Background / History

Family Poison Backlash

Dugu Bo’s Jade Scale Snake evolved into the Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor, making his Martial Soul and Soul Power more powerful. His body did not evolve alongside them, however, so the resulting poisonous Variant Soul Power gradually eroded his constitution. He condensed more than half of this power into a Poison Pill, which helped keep him alive but did not resolve the underlying incompatibility 138 139.

His son died from Poison Backlash. To protect Dugu Yan from the same fate, Dugu Bo periodically used his Soul Power to regulate the toxins accumulating in her body. He also sought treatment from Ye Haitang, but the Nine Heart Begonia could not cure his condition; he subsequently relied on the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well to suppress it 73 121 139.

Meeting Qing Mu and Beginning Treatment

During a visit to Dugu Yan, Dugu Bo notices that her accumulated poison has decreased dramatically. Initially attributing the improvement to Ye Lingling, he asks her to repeat her treatment. When ordinary healing fails to reproduce the result, Qing Mu explains that Bulbasaur absorbed Dugu Yan’s poison during their earlier spar 73 74.

Bulbasaur successfully extracts Dugu Yan’s accumulated toxins, while Ye Lingling heals the weakness caused by their removal. Dugu Bo offers Qing Mu a favor and then agrees to undergo treatment himself. His much larger toxin burden overwhelms Bulbasaur’s absorption capacity after approximately ten minutes, establishing that his treatment must proceed through repeated sessions 75 76.

The Herb Garden and Temporary Recovery

Dugu Bo brings Qing Mu blindfolded to his private herb garden at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. He offers access to its herbs on the condition that Qing Mu completely treat his accumulated poison. Although he has detected that Qing Mu is concealing his cultivation, he promises not to exploit the young man’s secrets 80 81.

Qing Mu reveals his level-37 cultivation and Ivysaur form, then combines poison extraction with Grassy Terrain’s healing. Over two months and more than ten treatments, Dugu Bo regains his vitality and a younger appearance. This recovery is temporary: his Martial Soul continues producing the poisonous Soul Power responsible for the condition 81 82.

In repayment, Dugu Bo allows Qing Mu to take medicinal plants and gives him the Ruyi Hundred Treasures Pouch. He honors the agreement even as Qing Mu collects numerous Immortal Herbs whose full value Dugu Bo does not yet understand 82.

Xiao Wu’s Capture and Sacrifice

Dugu Bo identifies Xiao Wu as a hundred-thousand-year humanoid Soul Beast while observing the academy arena. Rather than reveal her identity publicly, he waits until night and captures her before she can use Teleportation. He initially considers killing her for her Soul Bone, since his existing nine Soul Rings prevent him from absorbing another ring 77 78 79.

Xiao Wu proposes a sacrifice that could bypass normal rank restrictions and greatly strengthen Dugu Yan. Tempted by the prospect of securing his granddaughter’s future, Dugu Bo agrees to consider a request within his personal limits. He later pressures Xiao Wu to sacrifice herself to Dugu Yan in exchange for his promise to help pursue her revenge; the alternative is death for her Soul Bone 79 84.

He conceals the abduction so effectively that searches by Heaven Dou Royal Academy and the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect find no clues. After taking Dugu Yan to the well, Xiao Wu’s sacrifice produces a blood-red pillar visible to powerful observers across the continent. Dugu Yan receives the hundred-thousand-year Soul Ring and Soul Bone 85 86 117 119.

Medicinal Research and the Permanent Cure

After learning how much Immortal Herbs can improve cultivation, Dugu Bo reluctantly agrees to develop the garden rather than merely conceal it. He recruits Yang Wudi after testing his herb-identification skills, pairing promises of benefits with a threat to destroy the Breaking Clan if the secret is leaked 120 127.

Dugu Bo and Yang Wudi produce a Soul-Raising Pellet, which Qing Mu improves through Ivysaur’s controlled flames and Wood Spirit Power. Their cooperation develops into an ongoing production system: the older researchers prepare medicinal formulas, and Qing Mu refines them into higher-quality pills 128 129 137.

