As the police cleaned up the crime scene, Li Wei had already returned to the asylum.
"Dr. Hugo, prepare for the werewolf experiment." Li Wei, for the first time ever, went down to the underground laboratory. He paused before asking, "By the way, you can revive people who have just died, right?"
Dr. Hugo, who was about to get up and prepare the experimental equipment, froze in place. He pointed to his own nose, looking at Li Wei in disbelief.
"Warden, where did you hear such a rumor? Revival? Me? If I had that ability, would I still be stuck in Arkham Asylum?"
"Uh..."
Li Wei was momentarily speechless.
Could he really say he knew about it from TV and movies in his past life?
But it seemed true. The villains Dr. Hugo had revived were always brought back under various coincidences; it wasn't like he could revive just anyone...
Li Wei was a bit troubled, scratching his head.
"Never mind, Dr. Hugo, you prepare the experiment first. We'll deal with other things once the experimental subject is delivered."
Stan was dead. Utterly dead.
There was no doubt about that.
Originally, Li Wei had wanted Dr. Hugo to revive Stan and then transform him into a werewolf.
But now, with Dr. Hugo potentially unable to revive him, it added more uncertainty to the werewolf experiment.
His Hero Template allowed him to grant the template to anyone with vital signs and modify them.
He wondered if just a heartbeat counted as a vital sign.
If not, he'd shock the heart. If that didn't work, he'd install an artificial heart for Stan!
Just tell him if it counts as a heartbeat!
How to get Stan's body.
This wasn't a difficult task, even though Stan was the "main culprit" in this poison gas incident.
Li Wei figured the Gotham PD should be almost done clearing the scene, so he left Arkham Asylum once more.
Gotham at night was filled with crime everywhere.
Especially after Li Wei acquired the Hero Template of Zaun's Fury, Warwick, he could sense this more clearly.
Warwick granted him an exceptionally keen sense of smell and the ability to sense blood over a wide area.
Li Wei could easily detect the scent of blood emanating from the depths of dark alleyways.
Bruce Wayne might be familiar with this scene, but for Li Wei, all he could do was quicken his pace and leave whenever he passed an alleyway with a scent of blood...
Otherwise, he worried he wouldn't be able to control Warwick's urge for blood and would rush into the alley, tearing apart the source of that sinful blood scent!
Li Wei made his way to the Gotham PD.
Gordon was just returning with the police officers.
Along with them were the bodies from the hotel, all confirmed dead by the on-site forensic examination.
Back at the police station, they were simply registered and sent to the morgue.
Stan's body was among them.
Stan's body didn't even need a forensic examination; after drinking a large amount of highly concentrated Viper Potion, all his bones had shattered, and his body was twisted beyond recognition.
Even collecting his remains required shovels to put them into body bags...
Li Wei arrived at the back entrance of the police station, where the morgue entrance was located.
Before long, Li Wei saw the police forensic doctor come out for a smoke.
"Hello, Doctor. Could you do me a favor?" Li Wei walked up to the doctor and said in a low voice, pulling out a wad of cash he had prepared and stuffing it into the man's hand.
The forensic doctor was taken aback by the person who suddenly appeared and handed him money. He looked at the cash in his hand, then at Li Wei, whose eyes were covered with cloth. It took him a few seconds to react.
The doctor didn't immediately put the money in his pocket. Instead, he took a deep drag of his cigarette and squinted at Li Wei.
"First, tell me what you need help with."
"I'm a friend of Stan Topolsky. I heard about what happened to him, and I want to take his body for burial. He had a miserable life, and I don't want him to be uncared for in death..."
It had to be said, Li Wei's acting skills, inherited from Kled, were excellent, and his excuse was reasonable.
At least this forensic doctor couldn't find any obvious flaws.
"Sir, do you know that Stan Topolsky is the main culprit in this case? His body is important evidence..."
The doctor spoke formally, but his smoking hand was subtly rubbing together.
Li Wei chuckled inwardly.
This was truly the Gotham way! Fortunately, he had come prepared.
"Then I'll have to trouble you, Doctor." Li Wei pulled out another wad of cash, thicker than the previous one, and handed it to the doctor.
"...However, now that the case is closed, it's only reasonable for the deceased's family or friends to claim the body."
The doctor's expression changed, and his attitude instantly reversed.
He chuckled as he pocketed the cash, leading Li Wei through the back door into the morgue.
What about the coroner? Doesn't he need to earn a living? Is his salary not enough?
The officers on patrol get extra income from the local shops every month, so this is the only chance for the coroner to make some extra cash!
As for Stan's criminal status?
That's completely fine too!
It's not like they haven't done this before, and besides, the person is dead, so what kind of trouble could it stir up?
