Background

Alina was attacked while transporting supplies after encountering former Reunion members who had left the organization. Griseo and Mister Knight drove the attackers away, allowing Alina to escape with Griseo and the recovered supplies. Despite knowing nothing of Griseo’s origin, Alina brought her back to Reunion’s camp and accepted responsibility for her safety 1 2.

At camp, Alina became Griseo’s primary caregiver. She provided food, arranged for her own injuries to be treated, allowed her to paint, and treated Griseo’s sudden “Mama” address with warmth rather than suspicion 2 3. She also teaches Reunion’s children and continues caring for the wounded during the camp’s later crisis 3 42.

As Reunion grows and its circumstances change, Alina remains involved in both the camp’s daily care and its leadership decisions. She participates in resource discussions, accepts Griseo’s supplies only on Reunion’s promise to repay them, and continues to balance concern for Griseo with the belief that Reunion must become capable of protecting itself 133 134 170.

Personality

Alina is compassionate and protective, particularly toward children and vulnerable Infected. She takes in Griseo despite the danger and uncertainty surrounding her, worries when Griseo disappears from the tent, and prioritizes the children’s safety during the attack on Reunion 2 6 40.

Her kindness is tempered by practical judgment. Unlike Talulah’s earlier idealism, Alina recognizes that not everyone will act benevolently, particularly after being attacked by former Reunion members for supplies 2 6. She urges Talulah not to pursue personal revenge, but insists that Talulah must still confront the consequences of weak leadership and protect the Infected who follow her 4 6.

Alina respects Griseo’s boundaries and secrets. Although she is curious about Griseo’s origin and abilities, she does not press her for answers, instead focusing on keeping her safe and cared for 3 9. Even as Griseo becomes increasingly independent, Alina encourages her not to be overly restrained or “too sensible,” telling her that she may rely on others and be willful when she needs help 171.

She also maintains a strong sense of responsibility for Reunion’s future. While accepting Griseo’s assistance when necessary, Alina does not want the movement to become dependent on outside protection and believes it must develop the strength to shelter Infected through its own efforts 170.

Taking Griseo into Reunion

After Griseo saves her from the supply ambush, Alina leads her to Reunion’s camp and becomes the first person in Terra to offer her a safe place to stay. Her warmth strongly influences Griseo, who quickly adopts Alina’s mannerisms and calls her “Mama” 2.

Guiding Talulah

Alina’s encounter with former Reunion members exposes the danger created by Talulah’s permissive leadership. She persuades Talulah to distinguish personal revenge from a leader’s responsibility to enforce order, prompting Talulah to reconsider how Reunion should be governed 4 6.

Alina also witnesses the effects of Griseo’s first painting, which shows her a possible future in which she, Yelena, and others fall into ruin. She credits Griseo’s arrival with changing that future 4 7.

Supporting Griseo’s Place in Reunion

When Patriot questions Griseo’s identity and the risks of keeping a non-Infected child in Reunion, Alina defends her. She explains Griseo’s “blank canvas” nature: prolonged proximity causes her to absorb and imitate another person’s colors, but the effect fades when she is left alone 9 10.

Alina supports Griseo’s attempt to help Talulah through painting. After Talulah’s resulting dream gives her a more mature and pragmatic outlook, Alina recognizes Griseo’s influence on the group’s future 8 12.

Defense of Reunion

During the Elite Guard assault on Reunion, Alina wakes Griseo and Alyona as soon as she learns the camp is under attack. After Griseo neutralizes the immediate threat, Alina checks that she is unharmed and comforts her when the overwhelming colors of the battlefield leave her distressed 40 42.

Meeting Mudrock

After W’s repeated pranks raise concerns over Griseo’s safety, Alina accompanies Griseo to deliver a painting to Mudrock. She introduces herself as one of Griseo’s guardians and meets Mudrock politely, ultimately trusting Griseo’s judgment while remaining attentive to the risks surrounding the child’s new friendship with a Sarkaz mercenary 52 53 57.

Supporting Reunion’s Growth

When Griseo returns from Columbia with gifts and needed supplies, Alina joins Talulah, Yelena, and Patriot in accepting the aid on the condition that Reunion record an IOU and repay Griseo after the movement becomes stronger 133.

Alina also opposes the idea of Reunion relying on Sakura’s protection merely because Griseo is away, emphasizing that the movement must be able to defend itself and eventually protect other Infected independently. After Griseo explains Sakura’s role in her rapid return and Sakura’s need for rest, Alina agrees to the temporary arrangement and offers to help explain it to Talulah 170.

Helping Griseo Reach Talulah

When Griseo seeks help convincing Talulah to accept her assistance, Alina reassures her that she does not need to handle every concern alone. She later speaks with Talulah directly, encouraging her to accept Griseo’s kindness and avoid allowing guilt over the child’s support to create distance between them 171 172.
