His face wore an air of moral superiority and effortless calm, but inside, he was practically vibrating. He had kept his facial muscles as tense as stone to avoid revealing his nervousness. Actually, I had complete confidence in my acting skills—and even more confidence in the process Hassu taught me for disguising myself and infiltrating the Demon Hunters' ranks. The problem was that confidence was one thing, while nervousness was another. After all, these people were the best at investigating and screening suspects in a world crawling with monsters, each of them as vigilant as Lily clutching a huge bone. Who could guarantee that the Demon Hunter leading them wouldn't suddenly furrow his brow, sense something amiss, and draw his blade?
As it turned out, Hao Ren had successfully bluffed his way through it. After exchanging glances, the Demon Hunters showed no hostility or wariness. They were merely somewhat curious about Hao Ren.
It seemed that their vigilance and hunter's sixth sense only worked against nonhumans. When facing a target that was not inherently hostile, the Demon Hunters' instincts were no stronger than those of ordinary people.
"I'm the vanguard of this Hunt Group, Lockheed, a master-rank Demon Hunter," said the Demon Hunter who appeared to be their leader. "We don't know much about this place—we didn't even know there was a Wanderer Hunter here."
The implication was that there was a gap in this area's intelligence, and this suddenly appearing "Wanderer Hunter," Hao Ren, first needed to explain his identity.
