Background
Zhang Shuhui originally lived in a third-tier city. After collapsing from shock and spending three months in a vegetative state, her soul entered a post-apocalyptic novel she had read. She survived in that world for over five years before returning to her original body; none of the gold or gems she had collected could return with her. 941
Because she knew the novel’s original plot, Shuhui initially regarded Jiang You as a villain destined to die. A dream in which Jiang You protected her changed that view: she chose to remain beside Jiang You, survive, and try to alter her fate. Attempts to reveal certain plot knowledge directly cause physical backlash, including nosebleeds and hand cramps. 69 72 95
After returning home, Shuhui retained the instincts and techniques she developed in the apocalypse. Her immediate, violent takedown of her younger brother while she was not wearing her glasses frightened her family, while her combat ability attracted Ouyang Mingri of the Unconventional Events Administration. 941 942
Appearance
Zhang Shuhui is a strongly myopic young woman who is almost always seen in thick glasses. She has a round, freckled face and considers herself ordinary-looking, despite Chen Meiyu and Jiang You describing her as distinctive and special. 610
- Thick, “coke-bottle” glasses are her most recognizable feature. 886
- Her freckles are visible across her nose beneath her lenses. 903
- Without her glasses, her poor vision is severe—but her demeanor in battle becomes startlingly sharp and lethal. 746 904
- Often carries butcher knives and is associated with household tools, cooking pots, and work around the treehouse.
Personality
Shuhui is optimistic, earnest, and easily frightened, yet remarkably persistent. She openly calls herself weak or useless when facing stronger fighters, but repeatedly chooses to stand her ground when Jiang You, Da Zhuang, Yan Chi, or A Qing are threatened. 86 97 266
Her loyalty to Jiang You is intense and sometimes unhealthy. She fears being abandoned, is deeply distressed by Jiang You’s possible death, and reacts violently when the Gu siblings attempt to separate her from Jiang You with promises of freedom and equality. 72 267 540
Although she can be naïve, excitable, and prone to bizarre thoughts, Shuhui matures into someone capable of understanding deception, keeping Yan Chi’s weakness hidden, and recognizing that the world has moved beyond the original novel’s predetermined plot. 623 886
She is also insecure about her appearance, though she ultimately refuses a painful, high-risk transformation merely to become conventionally beautiful. 610
Abilities & Skills
Defense Ability — Golden Bell Shield
Shuhui’s ability manifests as a transparent defensive barrier resembling a turtle shell.
- Initially forms a narrow shell around herself and nearby allies. 86
- Blocks lightning, bullets, and other direct attacks. 90
- Its defense is not absolute: the force of an earth spike can still knock her backward and send her flying. 90
- Can protect Jiang You and hold off hostile ability users in close combat. 368
- Eventually remains active around the clock and expands over half of Tingfeng City. 797
- Can be disrupted by overwhelming mental-power fluctuations from A Qing. 904
Butcher-Knife Martial Arts
Shuhui fights with butcher knives and develops formidable close-quarters ability through extreme training.
- Jiang You teaches her practical killing and survival techniques. 941
- The Old Blind Man becomes her master and trains her in butcher-knife techniques through punishing drills involving weighted stances, iron sand, and sensory training without glasses. 746 808
- Pursues and kills Gu Mingxi and Gu Mingyuan after believing Jiang You has been killed, then takes their heads as intended sacrifices for Jiang You. 266 267
- While unassisted by her ability and without glasses, she displays enough speed and agility to cut through A Qing’s attacking vines while protecting Yan Chi. 903
- Retains the Fan Family’s Thirty-Six Styles of Pig Slaughtering Saber Technique after returning to her original world. 809 941
Culinary and Household Management
Shuhui treats housekeeping as a profession worth mastering rather than a lesser role.
- Serves as the treehouse’s cook and later Longshan’s head steward. 387 620
- Can remove the unpleasant gamey odor of mutated-beast meat using Meat Pouch Grass and other mutated spices. 430
- Her braised mutated wild boar becomes a major incentive for Longshan’s trainees. 430
- Pursues unusual culinary experiments, including requesting black flame to make stinky-tofu brine. 661
- Names the flying team the Shunfeng Unit, a name later associated with its ruthless assassination operations. 728
Knowledge of the Original Plot
As a transmigrator, Shuhui remembers portions of the novel’s original storyline.
