Background / History
Frieren's village was destroyed by demons, leaving her traumatized and consumed by a desire for revenge. Serie found her alive, healed her wounds, and offered to teach her the power to take revenge. 162
Serie initially trained Frieren through mana circulation and combat-oriented magic, encouraging her hatred as motivation. After Rhode returned from his reincarnation, he joined Frieren's education and introduced healing magic from the Sacred Codex to prevent her life from being defined solely by killing demons. 163 164
Under both teachers, Frieren developed rapidly. Serie eventually adjusted her methods, teaching technique and Holy Magic alongside destructive spells, while Rhode consistently encouraged Frieren to develop her own understanding of magic. 167 168
Frieren's first real battle came during the defense of White Castle. She successfully supported the dwarf defenders with homing Light Lances, but froze when a massive monster attacked at close range. Rhode saved her, while Serie harshly criticized her panic and failure to use the defensive options she had learned. 170 171
After reaching adulthood, Frieren departed with Aila to gain experience and investigate the disappearance of elf villages. Her journey brought her into direct conflict with demons targeting the elves, including Demon General Balzat. 200 212 218
Appearance
Frieren is a red-haired human mage who grows from a small child into a young woman during her apprenticeship. She is typically seen in mage robes and carries a staff forged for her by Rhode. 163 200 274
- Uses a dark brown traveling robe and short mage robe while adventuring. 200
- Carries a magic staff commissioned and forged by Rhode. 170 200
- Later works from a sparse personal research laboratory filled with magic books, notes, and calculations. 277
Personality
Frieren begins as a traumatized but exceptionally persistent child. Her family’s death leaves her with intense hatred for demons, and she initially sees magical strength as the sole means to avenge them. 162 163
Rhode's guidance broadens her perspective. Healing an injured fawn gives her a sense of fulfillment distinct from revenge, while battlefield experience teaches her that her magic can protect others rather than merely destroy enemies. 164 170
She is highly driven, curious, and willing to pursue difficult original research. She independently seeks to create magic that conceals magical fluctuations and a spell that can make flowers bloom anywhere. 212 237
Frieren can also become stubborn and obsessive. Her unrequited feelings for Rhode lead her to challenge Serie and pursue power through a dangerous sparring match, but Rhode's rejection eventually pushes her to redirect herself toward magic and personal growth. 244 246 248
