Background / History

Old Ancestor Bodhi is Zhunti's Good Corpse, a Saint-derived avatar whose cultivation reached the late Quasi-Saint realm. His Saintly origin grants him immense authority and power, though he remains vulnerable to superior Saint-level opponents and exceptional Quasi-Saints. 172 304 898

Following the Investiture of the Gods tribulation, Bodhi used the Great Dao of Karma to trace and preserve the damaged True Spirits of Daoist Randeng and others killed by Gu Changsheng. He expended the Destiny of the Western Teachings and blocked Purple Firmament Divine Thunder to save them, drawing widespread attention from Primordial Great Experts. 304

On Spirit Mountain, Bodhi preached to the former Intercepting Sect disciples acquired by the Western Teachings. His sermon prompted them to sever their “Three Thousand Strands of Affliction”; after Bodhi manifested as Buddha Mother Bodhi, the Western Teachings formally separated from the Xuanmen and became Western Buddhism. 304 305

Appearance

Old Ancestor Bodhi commonly appears as an elderly Buddhist monk in robes, often carrying a fly whisk and surrounded by golden or seven-colored divine light. His presence can release layered Dao rhythm, Law power, and oppressive Buddha light. 172 335

  • Buddha Mother manifestation — possesses three eyes, eighteen arms, perfect divine light, radiant flames, and numerous orbiting Buddhist artifacts. 305
  • Three sacred eyes — the Buddha Eye, Dharma Eye, and Wisdom Eye. 305
  • Myriad Buddha Dharma Idol — manifests innumerable Buddha images and a vast array of spiritual treasures in battle. 577 748
  • Golden lotus aura — frequently appears amid golden lotuses, auspicious clouds, and Buddhist radiance. 748

Personality

Bodhi presents himself as composed, merciful, and persuasive, using Buddhist doctrine and promises of merit or Buddha Fruit Positions to recruit followers. He personally saved a human couple from wolves and accepted their infant son as a disciple after recognizing him as a reincarnated Buddha. 305 690 821

Behind this benevolent image, he is highly calculating. He spends Buddhism's Destiny to preserve valuable allies, manipulates reincarnation, plants disciples in political and religious conflicts, and seeks to bind powerful figures through karmic debts. His scheme against Great Immortal Zhenyuan's Ginseng Fruit Tree was intended to make Zhenyuan owe Buddhism karma. 304 358 451 585

Bodhi is deeply prideful about his status as a Saint's Three Corpses. Repeated setbacks against Gu Changsheng, Kong Xuan, and other opponents provoke visible anger, desperation, and vows of revenge. 416 580 825

Story Role / Major Arcs

Establishment of Western Buddhism

Bodhi preserved Randeng and other damaged True Spirits at severe cost to Western Teachings Destiny, then guided the conversion of former Intercepting Sect disciples. His Buddha Mother manifestation marked the Western Teachings’ separation from the Xuanmen into Western Buddhism. 304 305

Journey to the West Schemes

While spreading Buddhism, Bodhi recruited the seventy-two Cave Demon Kings of Flower-Fruit Mountain and arranged pieces for Buddhism's eastward expansion. He accepted Yuan Hong as a disciple and ordered him not to reveal his master's identity. 335 336 339

Bodhi later instructed the disguised Yang Jian to topple Zhenyuan's Ginseng Fruit Tree, intending to force Zhenyuan into a karmic debt. The plot failed when the tree remained intact, leaving Bodhi unable to identify who had turned his scheme against him. 358 362

Conflict with Gu Changsheng

Bodhi directly challenged Gu Changsheng in Chaos with the Seven Treasures Wonderful Tree, Six Roots Pure Bamboo, and Nine-Ranked Lotus Platform. Gu Changsheng ultimately drove him back using the Heaven-Opening Divine Axe manifestation formed through the Chaos Bell and Pangu Banner. 414 415 416

Their hostility continued through repeated battles. Bodhi deployed the Myriad Buddha Dharma Idol and numerous Buddhist treasures, but Gu Changsheng's Chaos Bell shattered his attacks and forced him into retreat. 565 566 723 748

Buddhist Expansion and Political Manipulation

Bodhi attempted to install Huang Chao as the Human Co-Lord for Buddhism's benefit, but Gu Changsheng summoned the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors to expose the fraud. Huang Chao was stripped of the title and killed, forcing Bodhi to retreat. 446

He also exploited resentful souls and reincarnated agents, including Cao Er and Zhang Daoxian, to interfere with the Heavenly Court and Human Race. 451 585 587

Human Race Campaign

Bodhi protected the birth of Fosheng, identified him as a reincarnated Buddha, and trained him to the Golden Immortal realm in little more than ten years. He armed Fosheng with Sarira, prayer beads, and the Demon-Subduing Pestle before ordering him to aid the Great Desert's conquest. 820 821

When Zhu Zi opposed Buddhism's human-world influence, Bodhi attempted to convert and then kill him. Yang Jian and Kong Xuan intervened, killed Bodhi's Imperial Advisor, destroyed or repelled his treasures, and wounded Bodhi until he withdrew. 823 824 825

Underworld Imprisonment

Seeking to recover the souls of fallen Buddhist disciples, Bodhi demanded access to the Underworld's dead. Great Emperor Fengdu refused, and Houtu suppressed and imprisoned him with Earthly Dao Saintly Might. 839 840

Zhunti and Jieyin eventually secured Bodhi's release by compensating Houtu with three Supreme Grade Innate Spiritual Treasures. Bodhi was then sent to reinforce Buddhism in the Southern Continent of Jambudvipa. 841 842

Battle against Demon Ancestor Wutian

During Wutian's assault on the Great Thunderclap Monastery, Bodhi attempted to delay the demonic Saint while awaiting Zhunti and Jieyin. After Wutian killed Duobao Tathagata, Bodhi fought back with the Demon-Subduing Pestle and Myriad Buddha Dharma Idol. 896 898

Wutian's Saintly power proved overwhelming. Bodhi was pierced by the God-Slaying Spear and fled the Western Ox Continent despite his injuries. 898
