Power Progression
Shadow develops through additional characters written into the Wordless Book rather than a named sequence of cultivation realms 32 86 412.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Initial manifestation | 15 | Creates an intangible figure that mimics Guan Tong’s actions; initially dissipates in less than five minutes. |
| Incorporation of external shadows | 17 | Contact allows Shadow to bring shadows cast by other objects under Guan Tong’s control. Their movement counts toward his marathon distance. |
| Solidification | 32 | Five days of inscription experiments produce a corporeal Shadow capable of interacting with the physical world. |
| Phasing | 40 | Enables switching between ethereal and solid states without permanently losing previously developed functions. |
| Shadow Armor | 61 | Shadow transforms around Guan Tong and solidifies into full-body armor. |
| Five Senses | 86 | Adds sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch, which materialized shadows can share with Guan Tong. |
| Long-distance materialization | 119 | Successfully solidifies a Shadow Line over ten kilometers long, establishing the basis for Shadow Logistics. |
| Increased resilience | 120 | Further reinforcement improves Shadow’s strength and resilience for transportation work. |
| Shadow Domain | 216 | The sixth-page “Domain” ability creates a shadow barrier that confines enemies and supports attacks throughout its interior. |
| Domain Mind Power absorption | 239 | By this chapter, trapped enemies continuously lose Mind Power within the domain. |
| Adaptive domain control | 259 | A dynamically controlled Shadow Domain prevents Lucifer from escaping. |
| Second-stage Ascension scaling | 412 415 | Guan Tong’s strengthened body improves Shadow’s linked physical characteristics; Shadow Domain also improves in expansion speed, range, and consumption. |
| Gaze absorption and Return Shadow Kill Array | 415 | Eye-shaped constructs accelerate Mind Power absorption through eye contact. Retracting the domain produces a sweeping attack of sharp shadows. |
Appearance
- Humanoid manifestation: Initially appears as a shadowy figure; later can imitate the silhouettes of other people 15 421.
- Shadow Armor: Pure black armor covering Guan Tong’s entire body, with a shape that changes according to his thoughts 61 285.
- Transformed constructs: Can become blades, spikes, hands, eyes, hair-thin lines, and multiple connected figures 79 86 113 140 216.
- Human disguise: Can wear clothing and reshape its head into a helmet to conceal its nonhuman appearance 113.
Abilities & Skills
Manifestation and Shadow Control
Guan Tong manifests Shadow by pouring Mind Power into the Wordless Book and controls its actions mentally 17.
- Can incorporate an existing shadow after making contact with it, including the shadow of a building or a treadmill belt 17.
- Can divide into numerous branches and constructs, but these remain connected to the main Shadow through Shadow Lines 216 383.
- Cannot exist independently: a branch attached to someone cannot accompany that person through teleportation if the connection would be broken 383.
- Materialized Shadow’s strength and speed are linked to Guan Tong’s own physical capabilities 35 113 412.
Solidification and Phasing
Shadow can alternate between a non-corporeal state, called Phasing, and a corporeal state, called Solidifying 40.
- Can enter a locked room while intangible, then materialize inside to open it 40.
- Enables concealed approaches and surprise attacks from behind an enemy 40.
- Can enter an unsuspecting target’s body and materialize internally, producing an “implosion” attack 79.
- Retains its developed abilities when changing states 40.
- Is not guaranteed to penetrate Mind Power defenses; protective barriers can block infiltration 274 281.
Transformation and Offensive Constructs
Shadow can reshape into weapons, restraints, and multiple attacking forms 113 140 216 421.
- Shadow Blades: Extend from a humanoid Shadow’s wrists for close-range attacks 113.
- Shadow Thorns and Spears: Pierce targets from multiple directions, including from the ground 216 272 292.
- Shadow Hands: Block attacks, seize limbs, or carry Guan Tong 140 412.
- Multiple combat constructs: Can form numerous attackers linked to the main Shadow 216.
- Repeated attacks can exhaust the Mind Power needed to sustain an opponent’s defensive items, even when those items initially block Shadow 274.
Shadow Armor
Shadow wraps around Guan Tong and solidifies into armor, protecting him from attacks that cannot penetrate it 61.
- Can be maintained as long as sufficient Mind Power remains available 61.
- Reforms as it is damaged; during the Earthquake Rule, it repeatedly disintegrates and regenerates under seismic impacts 207.
- Can be combined with the Multi-functional Protective Suit or a circulating Mind Power shield for layered defense 61 328.
- Does not provide automatic protection when inactive: an unexpected attack may strike before Guan Tong can activate it 167.
- Can conceal an empty Shadow after Guan Tong leaves the battlefield, making enemies believe they are still attacking his body 274.
Five Senses and Remote Reconnaissance
Materialized shadows can activate some or all of the five senses and transmit their observations to Guan Tong 86.
- Eye-shaped constructs provide remote surveillance and shared vision 86 421.
- Supports accurate attacks within smoke and observation of events away from Guan Tong’s body 86 113.
- Shared senses allow Guan Tong to use a computer even after losing his own sight during the Tenth Rule 176.
- Hair-thin tendrils can attempt to locate unseen targets through touch, although this fails to detect a Sound Hunter in the documented encounter 113.
- The senses have no inherent supernatural detection: they cannot visually identify something Guan Tong’s ordinary senses would also miss 153.
- Possessing the Five Senses does not allow Shadow to speak independently 113.
Resilience and Recovery
Shadow lacks a human body’s normal vulnerability to pain and fatigue, and can quickly recover from being cut apart if Guan Tong continues supplying Mind Power 35.
