Background and History

As a child in Meteor City, Chrollo regularly visited Father Zhol’s church to study videotapes. When Phinks and Feitan tried to rob him, he surrendered a decoy and escaped with his actual find—one of the preparations he made to survive among stronger children 8 9 12.

At age ten, he organized a dubbed cartoon screening for Meteor City’s children. When the projector failed, he held the audience’s attention by performing one of the characters onstage. The screening earned praise from Father Zhol and Uvogin, helped Chrollo and Uvogin reconcile, and brought their groups together 24 26 30.

Chrollo then joined Mog’s group to create Hyakuju Sentai, directing the production, writing its episodes, and playing its central hero, Lion Red 36 37 39 42. After the group uncovered filmed abuse of Meteor City children, he worked with Mog to bring evidence to Elder Babagra and proposed using the internet to help catch the perpetrators 47 48 49.

When Mog left Meteor City, Chrollo stayed to study and organize its systems. He gained the elders’ trust, promoted a shared identity among residents, and prepared information for the Troupe’s campaign against Lisnos and the Children’s Future Foundation 53 68 119 126. After Mog formally named the Phantom Troupe, its rules established Chrollo as commander whenever Mog was absent 123 125.

Appearance

Chrollo is introduced at age ten as a short, thin boy with a youthful face. At thirteen, he has a steadier bearing and a sickly pale complexion 9 24 122.

  • Wears two simple blue charms on his earlobes and bandages around his forehead at thirteen 122.
  • Later bears an inverted cross on his forehead 215.

Personality

Chrollo favors preparation over force: he uses a decoy to protect a valuable find, avoids approaching Mog before understanding his abilities, and argues against compromising a surveillance device by attaching bombs to it 9 21 131. He can also adapt quickly in public, as he does when the church screening breaks down 26.

He is protective of his companions and committed to Meteor City, though he does not trust its elders unconditionally 47 119 145. He generally prefers not to settle matters through combat; when a fight is unavoidable, he prioritizes winning and surviving over fighting fairly 192.

Abilities and Skills

Nen

  • Specialization — Chrollo awakens Nen through study of Mog’s training manual 122.
  • Master Thief’s Secret — His developing ability is intended to steal Nen abilities. Theft requires him to witness the ability, ask the user questions about it and receive an answer, and have the user touch the handprint on his book’s cover; those steps must occur within one hour. A stolen ability normally disappears from the book when its original user dies 214.
  • Teleportation — A stolen ability he uses to move multiple Troupe members into a hidden office 215.

Planning and Leadership

  • Coordinates the operation against Lisnos Corporation from outside, assigning combat, evidence-gathering, and collection tasks to other members 138.
  • Works with Shalnark to surveil Lisnos and treats exposing the foundation’s crimes as more useful than a simple assassination 130 131.
  • Later organizes factories, distribution channels, and personnel for a computer-parts business, drawing recruits from Meteor City to replenish the Ambrosia Mafia’s ranks 222 223.

Performance and Storytelling

  • Voices multiple cartoon roles and improvises an onstage performance to calm an audience during a projector failure 22 26.
  • Directs Hyakuju Sentai and writes plots and dialogue that improve over the course of production 39 42.

Equipment and Items

  • Nen training manual — Mog’s Shingen-ryu manual helps Chrollo awaken Nen 120 122.
  • Beni’s Blade — A sword Chrollo acquires; he plans to coat it with poison to hinder opponents quickly 192.
  • Blood Demon Frenzy Pill — Obtained from Mog for a planned use with Beni’s Blade 193.

Relationships

  • Mog — Troupe leader and Nen mentor; the two cooperate on Meteor City’s plans, with Chrollo serving as his designated commander in his absence 34 50 125 126.
  • Father Zhol — Supports Chrollo’s church screenings and recommends him to Meteor City’s elders 27 28 30.
  • Shalnark — Friend and frequent collaborator in study, surveillance, and intelligence work 9 130 146.
  • Pakunoda — Longtime companion who works on his productions and frequently remains at his side 12 22 190.
  • Uvogin — Initially an adversary; comes to admire Chrollo after the cartoon screening and joins his performance group 8 30.
  • Elder Babagra — Gives Chrollo access to outside-world knowledge and supports his work in Meteor City, though Chrollo later questions how far that support can be trusted 49 69 145.
