Appearance
- Fox-like facial whisker markings: Present at his first encounter with Neji at Ichiraku Ramen 6.
- Physical growth: After his extended absence, Sakura notices that he is taller than her and much sturdier than before 168.
- Unchanged hairstyle: Sasuke observes that his hairstyle has changed little during their years apart 201.
- Nine-Tails transformations: His pupils become vertical slits, his facial markings deepen, and his fingertips sharpen as the beast’s influence increases 203.
- Two-tailed form: A red chakra cloak covers his body, two tails emerge, and he begins moving on all fours 184.
Personality
Naruto is outspoken, competitive, and unwilling to surrender. During his match with Neji, he answers the suggestion that he give up by declaring his intention to become Hokage. His improved tactics coexist with overconfidence: he continues taunting Neji despite the gap in their abilities 78 80.
His impulsiveness makes him vulnerable to provocation. Kabuto exploits his sensitivity about being compared unfavorably with Sasuke, drawing him into an attack and reading his strategy. Naruto is not entirely thoughtless—he targets Kabuto’s injured hand—but advertises his intentions too clearly 118.
He can recognize when humor has crossed a line. After mistaking the transformed Sasuke for Sasuke’s younger sister, he sincerely apologizes once he understands what happened. His concern for Sasuke persists through rejection, defeat, and years of separation 66 135 199 204.
Naruto becomes more capable of restraining his anger without losing his playful nature. He calms down under Kakashi’s guidance during Gaara’s rescue and later rejects the Nine-Tails’ offer of unrestricted power. Nevertheless, his reunion with Konohamaru ends with him boasting about a newly developed erotic ninjutsu 168 179 203.
Abilities & Skills
Chakra Reserves and Physical Endurance
Naruto’s Uzumaki bloodline and jinchūriki status give him unusually large chakra reserves 78.
- Creates far more Shadow Clones than ordinary shinobi, despite the technique dividing chakra among its users 78.
- Possesses the stamina and recovery that Neji cites when subjecting him to repeated training sessions 104.
- Can still be exhausted or weakened after a Nine-Tails outbreak; suppressing his two-tailed form leaves him barely conscious and physically weak 184.
Shadow Clone Jutsu
Naruto uses physical clones for direct attacks, deception, and accelerated training 78 216.
- Mass attacks: Fills the Chūnin Exam arena with clones using Multi Shadow Clone Jutsu 78.
- Concealment and feints: Places clones between Neji and his real body, briefly misleading him about the true attacker 78.
- Training: Uses numerous clones simultaneously to practice sensing chakra and cutting through a waterfall’s flow 216.
- Limits: Large numbers do not compensate for disorganized attacks or an opponent who understands his intentions 78 118.
Nine-Tails Chakra
Before its extraction, the Nine-Tails supplies Naruto with chakra that greatly enhances his physical performance but threatens his judgment and control 80 184 276.
- Strength and speed: Its chakra allows him to move more quickly and exchange stronger blows with Neji 80.
- Emotional activation: Grief over Sasuke and Gaara triggers the beast’s power 43 179.
- Loss of control: Develops a two-tailed cloak during one outbreak and repeatedly rampages during later training 184 217.
- Improved restraint: Refuses the Nine-Tails’ demand to undo its seal during his reunion with Sasuke 203.
- External suppression: Neji’s sealing techniques can disperse the cloak; Yamato also assists in controlling outbreaks during training 184 217.
- End of jinchūriki status: Neji extracts the Nine-Tails and fills the resulting void in Naruto’s body to keep him alive 276.
Rasengan
Naruto learns the Rasengan through considerable effort and later combines it with both clones and Sage Mode 130 411 413.
- Attacks Kinshiki with a large group of clones wielding Rasengan 411.
- Uses Sage Art: Rasengan to overcome Kinshiki’s attempt to completely absorb the attack, forcing him to retreat and defend with a shield 413.
- Ordinary clone-assisted Rasengan attacks are not sufficient to overwhelm Kinshiki’s strength 411.
Wind Release
Naruto trains in Wind Release nature transformation under Kakashi, with Yamato providing the training environment and Neji demonstrating chakra-flow control 215 216.
- Learns the initial leaf-cutting exercise 215.
- Practices gathering wind chakra in his palms and using its flow against falling water 216.
- Uses Shadow Clones to conduct many attempts at once, with Neji and Yamato acting as safeguards against Nine-Tails outbreaks 216 217.
Summoning Jutsu
Naruto summons toads, although he does not always obtain the summon he wants 92 93 118.
- Initially brings out Gamakichi during the Shukaku confrontation 92.
- Successfully summons Gamabunta later in the same battle 93.
- Summons Gamariki when trying to intervene in the confrontation with Orochimaru and Kabuto 118.
Sage Mode
Naruto trains at Mount Myōboku and later demonstrates Sage Mode in both wartime defense and combat against an Ōtsutsuki opponent 265 272 413.
