| First Appearance | Chapter 17 |
Background
Nero was raised as a prodigy of the Arisa Family, a prestigious dueling clan whose children receive rare cards, renowned instructors, and specialized training. She began dueling at three, sparred with professional duelists from age five, and could perform Ritual Summons proficiently by seven; the family consequently designated her a “Duel King Reserve.” 49 75
Her upbringing was restrictive. Her father rejected her wish to attend school and make friends, insisting that dueling weaker opponents was meaningless and that she existed to become a Duel King for the family. 18 Nero was nevertheless enrolled at Duelist Academy because her aunt Polyvia had achieved extraordinary success there; the family hoped Nero could replicate that path. 75
Initially linked to the Crimson Lotus Society, Nero became a target after losing her family deck. Several girls cornered her over the Society's actions, but she defeated them with a backup deck and Demise, Supreme King of Armageddon. 21 Crimson Lotus later encouraged her to join Hara Shichi's team, though Nero initially concealed that motivation. 50
Appearance
Nero is a petite, doll-like girl with a frail build and an unusually composed bearing. Her delicate appearance contrasts sharply with the intensity of her dueling and the pressure she projects when taking the field. 47 270
- Silky short black hair. 270
- Distinctive black-and-white eyes. 270
- Fair, smooth complexion and a small, often expressionless face. 21 270
- Slender arms and poor physical endurance despite extensive dueling training. 75 126
- Uses a small black Duel Disk worn on her arm. 47 124
Personality
Nero is calm, direct, and highly competitive. She approaches duels with disciplined concentration, routinely assesses an opponent's field and resources, and dislikes stopping before she has made the strongest board available. 85 157 Her confidence is rooted in the Arisa Family's expectations: she states without hesitation that she does not intend to lose. 51
Despite her polished dueling ability, Nero is inexperienced with ordinary social life. She wanted friends even as a child, eagerly tries video games, and treats outings, dates, and relationships with earnest curiosity rather than cynicism. 18 51 52 282 She can also be easily embarrassed, particularly over personal matters such as others removing her shoes or seeing her untidy room. 90 114
Nero values victory earned through her own strength. When she realizes Polyvia has been deliberately holding back, she surrenders despite having a possible winning line, refusing to accept a charitable victory. 312 Her resolve can waver under overwhelming pressure, but she continues fighting while she still has Life Points remaining. 311

Story Role and Major Arcs
Crimson Lotus Society and Recruitment
Nero first appears as an overwhelmingly well-resourced duelist whose Ritual deck exposes the disparity between ordinary students and elite dueling families. After defeating Yukikaze, losing her own family deck, and being targeted over her Crimson Lotus Society affiliation, she proves that she can fight independently even with a backup deck. 17 21
Her eventual entry into Hara Shichi's team is prompted by Crimson Lotus, but Nero must earn the others' trust—especially Julie's—before becoming a tournament representative. 50 51
National Higher Academy Tournament
Nero becomes one of Duelist Academy's most dependable starters, winning several high-profile matches through Ritual boards built around Chaos MAX Dragon, Unicore, and Void Dragon Demon King. 85 89 124 Her victories make her nationally recognizable, inspiring fan groups such as the “Nero Baby Support Group.” 89
The tournament also reveals her limits: after winning three consecutive duels, she collapses from exhaustion, and her later loss to Sera demonstrates that resilience does not always overcome a superior field. 89 174
Arisa Family Pressure
When Polyvia arrives to take Nero home, Nero openly admits that she does not want to leave the academy, but initially lacks the courage to disobey her aunt. 76 Following Hara Shichi's challenge to Polyvia, the family allows Nero three years of temporary freedom at the academy, while warning her that she must keep growing to earn genuine freedom. 76 80
Nona's Contract and Later Conflict
While searching for Hara Shichi, Nero meets Nona, mistakes her for a ghost, and accepts a contract to assist with Nona's unfinished obsession in exchange for dueling instruction. 308 309 Nona's presence gives Nero guidance in difficult duels but also becomes dangerous when she possesses Nero to act against Avis and Alvett. 311 331 342
Nero later acts as an information relay for Hara Shichi's group while avoiding direct pursuit by the Duelist Alliance, using her Arisa Family status as protection if caught. 327
Notable Quotes
