Return to the temporary base
Still shaken, Angela Ashford sat in the passenger seat of Jill Valentine's car; Alice was with them, but this time she sat in the back storage compartment, also keeping a gun at the ready.
Ada Wong drove the car in front, while Green Arrow Duck remained in the rear, guiding the way back to the temporary base.
Given the size of Raccoon City, it shouldn't be this deserted, even late at night.
However, the occasional sight of unattended accident vehicles on the roadside, some even still burning, reveals that the threats lurking beneath the surface of this city are beginning to surface.
It hasn't reached the point of complete collapse yet. Some people are even oblivious to the urgency of the situation, thinking that life after Sun Pharma will be no different from yesterday or the day before.
Ada Wong certainly wasn't going to let the journey fall flat, not to mention her curiosity was practically radiating from her face. "You guys didn't seem bored outside just now. Can I find out what happened?"
Since others already knew, Green Arrow Duck made no attempt to hide it. He only briefly stated, "The Umbrella Corporation has created another bio-weapon that can wield a miniature machine gun and Rocket, and they're coming to hunt us down."
"Then what?"
"We blew it up until there wasn't a trace left."
"Easy to deal with?"
"Well, I don't think that thing can be dealt with by light infantry; it requires heavy firepower for saturation attacks. It's only slightly easier to deal with than a main battle tank. Does that make sense of its threat?"
"Didn't you knock it off too?" Ada Wong, who hadn't witnessed it firsthand, couldn't comprehend the threat emanating from the Duck Plushie. "Not me, it was us."
"You and Alice?"
"No, it was me and my companions. The companions you saw in the report about the sewer Reaper mutated Vampires."
"Oh, they've arrived in this city too? Can I see them?"
"Are all intelligence agents like you, eager to trick others into revealing everything?" Green Arrow Duck couldn't help but ask.
Ada Wong showed no embarrassment whatsoever; instead, she spoke with an air of self-righteousness and seductive allure, "Mr. Duck, you don't think there's no one in this world who cares about your existence, do you?"
"You exposed the New York sewers, but what about the unexposed ones? What have you been doing somewhere else in the world? This question makes many people uneasy."
Green Arrow Duck scoffed twice. "Curiosity killed the cat, woman. You don't think I only have the blood of criminals and Monster on my hands, do you?" "Then who have you killed? Tell me their names so I can assess how to treat you. Am I facing a criminal or a hero?"
Ada Wong, as if ignoring the warning, further pressured the person hiding inside the Duck Plushie.
This move caught Green Arrow Duck off guard. Speaking out would only expose more things he didn't want others to know; besides, many of these things were done under other identities, which he couldn't reveal here. Remaining silent weakened his opponent's momentum.
Faced with this situation, the Red Guardian's experience proved invaluable. Without the slightest hesitation, Green Arrow Duck gave a noncommittal answer, "You'll find out someday. Hopefully, by then, I'll live up to your expectations. Because What If...? I don't, it means many people will be in big trouble."
After speaking, Green Arrow Duck stopped answering the beautiful woman who was relentlessly probing him. This woman, much like Black Widow Natasha Romanoff, was his most difficult type to deal with. The more he said, the more mistakes he made; it was better to say nothing. Ada Wong asked a few more questions, and when she realized the other woman was truly silent, she glanced at the Duck Plushie behind her, her tone slightly coquettish. "Hmph, stingy man."
In fact, this was also a test, a way to probe her gender. Green Arrow Duck, of course, ignored her, turned off the external loudspeaker, and used the internal channel to talk to the others and confirm the current situation.
When the two Mountain Off-Road Vehicle approached the temporary U.S. military outpost where Betty Thaddeus Ross was located, they should have gone another block to reach it, but the vehicles could no longer proceed.
The U.S. military expanded its blockade, even encircling the building where the X-Jet were parked, making it impossible to approach directly. This wasn't because these troops, accustomed to acting as bullies in other countries, were looking for trouble; rather U.S. military, the number of people seeking refuge had become so large that the protected area simply couldn't accommodate them all without expanding it.
Two military trucks were blocking the intersection, leaving only a narrow passage in the middle as a temporary checkpoint. Green Arrow Duck didn't intend to force his way through; instead, he got out of the two trucks and prepared to enter on foot.
Because in this apocalyptic mood, order is the hardest thing to maintain. Any behavior that could potentially cause Riot will either be forcefully suppressed or cause the situation to spiral out of control completely.
Neither of these scenarios is something Green Arrow Duck wants to see.
He had brought a group of benevolent allies to resolve the crisis in Raccoon City. But now he'd become the crisis in Raccoon City himself. How could he possibly get anyone to listen to him now? Even if it was just a show, he had to make sure no one could find fault with it.
There weren't many people crowding the entrance, but as soon as they saw the Green Arrow Duck, an armed officer immediately ordered everyone to stop. "Stop, line up for inspection."
Several women surrounded Angela Ashford, and Green Arrow Duck and others lined up obediently.
The soldiers didn't do a background check; they just asked, "Do you have any Zombies bite wounds?" "Take off your coats, roll up the sleeves and trouser legs, and let me see."
Most people were let in after this simple check. But when it was Green Arrow Duck's turn, everyone was at a loss. A rather tough-looking, fully armed female officer looked the Duck Plushie up and down. "Have you been bitten?" "No, sir."
"Your coat... take off that mascot costume so I can check."
The three women who had already passed the test stopped and looked back, seemingly quite curious about the person inside the mascot costume.
Even disregarding the inconvenience of wearing the Duck Leopard armor—Duck Type in the wild, Green Arrow Duck would certainly not agree to such a thing, exposing his true form. "Sir, I came with the X-Men- Men, is it necessary to check so thoroughly?"
"So what if they're X-Men? They still got bitten. If it weren't for Professor X vouching for them and Lieutenant Colonel Spaar making an exception, we would never have released them. But did you get the Lieutenant Colonel's special permission?"
The news that an X-Men member had been bitten cast a shadow over Green Arrow Duck's mood, causing him to overlook the offense posed by the U.S. military sergeant in front of him.
