Background / History

Hulk originated as a separate soul within Bruce Banner's body. Banner had coexisted with him for five years by the time of their first known encounter with Xu Fan. Hulk's mind was compared to that of a toddler: quick-tempered, unable to distinguish right from wrong, and prone to destroying anything that angered him. 447

Banner initially treated Hulk solely as a monster to suppress or eliminate. After witnessing Hulk's usefulness against Abomination and receiving Xu Fan's guidance, Banner briefly considered combining his own intellect with Hulk's strength to protect others. Xu Fan argued that Hulk was part of Banner rather than an enemy to fear. 446 447

Xu Fan later forced Banner's soul out of his body, allowing Banner to see Hulk directly for the first time. Hulk was subsequently trained through combat with Kaguya; his fighting shifted gradually from simple smashing and throwing toward martial-arts techniques, and his endurance against her increased over repeated sessions. 446 447 559

After Hulk's uncontrolled Green Scar rampage during the Chitauri invasion, Banner chose to separate their souls permanently. Using a magic circle and breathing techniques, Banner expelled Hulk and banished him through a portal to the hell dimension. 603 604

In hell, Hulk fought demons until he challenged a powerful demon lord. After losing a battle that lasted three days and nights, he was thrown onto Sakaar. There, his soul form became a celebrated gladiator, developed friendships, and gained enough calmness to converse normally outside combat. 647

Appearance

Hulk is a massive green humanoid with an increasingly imposing physique as his rage rises. His size varies drastically by transformation and emotional state.

  • Normally manifests at over two meters tall when Banner's soul is removed. 446
  • Reached approximately five meters after the Mind Scepter forced his transformation. 585
  • Expanded to roughly eight meters during the New York rampage, then around ten meters while emitting green steam. 587 589
  • Green Scar is comparatively smaller—about three meters—but exerts far greater pressure and power than his larger forms. 596
  • In his separated state, Hulk exists as a soul form and cannot access Green Scar without Banner's physical body. 647 710

Personality

Early Hulk is impulsive and emotionally immature. He reacts to frustration with indiscriminate violence, treats opponents as toys, and initially has little concern for human lives or collateral damage. 427 447

Despite his rage, Hulk retains memories of his actions and can experience fear. Xu Fan's effortless defeat of him leaves a lasting trauma; Hulk repeatedly freezes, retreats, or becomes unwilling to transform when confronted with Xu Fan. 430 440 644 647

Life on Sakaar matures Hulk considerably. He learns to communicate, values the admiration and friendships he finds there, and becomes capable of choosing where he belongs. However, he deeply resents Banner for banishing him to hell and believes that Earth has no place for him because “no one likes Hulk.” 641 647

Hulk is fiercely loyal once he considers someone a friend. He returns to Earth through the Bifrost specifically to help Thor against Thanos, despite his continued hatred of Earth, and later attempts to defend Asgard from Surtur. 688 710

Abilities & Skills

Gamma Physiology

Hulk possesses immense physical strength, speed, durability, and healing through the Hulk factor.

  • His ordinary punches can reach hundreds of tons of force and damage military tanks. 430
  • Small-arms fire, advanced military weaponry, Chitauri attacks, and Iron Man's weapons fail to meaningfully injure him. 427 588 594
  • He can create craters, shatter runways, throw vehicles, and devastate city blocks through raw force. 427 588 591
  • His body heals rapidly enough that even General Ross recognizes the Hulk factor as highly survivable. 589

Rage-Based Growth

Hulk's power increases continuously with anger.

  • Physical attacks and attempts to restrain him can intensify his rage and increase his strength instead of subduing him. 429 588
  • He can grow dramatically in size during prolonged combat, reaching approximately ten meters in New York. 587 589
  • His rage makes him unable to distinguish allies from enemies; during Loki's scheme, he attacks civilians, Chitauri, Thor, and other heroes alike. 585 588
  • This growth does not function the same way after his separation from Banner, preventing him from becoming Green Scar in soul form. 647 710

Green Scar Transformation

Green Scar is Hulk's most dangerous documented form, triggered when the nuclear missile attack pushes his rage past its limit.

  • Green Scar is physically smaller than Hulk's ten-meter rage form but incomparably stronger and more refined. 596
  • His presence causes fear among allies and enemies, while his full power cracks New York's ground and destabilizes skyscrapers. 596 597
  • He casually defeats Red Hulk and launches heroes, Chitauri, and Leviathans away with Hulk Slash. 597
  • Even in this form, he remains unable to defeat Xu Fan. 647

Improvised Combat

Hulk primarily fights through direct physical violence but gradually develops more technique through training.

  • Uses cars, boulders, and arena weapons as improvised weapons. 588 642
  • Initially relies on punching, smashing, throwing, and charging. 427 447
  • Training under Xu Fan's supervision improves his use of martial-arts techniques and his combat endurance against Kaguya. 559

Relationships

  • Bruce Banner — Former host and other half of the shared body. Their relationship shifts from fearful coexistence to mutual resentment after Banner expels Hulk into the hell dimension. 447 603 604 647
  • Xu Fan — Trainer and overwhelming superior opponent. Xu Fan seeks to educate Hulk rather than kill him, but Hulk develops a deep fear of Xu Fan after repeated defeats. 430 447 647
  • Thor — Friend and frequent combat partner. Hulk answers Thor's call for help against Thanos and attempts to protect Thor's home of Asgard. 641 688 710
  • Kaguya — Xu Fan's trainee who easily defeats Hulk during his early training, exposing his lack of skill beyond brute strength. 447 449
  • General Ross / Red Hulk — Longtime pursuer and rival. Hulk decisively defeats Red Hulk during the New York battle, though Ross had temporarily matched him by absorbing Thor's lightning. 590 591 592
  • Loki — Loki uses the Mind Scepter to force Hulk into a destructive rampage. Hulk's presence later terrifies Loki on Sakaar. 585 648
  • The Grandmaster — Sakaar's arena master, who profits from Hulk's status as a champion and manipulates Thor's fight to preserve Hulk's dominance. 643 644