If the higher-ups really investigate, they can just find another criminal's corpse, smash its bones, and hand it over.
Gotham never lacks poor people, even among criminals.
And so, with the coroner's assistance, Li Wei successfully collected a bag containing Stan's body from the police station.
After leaving the police station, Li Wei didn't linger outside. He hailed a taxi and headed back to Arkham Asylum.
The taxi driver, as is typical for his profession in any city, was one of the most well-informed individuals. Even before the official announcement from the Gotham police department was released, the driver was mysteriously gossiping with Li Wei about the night's gas leak incident.
According to the taxi driver, the gas leak that night was shrouded in mystery, even going so far as to involve Area 51 and aliens.
Li Wei did his best to suppress his laughter throughout the ride.
The chatty driver would never guess that the bag in his trunk contained the "prime suspect" of tonight's gas incident…
Of course, Li Wei wasn't laughing, and neither was Stan in the trunk. He remained very polite.
Upon successfully returning to Arkham Asylum, Li Wei once again made his way to the underground Indian Hill Hospital.
He placed the bag containing Stan on the table and waved at Dr. Hugo.
"Electrocute him!"
Dr. Hugo opened the bag and, seeing Stan as a lump inside, looked utterly confused.
"??????"
Chapter 34: Artificial Werewolf!
"Warden, is this bag containing a human corpse?" Dr. Hugo asked, pointing at the bag with uncertainty. "You want me to electrocute this corpse?"
Dr. Hugo didn't even need to look closely to know that the person in the bag was beyond dead.
Forget vital signs; the person's appearance was unrecognizable now…
Stan had already died from the fall, his body a horrific mess. Combined with the side effects of the Viper Potion he had consumed, his bones were shattered. Then, the jolting from being carried back in a bag by Li Wei had further disfigured him beyond recognition.
"That's right, this is Stan Topolsky, the material for the werewolf experiment I mentioned. You can try electrocution to see if it can help him regain vital signs."
Dr. Hugo: …
Warden, I really appreciate you thinking so highly of me!
This person is so dead, no amount of electrocution will get a reaction!
However, Li Wei's requirements weren't that high; he just needed a heartbeat at a minimum.
Under Li Wei's insistent demand, Dr. Hugo finally proceeded to electrocute "that lump" of Stan.
"Bang!"
The electric current struck the corpse, and the sound of positive and negative poles colliding echoed.
Stan, lying on the operating table, twitched violently, then fell silent.
The electrocardiogram monitor beside him remained a flat line.
Clearly, the first attempt at electrocution had failed.
"Continue!" Li Wei's voice was a little cold.
"Bang!"
"Bang!"
"Bang!"
"…"
The sounds of continuous electrocution filled the air, and Stan twitched on the operating table again and again.
But the electrocardiogram monitor remained a flat line.
Li Wei's frown deepened, and eventually, he snatched the electrocution device from Dr. Hugo's hand and personally began performing CPR on Stan.
The "bang bang" of electrocution became even more frequent!
Stan's corpse convulsed wildly on the operating table.
Li Wei's expression grew increasingly frantic as he mechanically electrocuted Stan's body.
At this point, even Dr. Hugo noticed that Li Wei's emotions were becoming unstable.
"Warden, it's burning…" Dr. Hugo cautiously reminded him.
Even he felt a bit unnerved seeing Li Wei like this.
Li Wei remained unmoved, continuing to electrocute Stan's corpse, jolt by jolt.
"Warden, he's burnt to a crisp, Stan's burnt to a crisp..." Dr. Hugo had no choice but to increase his efforts, reaching out to shake Li Wei.
Dr. Hugo shook him several times with force before Li Wei finally stopped.
Li Wei slumped to the ground, his face filled with dejection.
"Dr. Hugo, is there really no other way?"
In truth, Li Wei understood his own condition better than Dr. Hugo. After all, he had experienced the even more mentally unstable K'da Jinn, so it was impossible for him to suffer mental problems from such a minor blow.
He was simply unwilling to accept it, unwilling to accept that Stan had died like this.
Although Li Wei wasn't exactly a good person himself, he felt that good people shouldn't have short lives, or at least shouldn't end up like this.
Perhaps in his heart, Stan wasn't just a good person, but also represented the few remnants of his conscience that had not yet been extinguished.
"Uh, normally speaking, someone dead like this..." Dr. Hugo glanced sympathetically at the charred remains of Stan, "is definitely beyond saving."...
Li Wei instantly seized on the key point.
"Normally speaking? You mean there's an abnormal way?"
"Of course!" Dr. Hugo's expression turned excited. "That would be Alchemy! Alchemy might be able to turn decay into magic! In Singed's memories, the functions of Alchemy are far from simple!"
"How about... you try it?" Li Wei hesitated for a moment before saying.
