Background / History
Phinks grew up in Meteor City alongside Feitan. Before the Phantom Troupe's formation, the pair operated a motorcycle gang, scavenging and robbing to survive. Their conflict with Uvogin began over stolen Sticky Rice Cake and developed into an ongoing, highly personal rivalry. 9 15
Food provided by Mog sharply contrasted with Phinks' previous life. Though initially hostile and prideful, he thanked Mog sincerely after eating and introduced himself as Phinks Magcup. He was also the first of the group to directly ask whether Mog's special power could be learned, immediately accepting that power would demand a price. 17 18
Unlike Uvogin, whose pride prevented him from asking directly, Phinks viewed Mog's request-based condition as an exceptional opportunity. He and Feitan became willing to associate with Chrollo after Mog's inventions and guidance brought the Meteor City youths together. 18 23
Appearance
Phinks is recognizable for his lack of eyebrows, fierce expressions, and conspicuously eccentric clothing. In his early Meteor City days, he wore patched clothes and had hair standing up like hedgehog spines. 8
- Eyebrows — He has no eyebrows; his expressions are instead emphasized through his upper eyelids and browless forehead. 8 15
- Early attire — Wore patched, ragged clothing while riding with Feitan on a scrapped motorcycle. 8 9
- Bandages — Later habitually wraps himself in bandages, a style Franklin dismisses as Phinks' fashion rather than a necessity. 189
- Fashion tastes — Particularly fond of ancient pharaoh-style outfits and changing costumes frequently. 38
- Mummy-like styling — Other Troupe members consider his fashion strange; Phinks insists it represents trend, individuality, and uniqueness. 120
Personality
Phinks is aggressive, confrontational, and quick to trade insults, particularly with Uvogin. Their rivalry routinely escalates into threats of violence, but Phinks recognizes when a situation requires restraint. 15 60
Survival in Meteor City made him unusually pragmatic. He was willing to humble himself for food and eagerly pursued Nen training when he saw a path to becoming stronger. He also understands that meaningful power comes at a cost, rather than expecting it for free. 15 17 18
He is stubborn but not self-deluding. After Wing defeats him, Phinks accepts the result without making excuses, controls his temper, and resolves to train until he can defeat Wing in a rematch. 63 67
Phinks shares Feitan's interest in treating the outside world like a game and quickly adapts to Mog's “world game” analogy. He also has a playful, occasionally manipulative streak, such as persuading Feitan to play a villain in their film project so that Phinks could wear new costumes in every episode. 38 56
Abilities & Skills
Nen
Phinks is an Enhancement Type Nen user. His early combat style relies on wrapping Aura around his body to raise his attack power and defense, but Mog identifies this usage as crude after Phinks' awakening. 62 66 67
- Learned the foundations of Nen through Mog's instruction. 22 62
- Uses Enhancement for direct, close-range fighting. 66 67
- Undertook Shingen-ryu-informed training after losing to Wing. 67 69
- No individual named Nen ability is documented in the provided material.
Close-Quarters Combat
Phinks is a physically oriented fighter who prefers direct confrontation. Heaven's Arena appeals to him because it offers both strong opponents and prize money. 57 58
- Fought Uvogin repeatedly in Meteor City; during one clash, Uvogin claimed to have knocked out several of Phinks' teeth. 10 15
- Defeated ordinary opponents at Heaven's Arena but was outclassed by Wing's superior Nen control and tactical judgment. 60 62
- Served as one of Mog's eager sparring partners during the group's year of combat training. 69
- Fought during the Kude Bandit operation, ending the battle with his right arm swollen from exertion. 212
Tactical Restraint
Although easily angered, Phinks can recognize traps and avoid acting on provocation. During the Kude Bandits' ambush, he refused to enter Kakradi's mirror domain despite sustained taunting. 203
- Identified the mirror-filled tavern as an obvious trap. 203
- Withstood reverse psychology intended to bait Enhancement Type fighters into the domain. 203
- Allowed Bolokrief to take the lead when Bolokrief proposed destroying every mirror at once. 204
Driving
Phinks has experience operating motorcycles and was selected to drive Mog's RV when the group left Meteor City. 9 55
- Drove the group toward Biggerchira City. 55 56
- His abrupt braking at the border inspection nearly caused an accident inside the RV. 56
Equipment / Vehicles
- Scrapped motorcycle — Used with Feitan during their Meteor City gang days. 9
- Bandage-style clothing — A habitual fashion choice rather than confirmed combat gear. 189
- Mog's RV — Operated it while the group traveled beyond Meteor City. 55 56
Relationships
- Feitan Portoh — Closest companion and longtime partner from Meteor City. The two survived together, shared a motorcycle gang, pursued Nen training together, and are both enthusiastic gamers. 8 18 56
- Uvogin — Longstanding rival since the Sticky Rice Cake incident. They trade insults, threaten each other, and compete constantly, but can cooperate when necessary. 9 15 60
- Mog — Benefactor, teacher, and later Troupe leader. Mog's food, inventions, Nen instruction, and combat training give Phinks a path beyond Meteor City's survival struggle. 17 22 67 123
- Wing — Nen rival who defeated Phinks at Heaven's Arena. Phinks vows to surpass him through training rather than rejecting the loss. 62 63 67
- Machi — Fellow Troupe member who has little patience for Phinks' inappropriate suggestions; she silences him with Nen Threads after his suggestion that she replace a dead Shadow Beast. 217
- Bopobo — New Troupe member whose bandaged appearance immediately earns Phinks' enthusiastic approval as “excellent taste.” 194
