Background / History

Rhode was initially the only person known to be capable of creating magic. Unable to create offensive spells at first, he sought instruction from Serie; after failing to replicate her elven Light Magic conventionally, he manifested a powerful light attack of his own and knocked her unconscious. He subsequently invited Serie to travel with him after explaining his ability to create entirely new spells 2 3.

During their early travels, Rhode learned and adapted Serie's Light Magic, producing an Arrow Rain whose mana flow differed fundamentally from hers. He also created the mana-intensive Radar Technique by combining Detection and Warning Magic, then learned elven tracking magic for guiding released attacks in flight 5 7.

Rhode traveled alongside Serie, Som, Kraft, Norn, and Erik. He fought monsters, taught magic to humans, and demonstrated a destructive spell called Light Absorption and Explosion, which left a crater dozens of meters wide 19 35 36. Recognizing that magic knowledge needed to be preserved, he and Norn compiled the Codex of Origin, later known as the Origin Holy Scripture 41 213.

He proposed the creation of Ideal Nation Aer, the continent's first human kingdom, with Norn as king and Rhode and Serie serving as Great Sages. His stated goal was to gather scattered humans through protection and magical education 48. His teachings and magical system later became the basis of human magical civilization 213.

During the war against divine and demonic threats, Rhode created False Divine Strike with Serie after learning Divine Strike Magic from Olivia. He imposed conditions limiting its use to demons and world-ending crises to prevent abuse 99. He also secretly accumulated faith power through magic circles placed in the Elf Kingdom, intending to use it through the Light of Ayr against the Goddess of Fertility 125.

After defeating the Goddess of Fertility, Rhode was corrupted and discarded his contaminated body. He survived by reincarnating into a new body, spending thirty years harmonizing his soul with it; the process initially left him extremely frail 110 118. He later used the Light of Ayr's faith power to suppress the remaining corruption, recovered part of his former strength, and reunited with Serie after she searched for him in the Land of Fallen Gods 113 114 118.

A millennium after the creation of the Origin Holy Scripture, Rhode found it preserved as a foundational work of human magic. Though later generations worshipped him as a god-like figure, he valued the spread and continued development of magic rather than personal reverence 213.

Rhode later helped establish the Continental Magic Association in the Land of Ayr, overseeing it alongside Serie and entrusting its day-to-day affairs to Frieren and Aila when necessary 254 277. He continues researching advanced magic, including the creation of life, while his return and apparent immortality attract attention from ambitious mages and political powers 327 328.

Appearance

Rhode is a youthful-looking human man with black hair. His outward appearance remained young even after decades and, later, a thousand years had passed, leading others to question whether he possessed immortality magic 146 243.

  • Black-haired 231
  • Retains a youthful appearance despite the passage of time 146 299
  • His reincarnated body was initially pale, fragile, and unable to withstand impacts 109 110
  • Commonly carries a Holy Sword in combat 231

Personality

Rhode is imaginative and inventive, approaching magic as something that can be improved, recombined, and created rather than merely inherited. He applies his own reasoning to magical problems, whether developing rapid plant growth, practical recovery potions, weapon-related enchantments, or large-scale combat magic 11 24 36.

He is pragmatic but deeply concerned with the consequences of power. He restricted False Divine Strike, encrypted its formula, and accepted that some magic should not be freely accessible or easily misused 99 189. His desire to spread magic stems from wanting humanity to escape hardship, not from a desire to be worshipped 213.

Despite his overwhelming strength, Rhode is playful with those close to him, particularly Serie. He frequently teases her, while also showing patience, protectiveness, and a willingness to support her emotional growth 60 148 208. He openly describes his own greatest wish as spending a little longer with someone and walking toward eternity together 203.