- Poison gas has no effect on it in the confrontation with Basong 162.
- A remote Shadow can take the place of Guan Tong’s body against attacks intended to injure a human internally 274.
- It is not truly indestructible: Guan Tong’s attempt to add “Indestructible” to the Wordless Book fails 86.
- Materialized Shadow can operate in space, but cosmic rays and planetary gravity impose significant restrictions 441.
Long-Distance Transportation
Guan Tong develops Shadow Logistics after successfully materializing a Shadow Line over ten kilometers long 119.
- Reinforces Shadow’s resilience before testing it for transportation work 120.
- Arranges its first order around transporting Anti-Speech Masks, charging a 10% transportation fee 120.
- Plans a concealed pickup route to a hospital in Lipu City 120.
Shadow Domain
Shadow Domain is a related Wordless Book ability rather than merely another inscription on Shadow’s first page 86 216 223.
- Covers the environment with shadow layers whose extent depends on the Mind Power spent 218.
- Provides comprehensive perception, target tracking, and long-range attacks throughout the enclosed area 218 223.
- Forms a barrier that confines enemies; Guan Tong also identifies its potential for protection without blind spots 216 223.
- Drains the Mind Power of trapped enemies 239 260.
- Later gains a compressed small-space attack and eye-shaped constructs that rapidly absorb Mind Power through eye contact 415.
- Return Shadow Kill Array: Retracts the domain toward Guan Tong’s right palm while sharp shadows cut through everything along their path 415.
- Some enemies call it “Shadow World”; Guan Tong suspects Lucifer spread that name 290.
Mind Power Costs and Limitations
| Mechanic | Documented cost or restriction |
|---|---|
| Early duration | At full Mind Power, the early Shadow lasts at most five minutes 17. |
| Solid–ethereal conversion | Each switch costs approximately 20 Mind Power at the time of testing 40. |
| Physical manifestation | Consumes approximately 1 Mind Power per second. With a cap of 126, Guan Tong can sustain it for a little over two minutes without reserves 65. |
| Size and distance | Larger transformed volumes consume more Mind Power. A long materialized line connecting armor and a distant weapon adds substantial expense 79. |
| Minimum line thickness | Guan Tong can reduce a Shadow Line to roughly hair thickness, but cannot make it thinner during this experiment 79. |
| Large-scale combat | Frequent phasing and extensive solidification consume tens of Mind Power per second during the Holy Grail battle 86. |
| Continuous reconnaissance | Small surveillance shadows cost less than a full humanoid manifestation, but still consume significant Mind Power over a day 380. |
| Domain deployment | One domain used against three assassins costs tens of thousands of Mind Power; 6,000 reserve points are insufficient for a large-scale deployment at that stage 239 228. |
| Enhancement ceiling | “Indestructible,” “Instant Movement,” and “Invisibility” fail to become functional inscriptions. Guan Tong attributes this to his insufficient Mind Power cap 86. |
- Reserve Mind Power supplies backup energy and extends Shadow’s sustained combat time; it is a separate Wordless Book ability 65 411.
- Phase Shift works alongside Shadow for relocation and escape, but is not established as an intrinsic function of Shadow 165 274.
- Advance knowledge makes Shadow’s internal-materialization ambush harder to execute; Guan Tong consequently prioritizes secrecy 79.
- Lucifer later prepares a light orb specifically to suppress Shadow’s diffusion 412.
- An unexpected barrier penetration is attributed to alien spore influence, not a new inscription. Guan Tong recalls his shadows and rejects the reinforcement because of its potential side effects 281.
Notable Uses
| Event | Shadow’s contribution |
|---|---|
| Extreme Marathon | Moving external shadows registers as Guan Tong’s own distance. A rotating cloud racket enables him to complete the 42-kilometer challenge in 21 seconds 17 18. |
| First battle | The solidified Shadow apprehends Shen Zuohu, confirming the practical value of Guan Tong’s development path 35. |
| Holy Grail defense | Shared vision, smoke, and extensive shadow constructs allow Guan Tong to eliminate approaching teams under the Infinite Mind Power buff 86. |
| Mingdao Mountain rescue | A remotely controlled, disguised Shadow kills supply thieves with wrist blades while Guan Tong observes from safety 113. |
| Yongzhou Base infiltration | Ethereal reconnaissance identifies the surveillance room and helps Guan Tong plan the suppression of the exploitative organization 139 140. |
| Earthquake Rule | Regenerating Shadow Armor shields Guan Tong from seismic impacts; shadow tendrils also rescue personnel falling into a fissure 203 207. |
| Wu Wang confrontation | Guan Tong leaves an armored Shadow decoy in battle while his real body moves away, defeating the premise of Wu Wang’s internal metal-powder attack 274. |
| Team combat | Shadow damages Heath’s Mind Power defensive item, creating an opening for Silver Fox to kill him 426. |
Trivia
- Guan Tong’s public nickname, “Shadow,” comes directly from the ability. He explicitly denies that the name has any additional meaning 443.
- His claim that “Shadow is a group” is deliberate misinformation intended to obscure his identity and explain appearances made through disguises or remote manifestations 140.
- During the attack following the Earthquake Rule, intended humanoid combat shadows become bizarre monsters because Guan Tong’s Mind Power is disordered—not because he deliberately develops a monster-summoning function 216 223.
- Guan Tong demonstrates shadow control to his teammates while continuing to conceal the Wordless Book itself 421.
