Background / History

Yae Sakura was raised in Yae Village alongside her younger sister, Yae Rin. Their mother, Yae, was the prior village miko; Sakura later learns that her father, the Yae God Master, poisoned and betrayed Yae before she was sacrificed. Before her death, Yae asked Xu Yanwu to protect Sakura and Rin. 314

Sakura and Rin first met Xu Yanwu when Sakura was five years old. They trained under him for ten years, but Sakura’s memories of that period were sealed; Xu Yanwu later removes the seal and restores them. 315 316 Rin eventually dies in Yae Village’s Sacrifice Ritual, becoming the central source of Sakura’s grief and resentment toward the village. 320 1133

As the village miko, Sakura defended Yae Village from bandits, beasts, and Honkai Beasts. She was often isolated from the villagers, but still brought the injured Kallen Kaslana—whom she found unconscious by a river—to Yae Shrine. 47 448 Their bond became romantic, though the Demon in the Box later corrupted Sakura and forced Kallen to seal her lover away. 96 1143

After her release five centuries later, Sakura learns that Xu Yanwu had saved Rin’s soul and preserved Kallen’s soul. She begins to reconsider her long-held hatred of Xu Yanwu after recovering her childhood memories and learning the truth of her mother’s fate. 314 315 320

Personality

Sakura is calm, polite, and quietly compassionate. Even when she has not seen other people for centuries, she approaches strangers with curiosity rather than hostility; she pursued the Hyperion’s sub-ship because she wanted to speak with people again. 411 412

Her greatest trait is stubborn determination. She refuses to retreat from difficult training, insists on facing stronger opponents to improve her swordsmanship, and can compel even Higu Maru to cooperate through sheer persistence. 605 608 614 Defeats and uncertainty do not make her abandon practice; she continues training alone when dissatisfied with her performance. 948

Himeko identifies Sakura as a powerful, Honkai-resistant potential Valkyrie and offers her a place in the Far East Branch. Sakura declines because finding Xu Yanwu and resolving their past takes priority. 417
