Background / History

After surviving the destruction of Namek, Goku reached Planet Yardrat aboard a nearby Ginyu Force spacecraft. He spent the intervening period learning the planet's unusual techniques, including Instant Transmission, before returning to Earth shortly after Trunks defeated Frieza and King Cold. 314 320 322

When Trunks privately disclosed the impending Android threat, Goku accepted his warning and the medicine intended to treat a future heart disease. He then joined the other Z Fighters in three years of preparation. 321 322

Goku confronted Android No. 19 despite feeling the onset of his illness. Although he transformed into a Super Saiyan and initially pressed the attack, No. 19 absorbed his Kamehameha and his worsening heart disease left him unable to fly, use Ki effectively, or sustain his transformation. Vegeta ultimately rescued him. 325 326 327

Naruto later cured Goku with a special Senzu Bean and helped him reassess his fighting methods. Goku trained in Afterimage Fist under Naruto's guidance, then entered the Hyperbolic Time Chamber with Gohan to seek power beyond Super Saiyan. 338 340 341 347

At the Cell Games, Goku fought Cell directly but recognized that Cell was stronger. He surrendered, entrusted the battle to Gohan, and deliberately had Cell restored with a Senzu Bean so that Gohan's dormant power would emerge. 373 374 376

When Cell attempted to self-destruct and destroy Earth, Goku used Instant Transmission to take him away from the planet. The resulting explosion apparently killed Goku, King Kai, Bubbles, and Gregory. 378

Appearance

Goku is a Saiyan whose normal hair is black. As a Super Saiyan, his hair stands upright and turns gold, his pupils turn green, and a golden aura surrounds him. 320 325

  • Super Saiyan hair — golden and sharply raised. 325
  • Super Saiyan eyes — green pupils. 325
  • Aura — a powerful golden Ki aura capable of being sensed across great distances. 321 325

Personality

Goku is cheerful, straightforward, and often absent-minded in social situations. He reacts to Trunks' identity with curiosity rather than suspicion, and he is excited by the existence of another Super Saiyan and by unfamiliar techniques from Yardrat. 320 322

His greatest drive is self-improvement through combat. He seeks to surpass Super Saiyan, openly acknowledges when others are stronger, and eagerly studies Naruto's combat methods. 347 363 371

Although naturally inclined toward mercy, Goku becomes more severe after learning of the future disasters associated with Cell and the Androids. He ultimately places Earth's safety above his own life, first by trusting Gohan with Cell and then by teleporting Cell away before his self-destruction. 361 376 378

  • Fires the Kamehameha, though Android No. 19 can absorb the attack through the devices in his palms. 326
