Background / History

Early Apocalypse

Before the Apocalypse Rules, Guan Tong was an ordinary high-school student at one of Yunhua’s top schools, with middling but respectable grades. During the June Snowfall rule, he left Yunhua alone for Mingdao Mountain, established a camp, and met Wang Yan and her daughter Chen Na there. He protected their group during the blizzard and killed a wild boar that threatened his supplies. 53 267 269

He developed as an independent Ascendant rather than joining a major organization. After winning Rule Two and receiving a Glory-tier Treasure Chest, he focused on maximizing Mind Power, gathering items, and developing the entity contained within his Wordless Book. 20 61

Rise of “Shadow”

Guan Tong first assisted the Public Security Bureau after Xu Xiaotian was kidnapped by a criminal organization. His Shadow subdued the gang leader Shen Zuohu, earning the respect and suspicion of Director Li Meng. 35

As Shadow, he built a reputation through solo combat, intelligence sales, and repeated confrontations with hostile Ascendants and organizations. He publicized information about Sound Hunters through Ascendant’s Home, helping ordinary people while greatly increasing the site’s influence. 114

Cooperation with Officials

During the Earth Dragon Turns Over rule, Guan Tong secretly cooperated with the authorities under the aliases Observer and Mutong. Using Mind Power transfer artifacts and his ability to crack Earth Vein Pillars, he helped mitigate escalating earthquakes. 197 198 199

His identity as Shadow was gradually confirmed during the rescue operations. He proposed a system for storing and transferring Ascendants’ Mind Power to rapidly destroy Earth Vein Pillars, though some officials feared concentrating such power in one individual. 203

Academy and Organization

Guan Tong served as Shi Jingyi’s replacement at the Mind Power Development Academy. After decisively defeating lecturer Zhang Linliang in a Mind Power Circulation spar, he was hired as an Acting Lecturer for six months. 222

His teaching emphasized direct experience, one-on-one guidance, and practical sparring. He later presented a theory that Mind Power is a “semi-idealistic” energy and proposed that humanity could potentially suppress the Apocalypse Rules by exceeding their Mind Power. 227 265

After leaving the Academy, Guan Tong began forming the Source Tracing Brigade to investigate the Fire Thief, Apocalypse Rules, Mind Power, and related mysteries. 298 444

Appearance

Guan Tong is a young, handsome man with a well-proportioned build rather than an imposing physique. He turned 20 during the Apocalypse Rules Era. 126 326

  • Frequently changes his outward appearance to conceal his identity, including posing as an old man, a middle-aged man, or a teenager. 132 199 201
  • Wears black Shadow Armor in combat, often reinforced by a Spirit Shield or other defensive equipment. 61 328
  • His Shadow Armor can emerge from his collar, cuffs, and pant legs before covering his body. 328

Personality

Guan Tong is quiet, self-reliant, and uncomfortable with excessive social interaction. He prefers acting on his own timetable, avoids dependence on organizations, and initially keeps his identity and location closely guarded. 64 235 326

He is highly pragmatic in combat and treats information as a decisive resource. He avoids fighting when it would compromise his objectives, but becomes ruthless toward kidnappers, assassins, exploitative organizations, and enemies who threaten people he considers important. 83 161 292

Despite his reserved demeanor, Guan Tong consistently protects those within his small circle. He aided Wang Yan and Chen Na during the June Snowfall, rescued Xu Xiaotian from kidnappers, sought treatment for Shi Jingyi, and repeatedly cooperated in disaster relief despite the danger to himself. 35 198 211 218

Abilities & Skills

Shadow Manipulation

Guan Tong’s primary combat power comes from the Shadow created through the Wordless Book. He can deform, solidify, split, and remotely control it for offense, defense, movement, surveillance, and restraint. 55 61 86

  • Can alter the Shadow’s phantom form without consuming Mind Power; solidification requires Mind Power. 61
  • Can form blades, thorns, ropes, barriers, tendrils, and large-scale armor. 142 161 207
  • Can infiltrate opponents with ethereal Shadow before solidifying it internally to inflict lethal damage. 161
  • Can give the Shadow sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch, then share its sensory input. 86
  • Can split his attention across numerous Shadow constructs, contributing to his exceptional multitasking ability. 227
  • Strong light can suppress the expansion of his Shadow Domain, though it does not eliminate all of his options. 386

Shadow Armor

Guan Tong can have his Shadow wrap around his body as solidified black armor.

  • Shields him from attacks that cannot penetrate the solidified Shadow. 61
  • Can be maintained as long as he has sufficient Mind Power. 61
  • Reforms while being damaged, though extreme forces such as high-level seismic waves consume substantial Mind Power to withstand. 207
  • Combines effectively with his Spirit Shield for layered defense. 328

Phase Shift

Guan Tong can shift his position through Shadows.

  • Can Phase Shift to a nearby Shadow to rapidly reach distant locations. 199
  • Can exchange positions with a Shadow to evade otherwise lethal attacks. 386
  • Forms part of an extremely dangerous close-range execution combination when paired with Small Space Devour. 327

Shadow Domain

By activating the sixth page of the Wordless Book, Guan Tong creates a shadow-covered domain.

  • Covers an area with layered Shadows based on the Mind Power invested. 218
  • Grants perception of everything within the Domain. 218
  • Lets Guan Tong reposition and launch long-range attacks throughout the affected area. 218
  • Was used to prevent Liu Wen’s surviving action-team members from escaping. 216

Mind Power Circulation and Spirit Shield

Guan Tong has advanced command of Mind Power Circulation, both as a combatant and instructor.

  • Forms a Spirit Shield that resists Mind Power attacks and intrusion. 199
  • Uses circulation to recover from internal injuries after excessive Mind Power output. 207
  • Can guide multiple students through circulation simultaneously. 227
  • Defeated an Academy lecturer through a forearm-based Mind Power Circulation spar. 222

Earth Vein Pillar Cracking

Guan Tong can convert Mind Power through the Wordless Book into “Cracking Power,” which damages Earth Vein Pillars and reduces earthquake severity.

  • Requires enormous Mind Power reserves or large-scale transfer from other Ascendants. 197 198
  • Successfully stopped a Level 7 earthquake with more than one million units of Mind Power, though he suffered internal injuries. 207
  • Helped weaken a Level 8 earthquake by 90%, though the pillar itself remained intact. 209

Killing Intent Perception

A passive Ability gained for placing third in the Sixteenth Apocalypse Rule.

  • Detects strong hostility and threats within a five-kilometer range. 390
  • Can identify the direction of concentrated killing intent. 439
  • Provides early warning against threats such as remotely launched attacks. 390

Scarlet Furnace

An ability obtained when Guan Tong’s Civilization Observer Title advanced.

  • Attacks targets at the level of consciousness rather than physical matter. 440
  • Was used to stimulate Allen’s consciousness in an attempt to awaken him. 444
  • Originated from absorbing the special life form known as the Howling Furnace. 440

Mental Stability Anchor

Guan Tong developed a seventh-page Wordless Book technique called “Anchor.”

  • Manifests as a totem on his right palm. 431 451
  • Reacts when he is targeted by mental attacks. 451
  • Was created to extend protection against mental threats beyond himself and toward allies. 431