The lasting solution to Dugu Bo’s condition comes from changing his constitution rather than repeatedly draining poison. Using Qing Mu’s altered blood, fragments shed by Ivysaur, and other medicinal ingredients, the three develop Icefire Mysterious Pills. Dugu Bo and Dugu Yan consume them, become unharmed by their poisonous Soul Power, and gain beneficial Martial Soul mutations 139.

Sparring and Protecting Qing Mu’s Allies

Dugu Bo serves as Qing Mu’s sparring partner, initially intending to guide a rapidly advancing junior. Venusaur’s attacks and regeneration force him to take the matches seriously. Because poison is ineffective against Qing Mu and Venusaur, repeated battles also improve Dugu Bo’s movement, evasion, and direct-combat techniques 129 130 131 132.

He eventually concedes a spar after Solar Beam and Power Whip exhaust his protective membrane. He deliberately withholds Time Freeze, considering its use against a Soul Ancestor embarrassing. Later, when Qing Mu reaches level 60, Dugu Bo refuses another match because he suspects that even an unrestricted fight could end in defeat 132 153.

Their alliance extends beyond training. Dugu Bo helps Qing Mu and Dugu Yan hunt their fifth Soul Rings, agrees to protect Qing Mu’s parents and the Ye Family during a dangerous meeting, and later conceals Qing Mu’s whereabouts from visiting sect leaders 134 135 210 231.

Sea God Island

Dugu Bo asks Qing Mu to include Yang Wudi in the journey to Sea God Island, hoping divine assistance can overcome his friend’s level-89 bottleneck. Qing Mu agrees, and Dugu Bo immediately leaves to bring Yang Wudi from the well 263.

Despite his advanced age, Dugu Bo receives a Black-Level Fifth Trial. Qing Mu judges his repaired Martial Soul and level-95 cultivation comparable to Sea Dragon Douluo’s strength. Dugu Bo also supports Dugu Yan’s acceptance of Bo Saixi’s offer to become her disciple and future successor 273.

During a later trial-related difficulty, Dugu Bo struggles to handle numerous thousand-year Sea Soul Beasts without harming them. Qing Mu suggests using poison, pointing to his own use of sleeping powder as an example of a nonlethal approach 278.

Appearance

  • Original appearance: Flowing green hair, emerald-green eyes, a beard, and green robes 74 76 80.
  • After detoxification: Becomes visibly younger and more energetic; his hair turns black as the poison’s oppressive effects are removed 82 86.
  • Martial Soul Avatar: A thirty-meter-long serpent, as thick as a water vat, covered in emerald, diamond-shaped scales 130.

Personality

Dugu Bo is temperamental, blunt, and dismissive of unnecessary ceremony. His disregard for convention contributes to an unfavorable reputation, while his insistence on secrecy can become threatening: he warns Yang Wudi that leaking information about the well will cost the entire Breaking Clan its existence 88 127.

His affection for Dugu Yan drives both his protective behavior and his ruthlessness. He reacts immediately when treatment weakens her, guards her almost constantly after Xiao Wu’s sacrifice, and advises her to avoid the tournament rather than expose her hundred-thousand-year Soul Ring. That same devotion leads him to exploit Xiao Wu’s captivity for his granddaughter’s advancement 75 84 118 133.

Toward people he trusts, he can be generous and loyal. He honors his promises to Qing Mu, becomes concerned for his safety, and actively seeks a cultivation opportunity for Yang Wudi. His pride also has limits: he acknowledges defeat in sparring rather than using his strongest control skill to secure a victory over a much lower-ranked opponent 82 129 132 263.

Abilities & Skills

Poison Manipulation

  • Lethal venom: His evolved Martial Soul produces poison described as potentially fatal on contact to Spirit Masters below the Titled Douluo realm 75.
  • Mixed toxins: Injects neurotoxins and movement-slowing poison into the Flowing Light Roaring Ape King 135.
  • Corrosive mist: Weakens Solar Beam and slows attacking vines, creating opportunities to defend or escape 130 132.
  • Protective membrane: Covers his serpent avatar in a poisonous defensive layer; sufficiently powerful attacks can exhaust or penetrate it 131 132.
  • Poison Array: Guards the approach to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. Qing Mu and Bulbasaur can traverse it with negligible damage because of their immunity and healing 118.
  • Ninth Soul Skill: Can spread poison over a wide area, making it especially effective against weaker opponents when combined with time control 135.
  • Counter: Poison immunity removes his principal advantage against Qing Mu and Venusaur 132 153.

