| First Appearance | Chapter 65, “Cold Lord Orochimaru” 65 |
Appearance
Orochimaru is introduced as a fair-skinned man wearing a Konoha Jonin vest 65.
- Pale, tall figure: His later laboratory appearance emphasizes his height and sinister, pale face 286.
- Signature smile: Frequently wears a charming or sinister smile, including while recruiting Veigar and confronting enemies 65 159 191.
- Distinctive voice: Described as magnetic during his encounter with Veigar and hoarse in command meetings 72 165.
- Intimidating presence: Examinees feel frightened simply standing near him; enemy ninja recognize his face and reputation immediately 65 191.
Personality
Orochimaru values competence and persistently pursues talented people. Veigar’s composure first attracts his attention, while the interest shown by Hiruzen and Danzō makes him curious about the boy’s hidden qualities. He continues offering Veigar a place under him despite an initial rejection 65 83 159.
His charm conceals a calculating understanding of human behavior. He provokes Tsunade’s concern for Jiraiya to persuade her to leave the front, and later correctly anticipates that Hiruzen’s attachment to him will prevent his teacher from stopping his escape 227 228 287.
Research increasingly takes priority over his public responsibilities. He welcomes a prolonged war because it supplies experimental material, values the data from Danzō’s transplant more than Danzō’s newly acquired power, and ultimately considers eternal life more important than either Konoha or the Hokage position 165 285 286.
His feelings toward Hiruzen remain complicated rather than wholly hostile. Before leaving, he deliberately preserves a record of his collaboration with Danzō, both to retaliate against his research partner and to help prevent Danzō from becoming Hokage 286.

- Uses rapid movement to leave the command area and respond to battlefield developments 164 192.
Human-Body and Forbidden-Jutsu Research
- Anatomical expertise: Although less skilled in Medical Ninjutsu than Tsunade, his research into the human body is described as surpassing hers by a considerable margin 263.
- Human experimentation: Uses living and deceased subjects for research; his laboratories contain children suspended in liquid-filled vats 226 284.
- Wood Release–Sharingan compatibility: Finds a balance between Hashirama Senju’s Wood Release and Uchiha Sharingan, enabling Danzō’s right-arm transplant 284 285.

- Soul research: Veigar takes an interest in this branch of Orochimaru’s work 285.
- Living Corpse Reincarnation: The subsequent outline names this forbidden technique as the means of his revival and return to Konoha 303.
Strategy and Command

