Background

Sun Wukong originates from a leftover five-colored stone used by Nuwa to mend the heavens after Mount Buzhou’s collapse. Cast onto Flower-Fruit Mountain, the stone absorbed the essence of heaven and earth and the radiance of the sun and moon until it developed sentience, cracked open, and produced a stone monkey. At birth, golden light from his eyes pierced the Thirty-Three Heavens and alerted the Heavenly Court. 144

Seeking immortality, he traveled to the West Niuhe Continent and entered the Cave of the Slanting Moon and Three Stars. Patriarch Bodhi accepted him as a disciple, named him Sun Wukong, and taught him divine abilities for ten years. Bodhi later expelled him with an explicit warning never to reveal his master’s name. 144

After returning to Flower-Fruit Mountain, Wukong killed the demon occupying it, resumed his position as monkey king, trained his followers, and lived in drinking and revelry. 146

Sun Wukong is a sharp-mouthed, monkey-faced stone monkey with golden eyes and fiery pupils. He is most often depicted armed and armored as the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. 146 155

Wukong is audacious, boastful, and impulsive. He calls himself a “Naturally Born Saint,” demands treasures from Ao Guang, and routinely responds to opposition with force. His greed for peaches, elixirs, and Ginseng Fruit repeatedly creates larger conflicts. 146 151 158

Early in his life, he is clever but lacks broader judgment. His six demon brothers, Emperor Ziwei, and Shen Gongbao all manipulate his pride or distrust for their own purposes. 148 150 Following his suppression, punishment by Zhen Yuanzi, and time on Three Immortal Island, he becomes more conscious of the Three Realms’ power structure and more cautious in his decisions. 161 226

Journey to the West and Departure

After five hundred years, Xuanzang removes the Buddhist seal and frees Wukong, who agrees to serve as his protector. He helps overcome the White Dragon Horse incident, deliberately engineers the destruction of Guanyin Monastery, and temporarily cooperates with Guanyin to search for the stolen kasaya. 155 156

His suspicion of Buddhism intensifies. After stealing Ginseng Fruit and toppling Zhenyuan’s tree, he seeks help on Three Immortal Island.