Seventh Soul Skill: Martial Soul Avatar

  • Transforms into the enormous Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor, gaining powerful close-range attacks and substantial physical defense 130 131.
  • Uses bites, tail strikes, and Jade Green Lasers fired from the serpent’s eyes 130 132.
  • Can maintain the avatar for extended periods because its usual side effects are effectively eliminated at the Titled Douluo level 130.
  • His avatar’s attacks overwhelm Venusaur’s Falling Petal Barrier during their early spars 131.

Eighth Soul Skill: Time Freeze

Also described as Time Pause, this skill immobilizes targets across a large area 134 135.

  • Stops everything within several thousand square meters, preventing the exceptionally fast Flowing Light Roaring Ape King from escaping 134.
  • Gives Dugu Bo time to poison immobilized opponents before releasing the effect 135.
  • At level 93, its immense Soul Power cost limits him to at most two uses in a battle 153.
  • Qing Mu cannot directly break free at that stage, but plans to evade it by teleporting outside its range as Dugu Bo’s eighth ring lights up 153.

Medicinal Research

  • Transplants medicinal plants into the well and possesses substantial herb knowledge by ordinary standards, though initially fails to recognize its Immortal Herbs 82.
  • Co-develops the Soul-Raising Pellet and participates in improving its formula and safety 128 129.
  • Helps research the Icefire Mysterious Pills that permanently resolve the Dugu family’s poison incompatibility 139.
  • Establishes a research base with Yang Wudi and Ye Haitang, relying on Qing Mu and Ivysaur for unusually efficient pill refinement 176.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Medusa Skull — A Soul Bone identified as an important asset when facing Soul Beasts aged eighty or ninety thousand years; its specific ability is not described in the provided passages 121.
  • Poison Pill — Stores more than half of his mutated poisonous Soul Power. Condensing it requires tremendous Soul Power and Spiritual Power, making the method impractical below the Titled Douluo rank 139.
  • Ruyi Hundred Treasures Pouch — Formerly his blue leather storage pouch; preserves living plants. Given to Qing Mu as repayment for treatment 82 88.
  • Icefire Mysterious Pill — Consumed to make his constitution compatible with his Martial Soul’s poison and induce a beneficial mutation 139.
  • Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well — Private hideout and herb garden, initially used to suppress his poison and later developed into a medicinal research base 80 121 176.

Relationships

  • Dugu Yan — Granddaughter and foremost personal priority. He regulates her poison, secures Xiao Wu’s sacrifice for her, assists her Soul Ring hunts, and supports her future under Bo Saixi 73 86 134 273.
  • Unnamed son — Died from Poison Backlash. Dugu Bo regrets that Qing Mu’s treatment was not available early enough to save him 73 75.
  • Qing Mu — Initially a prospective healer, later a trusted ally, medicinal collaborator, and sparring partner. Dugu Bo hopes Qing Mu’s future strength will protect his descendants 75 81 129 135.
  • Yang Wudi — Medicinal research partner who becomes a close friend. Dugu Bo advocates for his inclusion in the Sea God trials to overcome his cultivation bottleneck 127 128 263.
  • Ye Lingling — Dugu Yan’s close friend and an early source of hope for treatment. Her healing supports Bulbasaur’s first poison extraction 74 75.
  • Ye Haitang — Formerly consulted for treatment; later recruited as a trusted medicinal researcher because of her expertise and connection to Qing Mu 88 121 139 176.
  • Xiao Wu — Captive whose identity he exposes. He coerces her sacrifice for Dugu Yan in exchange for a promise to assist her revenge 78 79 84.
  • Bo Saixi — Offers Dugu Yan mentorship and succession as Sea God Island’s High Priestess, with Dugu Bo’s approval 273.