- Delegation: Personally requests Shikaku Nara as front-line strategist, allowing himself more time for research 165.
- Ambush timing: Keeps reinforcements concealed despite his subordinates’ impatience, waiting for the appropriate moment to intervene 189.
- Withdrawal planning: Proposes retreating to Mount Kikyo and insists that abandoned positions leave nothing useful for the enemy 210 211.
- Operational reporting: Sends Hiruzen detailed accounts of battlefield decisions and explicitly records Veigar’s contributions 208 226.
Persuasion and Psychological Insight
- Recognizes the motives behind objections to Veigar’s scout-captain appointment, distinguishing Hizashi’s clan interests from Rikō Shimura’s resentment 160.
- Uses Tsunade’s concern for Jiraiya to redirect her toward the Iwagakure front 227 228.
- Exploits Hiruzen’s reluctance to harm his favored disciple when escaping Konoha 287.
Documented Limit
- Inferior to Hiruzen in direct combat: At the time of his defection, Orochimaru believes he could not escape if Hiruzen attacked with full commitment. His successful departure depends on his teacher’s hesitation 287.
Relationships
- Veigar — Recruited subordinate and valued talent. Orochimaru gives him intelligence and high-level jutsu, entrusts him with scouting duties, and later admires his political cunning. Before the defection, Veigar tells him he may return to Konoha someday 83 159 160 263 284.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Teacher and initially his strongest supporter for Fourth Hokage. Their bond breaks over Orochimaru’s human experiments, although Hiruzen cannot bring himself to stop his escape 263 285 286 287.
- Shimura Danzō — Research collaborator and political threat. Orochimaru performs Danzō’s transplant, but Danzō later exposes his experiments to remove him from the Hokage contest. After the defection, Danzō still wants to recover his research services rather than kill him 284 285 286 287.
- Tsunade — Longtime classmate and fellow disciple of Hiruzen. Orochimaru respects her medical expertise, seeks her assistance against Chiyo’s poisons, and later maneuvers her away from his experiments 166 227 228 263.
- Jiraiya — Fellow disciple of Hiruzen. Orochimaru agrees to send support to his front while keeping Sunagakure occupied, but also uses the possibility of Jiraiya’s danger to influence Tsunade 227 228 263.
- Shikaku Nara — Personally selected strategist. Orochimaru relies on his analysis and accepts his recommendation to seek Tsunade’s help against poison attacks 165 166.
- Anko Mitarashi — Subordinate recruited while Veigar trains at Mount Myōboku. Orochimaru gives her the Curse Mark of Heaven before leaving; she is subsequently found unconscious in his laboratory 285 287.
- Sasuke Uchiha — Becomes his disciple after leaving Konoha in the subsequent story outline 303.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Chunin Exams and Interest in Veigar
Orochimaru serves as chief examiner for the second stage, leading the candidates to the Forest of Death. He notices Veigar’s calm behavior and wonders why both Hiruzen and Danzō value him so highly 65.
After sensing Veigar’s uncontrolled chakra eruption, he personally investigates and offers him a position after the exams. Veigar remains wary of becoming an experimental subject. At the central tower, Orochimaru verifies the collected Heaven and Earth scrolls and confirms the successful candidates 72 73 76.
Veigar later declines another recruitment offer. Orochimaru nevertheless leaves him a scroll containing detailed intelligence on Kumogakure’s Yamashiro Clan. The information doubles as a warning: Veigar’s killing of Yamashiro Renbu has left traces that his enemies can follow 83.
Recruitment and the Mount Kikyo Front
After Veigar leaves the Anbu and defeats two of Danzō’s subordinates, Orochimaru renews his offer. Veigar accepts despite the potential conflict with Danzō, and joins Orochimaru’s vanguard three days later 159.
Orochimaru appoints him scout captain despite objections from Hizashi Hyuga and Rikō Shimura. He also supplies two requested jutsu scrolls—one containing the S-rank Flying Thunder God Technique and the other a forbidden jutsu 160 165.
Under Orochimaru’s leadership, Mount Kikyo becomes a military fortress. He convenes a war council following Sunagakure’s declaration of war and supports Shikaku’s proposal to bring Tsunade’s poison expertise to the front 165 166.
Battles Against Sunagakure
When the front requires reinforcements, Orochimaru leaves Tsunade and Shikaku in charge of Mount Kikyo and personally leads twenty Jonin and nearly 300 Genin and Chunin toward the fighting. He conceals his force until the chosen moment, then blocks the Sand Ninja’s retreat and destroys the survivors with snake summons 183 189 191 192.
As Sunagakure prepares further retaliation, he considers Veigar’s analysis of terrain and the wider war situation, marks the meeting’s contents S-rank secret, and forwards the analysis to Hiruzen. His proposal to withdraw and defend Mount Kikyo receives approval 206 208 210.
Orochimaru later participates in the eight-direction encirclement with eight giant snakes. His report on the operation highlights Veigar’s role in the annihilation of more than 3,500 Sand Ninja 216 226.
Research Behind the War Effort
Orochimaru plans a counterattack partly to obtain more experimental subjects. Orders to send 1,500 ninja to support Jiraiya force him to revise that plan, but also offer an opportunity to remove people who might discover his research 226 227.
He persuades Tsunade and Shikaku to leave for the Iwagakure front and seeks to transfer Hyuga ninja as well, fearing that their Byakugan could expose his experiments. He promises to keep Sunagakure at bay while they support Jiraiya 227 228.
Fourth Hokage Contest and Defection
Hiruzen initially favors Orochimaru over Minato as his successor, judging him intelligent and sufficiently ruthless. Meanwhile, Orochimaru recognizes that Danzō’s leverage and his own research ambitions make remaining in Konoha increasingly undesirable 263 284.
His joint research produces Danzō’s Hashirama-cell and Sharingan transplant. Soon afterward, disappearances among villagers and returning Genin point toward Orochimaru. Hiruzen asks him to investigate—a warning Orochimaru understands but does not use to save his candidacy 284 285.
When Hiruzen confronts him, Orochimaru destroys the laboratory’s experimental materials. He nevertheless leaves a record implicating Danzō in their collaboration. Hiruzen’s hesitation allows him to escape, after which he is declared an S-rank rogue ninja and his remaining followers are placed under surveillance 286 287.