- Protects comrades from the destructive clash of Tailed Beast Balls 272.
- Enhances the Rasengan with sage power against Kinshiki 413.
- Continues using Sage Mode after the Nine-Tails has been removed 276 413.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kunai and shuriken — Uses them alongside clones and Nine-Tails-enhanced movement during his Chūnin Exam match with Neji 78 80.
- Wind Demon Shuriken — Throws one at the Akatsuki members during Gaara’s rescue; Sasori blocks it with his mechanical tail 179.
- Suppressive necklace — Its fall during the confrontation with Sasuke removes a force suppressing Naruto, allowing signs of the Nine-Tails’ influence to emerge 203.
Relationships
- Neji Hyuga — Upperclassman, trainer, opponent, and protector. Naruto calls him the “Great Demon King” because of his relentless training and habit of healing injuries so training can continue. Neji later helps with Wind Release practice and suppresses his rampages 78 104 216 217.
- Sasuke Uchiha / Sazuko — Teammate and rival whose protection first triggers Naruto’s Nine-Tails cloak. Naruto continues regarding Sasuke as a brother after the defection; later visits and his hopeful reaction to their return journey suggest feelings beyond their earlier rivalry, without establishing a relationship 43 199 340 419.
- Sakura — Teammate and longtime friend. His early training is partly motivated by wanting to impress her. They later share grief over failing to recover Sasuke and resolve to grow stronger together 104 168 204.
- Kakashi Hatake — Team leader and former teacher. Helps Naruto restrain his anger during Gaara’s rescue and guides his Wind Release training 168 179 215 216.
- Jiraiya — Mentor and traveling companion. Trains Naruto, accompanies him to find Tsunade, and later arranges for him to learn tailed-beast control from Killer B 78 105 266.
- Gaara — Fellow jinchūriki with whom Naruto shares an understanding of loneliness and suffering. Naruto is devastated by Gaara’s apparent death and immediately pursues Deidara to recover him 96 179 180.
- Killer B — Tailed-beast mentor. Naruto seeks his guidance to become a perfect jinchūriki; they later protect allies together during the war 266 272.
- Yamato — Acting team leader during the Sasuke reunion and a safeguard during chakra training. Maintains the waterfall environment while helping suppress the Nine-Tails 201 216 217.
- Sai — Naruto’s influence leads him to disobey his assassination orders against Sasuke. He subsequently pledges to remain with Naruto and support the team 201 204.
- Nine-Tails — Former sealed beast and source of dangerous power. It tempts Naruto to release its seal and mocks his dependence on its strength before Neji eventually extracts it 203 276.

Journey with Jiraiya and Sasuke’s Departure

Naruto learns the Rasengan before the pursuit of the defecting Sasuke. Their battle at the Valley of the End ends in Sasuke’s victory, but Sasuke spares his life and leaves Konoha 130 135.
Return and Akatsuki Operations
After roughly two and a half years away, Naruto returns to Konoha and reunites with Kakashi, Sakura, and Neji. He gives Kakashi the latest Hot Paradise volume and learns that his peers have advanced in rank while he remains a genin 167 168 169.
Gaara’s abduction sends Team Kakashi to support Sunagakure. Finding Gaara apparently dead enrages Naruto, but Kakashi helps him regain focus. Naruto pursues Deidara and later enters a two-tailed rampage that Neji suppresses 171 179 180 184.
At Orochimaru’s base, Naruto reunites with Sasuke but fails to persuade her to return. He resists the Nine-Tails’ temptation during the confrontation, then blames his own weakness when Sasuke leaves again. Sakura, Sai, and Yamato reaffirm their support 201 203 204.
Advanced Training and the Fourth Shinobi World War
Naruto works on chakra control and Wind Release with Kakashi, Yamato, and Neji. Repeated rampages interrupt the training, with Neji subduing and healing him so practice can resume 214 216 217.
After training at Mount Myōboku, he seeks Killer B’s help in mastering tailed-beast power. During the war, he uses Sage Mode to protect allies and joins the fighting against Madara and Obito. Neji subsequently removes the Nine-Tails while preventing Naruto’s death 265 266 272 274 276.
Postwar Life and the Ōtsutsuki Threat
Naruto enthusiastically welcomes Sasuke back after Neji clears her name, only to be kicked down during the reunion. He remains a genin when applying for the first joint Chūnin Exams held by the five great villages. After rejecting his application, Neji hints at alternative arrangements for him and Sasuke 291 340 341.
Naruto later fights Kinshiki alongside Sasuke and the other participating Kage, landing a Sage Art: Rasengan that the Ōtsutsuki cannot fully absorb. Neji then assigns Naruto and Sasuke to locate the unsealed Kaguya. A year later, they receive his wedding invitation and return toward Konoha, with Naruto visibly hopeful about Sasuke 411 413 418 419.