- Identifies threats and major figures based on information from the novel, including the Zombie King and Wuxie the Monk. 819 371
- Her knowledge is incomplete, especially outside major plot events involving the original protagonists. 85
- Direct efforts to expose certain plot information are physically prevented. 95
- Eventually accepts that the world and its people have outgrown the story she read. 623
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Thick prescription glasses.
- Twin butcher knives.
- Cooking tools and mutated ingredients.
- Household supplies used in her work as Longshan’s steward.
- Customized disguises and accessories, including Da Zhuang’s tiger-striped fur design and the Rotting Corpse Captain’s sunglasses and odor-filtering mask. 287 310

- Yan Chi — Longtime companion whom Shuhui helped care for when he was newly awakened and childlike. They later support one another as equals, including when Shuhui conceals his exhausted condition from Wu Weizi. 290 886
- A Qing — The man-eating tree entrusted to Shuhui’s protection. Her duty to guard it becomes central to Longshan’s defense, though she is devastated when she cannot calm it during its rampage. 493 903
- Old Blind Man — Her butcher-knife master. His brutal training greatly improves her speed, strength, hearing, and combat skill. 746 808
- Bai Yin — A close companion who empathizes with Shuhui’s loneliness and repeatedly protects her from the Old Blind Man’s excessive training. 540 746
- Da Zhuang — Mutated calico cat and early ally. Shuhui treats him with exaggerated respect as “Lord Da Zhuang,” while repeatedly helping protect and care for him. 71 86
- Yang Jiao — A survivor who comforts Shuhui early in the apocalypse and advises her to focus on survival. 72
- Zhang Tai — Her brother in the apocalyptic world; he accompanies her while she observes Jiang You and Da Zhuang. 70
- Ouyang Mingri — Director who recruits her for the Unconventional Events Administration after her return home. 941 942
- Zhang Li, Wei Shuqin, and Zhang Jianjun — Her younger brother, mother, and father in her original world. They become wary of her after she returns with apocalyptic combat instincts. 941
Story Role / Major Arcs
Following Jiang You
After realizing Jiang You is fated to die in the original novel, Shuhui chooses to follow her rather than remain alone among hostile survivors. Her early objective is simple: survive by Jiang You’s side and prevent the original tragedy. 69 72
Awakening and Training
Shuhui awakens her defensive ability while attempting to help rescue Da Zhuang. Jiang You subsequently subjects her to harsh training designed to make her rely on physical ability, judgment, and courage rather than hiding behind her shield. 86 97
White Dragon Base and the Gu Siblings
During the journey to White Dragon Base, Shuhui publicly registers as a Defense ability user and carries supplies alongside the man-eating-tree bonsai. 147
When Gu Mingxi offers her a place at White Dragon Base, Shuhui rejects the offer. Believing Jiang You has been killed, she hunts down Gu Mingxi and Gu Mingyuan, kills them, and takes their heads with her. 267
Longshan Stewardship
Jiang You appoints Shuhui as Longshan’s head steward as the settlement prepares for expanding threats. Shuhui takes responsibility for meals, domestic management, A Qing’s care, and the morale of Longshan’s residents. 387 430
Defender of A Qing and Tingfeng City
Shuhui is ordered to prioritize the man-eating tree above all else during Longshan’s battles. She protects A Qing from mechanical beetles, holds the line during attacks, and eventually expands her shield until it covers half of Tingfeng City. 493 767 797
Return to Her Original World
After more than five years in the apocalyptic world, Shuhui returns to her original body and begins rebuilding her physical condition through relentless training. When Ouyang Mingri exposes her to apparent supernatural entities, she accepts employment with the Unconventional Events Administration rather than remain unprotected. 941 942
Trivia
- Shuhui once wanted to become “the most perfect bulletproof pagoda.” 94
- She considers cooking for Jiang You a major expression of loyalty and competes with Sansheng by insisting her massages and food are better. 200
- Despite her fearfulness, she is capable of becoming frighteningly aggressive when Jiang You is endangered. 266 815
- Her usual glasses are so associated with her personality that observers struggle to reconcile the frightened housekeeper with the vicious fighter she becomes without them. 904
