 315.

Geography and Landmarks

  • Land of Whirlpools: Serves as a maritime warning barrier against forces approaching from the Land of Water. Konoha repeatedly defends it against Kirigakure 60 260 262.
  • Land of Rivers: A neutral buffer between the Land of Fire and Sunagakure. Yayoi refuses Reto’s attempt to place it under Sand’s control 254.
  • Konoha Forest: Preserved during district planning for future exams and outdoor training simulations 210.
  • Hokage Rock: Overlooks the growing village; Kyosuke, Madara, and Hashirama survey construction from its future site 193.
  • Hokage Building: Houses the leadership and serves as the setting for Yuto’s public inauguration appearance 272 287.
  • Senju compound: Located in northeastern Konoha; later attacked during the Night of the Massacre 264 296.
  • Entrance statue: A separate monument to Kyosuke bears the inscription, “Where leaves dance, the fire burns on” 271.

Foreign Relations

  • Sunagakure — Economic sanctions worsen its financial crisis. Its territorial demands are rejected, and its subsequent war ends in defeat 253 254 263.
  • Kirigakure — Repeatedly attacks the Land of Whirlpools. Konoha’s counteroffensive kills the First Mizukage, and Mist ultimately surrenders 260 261 263.
  • Iwagakure — Seeks to study Konoha’s administration and remains neutral during the war in exchange for help establishing an Academy and incentive system 253 262.
  • Amegakure — Supports Konoha and threatens forces attempting to turn its territory into a battlefield 262.
  • Ninshū — Becomes hostile after Konoha rejects its authority; sponsors rival villages and targets fighters it considers too powerful to participate in conventional war 258 259 262.
  • Ōtsutsuki Kishiki — Defects to Konoha, supplying verified intelligence before its campaign of global unification 315.

Will of Fire

  • Konoha’s founding purpose is to shelter clans, keep young children off battlefields, and allow elders to live peacefully 143.
  • Kyosuke later plans Will of Fire classes for students and residents to establish shared civic values beyond clan identity 232.
  • The ideal remains contested: political factions invoke village stability while manipulating public opinion, exploiting police authority, and preparing violence against rival clans 220 275 296.

“My idea is to establish a safe haven that can shelter every Family.”
— Uchiha Kyosuke, presenting the village proposal 143
